Nowhere near as good as XG3 and the aesthetics are way too murky and dark and edgy, and it's way too easy.

Seems unless you want to play any one of the million micro machines/mashed clones indie racing is cursed. There has been what, only 3 projects to seriously deliver? GRIP, ballisticNG (lol slipstreamGX) and Pacer? Only two of those are good.

It saddens me that racing fucking died on its feet for the PS3/360 era and has never recovered. I keep an eye on a few games on steam that look promising but as drift stage and 90's arcade racer show until they are done i'm not touching them. Plus steam's search for racing is utter shit.

Fuck sake why doesn't a perfect version of high stakes exist? The PS1 version has more dynamic tracks, better sized traffic, a slightly tighter handling scheme and (imo) slightly better art. The PC version however runs much better, can run in widescreen, has a bajillion mod cars, doesn't get texture warping and has analog acceleration (along with more responsive analog steering).

One negative for the PS1 version is no snowman.

Plus there are lot of really, really good ultrawides out there (especially as 3440x1440 is less pixels than 4k) that have 120hz and other features I look for. Only issue is it might be one of those things that when you taste it you can't go back and WSGF doesn't fill me with confidence for /vroom/ related games realistically supporting 21:9.

Retro, either 2097 or 3 depending on who you ask. I haven't played 2 too much so I can't speak for that one-
Every version of 3 has different physics, with NTSC being the one with the heaviest ships, NTSC-J being in the middle and PAL Special Edition having the floatiest ships, but it also has tracks from the first 2 games in the other versions lack.
3 is also where the series started shaping itself into "modern" Wipeout, with most teams either debuting or getting their "final" color schemes in 3, and the atmosphere getting lighter, cleaner and sleeker, a look that stuck with the series to the end, and is reflected in the OST. 1 and 2 are grittier and darker in comparison, if that's what you're into, and look a lot more 90s compared to 3.
1 is also absolutely worth playing.

2004 progression is you're a field filler car basically for the first few seasons and you grind your way up. you have to manage Chassis, Engine, pit crew, your car bodies, and develop them to be race winning equipment.

2005 is you beating ryan newman in a race and he offers you a ride in his whelen modified car, you then slowly move up the ladder to the truck, then Busch series, then to the cup series. Eventually owning your own teams across the 4 series. 2005 also introduced the hero or villain system. as well as the intimidate function which was running behind someone and instead of share drafting you intimidate and force them to make mistakes.

2006 introduced team control which lets you bounce between other cars that are part of your team but 2006 is filled with glitches and is a rushed product. 2007 is pretty much the exact same game with those issues fixed. and probably the last of the "golden EA era" of Nascar console games.

Some of the failings of carmageddon that were overlooked in 1996 or so because "omg, 3D!" really were not so well received when reincarnation launched. The game suffers from being somewhat grindy and the classic carma bullshit of the player and the last a.i standing driving in circles because you can't get enough speed to do any real damage to the a.i to finish them (and thus the stage) off. Plus NCG/wreckfest totally shat on reincarnation by showing off its soft body physics like two days after stainless showed off carma's damage model lol.

They're really snappy, it feels like the opposite of GT4, where every car aggressively understeers.
In TXRD2 instead you get really easy to lock brake and aggressive oversteer.
The good thing is that at a certain angle the car "locks" in place and it could hold it for the rest of the turn. Nice for drifting, really annoying if you're driving something grippier.

What turns me off is that I could get a Driving Force GT for 10 bucks more, but I guess it depends on what gen you prefer your vroooms to be on.
