It has about the same featureset as Quakespasm, but can give you much better performance on fuckhuge maps + has a neat underwater effect. Man, this scripting shit is confusing. It probably wouldn't be if the documentation on how to actually setup or organize any of this shit was straight forward.

There's ACS and ZScript and then there's DECORATE which is apparently deprecated.
All I want to do is add some additional decorations to my map in the old Hexen format.
And the way I'm supposed to do this instead of creating a script in the map editor is instead to use slade and inject a DECORATE text file inside my wad with the new definitions and graphics so I can use it in the editor, right?

I use vkQuake 99% of the time, it's mostly fine. MarkV is a decent direct upgrade over WinQuake for playing vanilla levels.
people keep saying Spiked is the most compatible, but each time I try it I have more issues than with any other port. either special fx visibly snap into positions, or vanilla levels don't load, or in the latest version particles don't spawn properly half the time in AD maps. it also won't tell you that a command is unrecognized so you're left wondering if it did anything.

Yeah. I'm a little pissed/disappointed because my original idea of launching enemies as projectiles with the new staff upgrade for Kustam was a complete bust. So instead I'm gonna make it so the attack causes a more violent explosion if you hit an enemy that has a higher max HP, so where imps and archers have nothing to them, hitting a Pavise Guard will cause a big explosion because they're fatasses.

ACS is scripting for maps. You *can* also use it for monsters/weapons/etc., but it's a rather roundabout way and I don't doing that.
Decorate is the "old" way of adding new monsters, it's deprecated because there's no new features added, but in 2021 and GZD 4.6.0 you can still perfectly fine add and use Decorate stuff.
ZScript is the successor to Decorate. It's extremely powerful and lets you cut down code lines IMMENSELY (seriously, I migrated some of my old stuff from Decorate to Zscript and in one instance I got down from like 150 lines to 50), while also letting you do stuff you couldn't do with Decorate or ACS and offers a better functionality than both of those combined. Forget having to use a million dummy inventories.
That said, the ZScript documentation is absolutely abysmal and getting into it as a non-programmer makes you want to kill babies. There is a pretty good introduction by Jekyll Grim. Beyond that you need to skim the gzdoom.pk3 and the forums and probably still won't find what you want anyway.

So do you add ZScript like you would Decorate? Put it inside your wad and place it somewhere in the directory? Instead of a DECORATE file, it's ZSCRIPT?
And what about multiple instances of this stuff? Is everything just crammed into a single script file or can it be organized and referenced in some way that won't be confusing?

Blood is an extremely fun and enjoyable game with lots of charm and soul, tough and dark, yet slightly tongue in cheek.

Blood 2 is not fun or enjoyable, it lacks all of the charm and soul of Blood, and it's tough, but not for good reasons. The weapons are extremely wonky due to the random damage scaling (which has a very wide range), making every single weapon feel very unreliable and undependable, combine this with shitty annoying AI, shit like explosions going through walls and obstacles unobstructed, soul crushingly bland and numbing level design, and hosts of awful bugs. If Blood was challenging in the way of a parent showing tough, yet caring love, then Blood 2 is challenging in the way that its mother boozed heavily while carrying it.

What I'm saying is that Blood 2, as a game, has a very smooth philtrum.

I could have just keep it at 'Why...' or even 'FUCKING WHY?' but that doesnt really convey anything, so I might as well elaborate why I think this type of content has even less than none place in Quake
For the most part thats because it simply screws with the fundamental designs of the FPS genre as a whole and with no real gameplay it just ends up as a unbearably cringey (to non leftards at least, and Im saying this a fucking weirdo who casualy faps to 2d teenage faggots) and boring timewaster trying too hard to prove a point nobody really cares about when playing a FPS game like Quake (ok then mapper, some minions of Shubb-Niggurath are actually homosex, and so what???) whatsoever unless they're high or drunk - even the GZdoom "remake" of Gone Home had something going for it as that was actually a parody of both 'walking simulators' and 'gayness as an acceptable backstory / character development' (made obvious at the end), but doing this type of stuff 'for serious guize' doesnt simply work for the majority of people - outside of the 'muh 42 genders' vocal crowd that IRL is quite scant outside of the interwebz...

I only ever made 1 map in QuARK about a decade ago for Q2- it was pretty much a ripoff of "Danger Room" but with actual textures applied to it, but it always ended up being pitch black unless the roof wasnt removed...
Trenchbroom being highly retard-proof makes me want to try it again, but right now I dont have really much off-work time to spare unless stuff required to do this 'just works' out of the box to even think about bothering with it - if its possible to just take an old map or parts of one from around 1997~9 - like the ones from Aftershock or Q!zone, and try to 'de-shittify' them in any easy way with modern mapping tools?

Be smart: After the bars block that hallway, rather than walking forward into that nightmare, turn around and break two of the bars down so you can leave, then you can safely open the door and have some cover between you and the hoarde of monsters, maybe deploy a HERP.

Bridgeburner's slaughter is anything, but tedious. Grindy slaughter was more of a 00s thing, while at 10s Speed Of Doom created new era of more fun slaughter with well thought monster placement and fast gameplay. Of course Skillsaw (on few maps), Ribbiks and more recently Dragonfly developed this style further. Brudgeburner continued from there. If you want modern tedious aka grindy slaughter, Abandon is for that. After all it's huge Sunder worship, and Sunder's point is to make you battle huge hordes with limited and weak arsenal.

