Just sit down and play it, you donut. Have fun shooting the demons and don't feel obligated to play on Ultra Violence. After you beat that, play Doom 2.
I don't know if you can just play the Ultimate Doom straight from Steam or not, but if it needs a sourceport or some shit you should try crispy or PRboom+ for a more traditional Doom experience.

Once you're done with Doom 1 and 2, if you want you can dive into the rabbit hole that is Doom modding. You'll need GZDoom for that, make sure to turn off texture filtering.

gzdoom is what you have you have to use for most mods. it has cringe settings on by default like jumping turned on.
you have absolutely no reason to subject yourself to dosbox doom when a million different source ports are trivially easy to install

How much better is CrispyDoom compared to Chocolate Doom? I've been using Chocolate for years mainly because I don't tend to use mods or other wads all that much. I'll probably switch to Crispy if it's just Chocolate but better.

>> No.7887162

Best way to play doom is on a 468 with a Diamond VLB graphics card and SoundBlaster ISA card with a Roland SC-55MKII.

If you can't do that then the next best thing is to play unmodded Doom for a while and then switch over to Doom II before you try anything else so you get a real feel for what the games really are. Play on Ultra-violence or the difficulty under that one. And easier and the game isn't really Doom anymore. Then when you got your toes wet play with the mods.

IMO UV is perfectly fine for newcomers when it comes to Doom 1, as its absurdly easy on lower skills.
Doom 2 and Final Doom can be a bit more challenging though, so HMP or lower is fine here.

In all my years of hearing about Doom, I'm surprised I've never heard anyone make light of the fact that Doomguy can snipe with a shotgun and hit enemies at any elevation by firing straight in front of him
A shame that the game becomes basically unplayable if you die. That's the only problem I have with it so far other than the mandatory damage at the beginning of level 5 (you're forced to walk over a poison river)

I think that it's not worth buying Doom on PC, because sourceports give you widely superior options. However, if you're a console only pleb, the new official ports are actually really good, they're the most complete and authentic ports of Doom and Doom 2 to consoles ever, and they do give you a bunch of curated levelsets for free.

>> No.7889359

>>7887694
>I'm surprised I've never heard anyone make light of the fact that Doomguy can snipe with a shotgun
That's a normal tactic, Doom's shotgun has a fairly realistic range, even.

>and hit enemies at any elevation by firing straight in front of him
Not quite, Doom has no vertical mouselook, so the game compensates for this by adjusting your aim vertically to hit monsters above and below, but this auto-aim has a limited range, and only works on monsters in your direct field of view.

>> No.7889370

>>7885949
Doom 1 is seriously easy on UV, if you have any kind of experience with first person shooters you shouldn't really struggle.
Episode 4 of Doom 1 goes pretty fucking hard on UV, at least for the first few levels, so I would suggest a beginner play on HMP or maybe even lower instead.

>>7886240
The standard way is horizontal mouseturning (no vertical mouselook), with a vertical auto-aim and using the keyboard. This is how the devs played.
Doom was really built to be playable in lots of ways, you can use a flight stick or gamepad, hell, gamepad actually works pretty well with enough buttons and suitable bindings. It's also possible to play keyboard only, which was nice because people with 386 computers tended to not have enough memory to run both Doom and mouse drivers at the same time.

>> No.7889418

>>7887018
Kevin Cloud and Donna Jackson still work there, actually, and Tim Willits left a while back, so you don't give him any money anymore, which is great.

>>7887116
Crispy Doom is Chocolate Doom with a bunch of optional bonus features.

>more resolution options
>more levels to the gamma gradient
>can be set to widescreen
>can correct the color for the bloodsplatter on some enemies, so Cacos spurt blue blood fitting to their sprite, instead of red, likewise Barons bleed green
>can randomly mirror death animations/corpses (basically makes a large group of similar corpses look less samey)
>no visplane limits or other static limits, not applicable in Doom and Doom 2 really, but very much in Final Doom and custom mapsets
>can use a minimalist HUD which shows more of the screen
>can use a crosshair
>can use improved collision detection to let you walk underneath a flying enemy above you, or run down a ledge and over the head of an enemy below you (not true to vanilla, but this is one of the limitations which I don't feel bad about fixing)

You can also turn on full mouselook and jumping, but if you're looking for a Vanilla(ish) experience then you obviously won't. Has a bunch of other features.

also wrong. the fact that you go forwards and backwards when you move the mouse vertically is reason enough to spend the minimal amount of time required to install prboom+
>do you think someone who's never played Doom before is going to appreciate what PR or GZ offer
obviously they are going to appreciate playing in widescreen 1080p at a normal framerate with mouselook that isn't retarded

Doom Retro is a broken mess, I'm telling this as someone who used to be a huge fan of it. Brad keeps adding/changing unnecessary little things but not the important ones. It took years for blockmap bug fix and widescreen support (which was broken at first with terrible framerate and floors leaking everywhere). There were still some Boom-related crashes last time I played.
Just use PrBoom or DSDA if you want faithful MBF-compatible experience.

Pretty much true, but it'll vary.

>E1, E2, E3
Not hard at all, there's like, maybe one or two rude ambushes which can get you, but it's not like you can't load a save, or like the levels can't be beaten pistol start if you fucked up. If you have any kind of experience with first person shooters, you'll be able to do this just fine on UV.

>E4
Added for the retail re-release. First three levels twists your pair and pulls, but lets up quite a lot afterwards. I would not suggest a first timer to play this one on UV.

>Doom 2
Harder than the original, but not significantly. There's new monsters and more complex levels. If you could do the original three episodes UV, you shouldn't have much trouble with Doom 2 on UV.

>TNT
Harder than Doom 2, but not massively so, uses zombies a lot, so you'll git gud at handling them.

>Plutonia
A lot harder than Doom 2, the design philosophy was that they'd make the levels harder if they felt the levels were too easy for them to beat. If you're not up for its tricks and traps, consider playing it on HMP first, then giving it a run on UV.

>Sigil
Mildly merciless on UV. Imagine if E4 continued to be balls hard for its entirety.