Was a thing in Duke and Shadow Warrior too. Which is imho alright, you can reload at will and it brings about some degree of tactics to the firefights without being overbearing.

>Crossbow
Pretty much never you are going to need a zoom function and the crossbow's more useful mechanic is the scattershot.
>Bowling bombs
Again, they are fine and can be used for checking around corners without wasting ammo if you don't hit anything.
I think what I was mainly disappointed about was not having mines, I though the clusterpuck was going to be a landmine but guess not.

Is the second level of Blood supposed to be incredibly difficult from a Pitchfork start?
It puts you on a straight street against far away Cultitsts before you reach the station and you don't even have a Flare Gun to snipe them, only a Shotgun and few shells (if you're lucky with enemy drops you get a few more). No health essentially as well, unless you get Life Essence drops. And when you reach the train station lobby it's basically down to luck whether the Fanatic on the ledge will deal you a shitton of damage as you peek to dynamite him and the Cultist beside him or not. It feels much harder than the other levels in the episode (perhaps the game?) from a Pitchfork start. But my autist compels me to beat it without carrying a previous level's arsenal over.

That's not a good comparison at all. That's literally the worst optimized wad ever made. Tormentor always demonstrated that he has no idea of how the engine works, ever tried to open his maps in Doom Builder?

For example, VietDoom has much more intricate outdoor areas, literally every tree and piece of plant/grass is destroyable, and features literal destroyable buildings powered by Marky's spaghetti, and I can play it always above 100fps, while every level in BoA often drops bellow 30fps.

Given that Selaco takes place entirely in confined areas, I think it's going to perform fine.

Long shot, but, I figured if anyone else has had this issue it's probably another anon here. I've been having issues with Half-Life 2's loading times when I go into a new map. It takes regularly a minute to two minutes for the game to move forward and just kills the flow. This doesn't happen woth saves, only map transitions. I recall load times being long back in 2010 when I last played, but, never this long. I've tried all the normal fixes I've found online for it, such as disabling auto-saves, setting a FPS cap, and anything else mentioned here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/220/discussions/0/846958223077274345/, however, nothing has really helped. Would any of you have any other suggestions for me to try? Not a troll: what is with all the praise for Plutonia and simultaneous razing of TNT? And why does the praise of Plutonia feel completely disconnected from my experience of playing the two games?
>smaller maps = good
I don't understand the logic of this argument, but beyond that the premise seems disingenuous to me. Even if they are smaller in terms of area, Plutonia's levels take a while to get through due to the methodical nature of progression. I don't remember the game chugging along any faster than TNT, and I really struggled to force myself to continue playing past level 12.
>it has the best PWAD level design
What are people referring to when they say this? Odyssey of Noises, or what? The levels in Plutonia are decently laid out, but the only ones that are really memorable have gimmicks like the invisible bridges or Hunted. Is the level design really that much better than base Doom 2?
Seriously, what is it? Is the game tons more fun on HMP or something? I don't want to accuse anyone of parroting others' opinions here, but it really seems like many who gush so hard about Plutonia were playing a different game than I was. Nostalgia is not a factor as I played both within the last couple years.

Could be that. I also like how you specifically mentioned Romero instead of just "idea guy" because there're many of those... Like, probably literally everyone is an "idea guy" to a certain extent. It's one thing to have an idea, but coming up with a good one is a different story. That's how I feel about myself, at least.

I'll give you a list of the ones that I think still need work, as of the latest submissions:
Mancubus (fine design, but needs better realized detail, especially the cannons)
Lost Soul (old sprite and too similar to its doom equivalent)
Pain Elemental (lol ball of lost souls)
Spider Mastermind (ugly obvious model rip)
Wolf SS (mierda)
Vile (needs a shading touch-up and rotations on its attack and res frames)

Another fault of Freedoom is that it doesn't do public releases frequently enough, so updates to old assets get missed out on by the public for long stretches at a time. New high-quality Revenant, Baron, and Chaingunner sprites are in various stages of github limbo, for instance.

Plutonia is still one of the greatest wads IMO. Nostalgia doesn't cloud my eyes, as I only got around to playing Final DOOM a couple years ago, and PWADs only a year ago. I'll admit, when I first opened Plutonia, I didn't see how it was even playable (I was still using keyboard controls) so I opened TNT and enjoyed having more DOOM levels but ultimately got burned out by MAP20. Then I booted up old Plutonia and it clicked.
I don't know what you're not seeing about Plutonia's level design and combat encounters, it's all top-notch. Nobody's saying "small maps = good design" but that as challenging as Plutonia is, it's never completely overwhelming because even the bullshit traps are only going to set you back a couple of minutes. And there are some absolutely bullshit surprises in Plutonia but those moments need to be understood as being a product of its time, when "difficult" gaming resorted to cheap arcade "Haha you weren't prepared for this now you're dead" style traps. Other than that, there's really nothing to hate on it for. The truth is, you see Plutonia in every modern PWAD. Plutonia taught us how to use properly place monsters where they're best suited to their strengths, rather than DOOM II where the monsters are mostly just sort of... placed. Though it also taught us how NOT to use chaingunners lol.
