Holy hell, Montezuma's Revenge for Atari 8-bit computers shits all over Jet Set Willy. It's actually fun to play today! Why isn't it considered a proper classic nowadays?

>> No.7877293

Who says it's not? It also got a PC "sequel" in the late 90s programmed by the original guy.

well given the name I'm not surprised it does that

the theme of the game is the theme of The Gong Show
how is that even legal? guess back then nobody cared about video games but really just stealing a popular theme
when you collect a key it plays La Cucaraca but at least that's public domain and stealing from Mexicans is okay

>> No.7877343

>>7877339
The released version didn't play the song, either for space constraints or copyright reasons or both.

>> No.7877356

Parker Bros. wanted to release the game as a cartridge to be more child-friendly so they trimmed it down to 16k which meant cutting out a large amount of content. In the end they put it out on disk anyway to reduce costs after PB lost a shitton of money in the video game crash. As a further money saving measure, they also distributed the game as a flip disk with the A8 and C64 versions bundled together, and the Apple II and IBM versions bundled as well.

The Spectrum port was renamed Panama Joe presumably because they didn't like a game named after shit.

>Why isn't it considered a proper classic nowadays?
It didn't have an NES port, plain and simple. If it did it would have seen a lot more love.

>> No.7877430

>>7877416
it had a Master System port

>> No.7877438

>>7877430
Master System only ever had real adoption in South America, and a fledgling place in Japan and parts of Europe. It was dead in the water compared to the NES in North America. Sega never really had a solid foothold in consoles in general till the Genesis/Mega Drive.
Its a decent port though, if you like the game definitely check it out.

This, H.E.R.O., Warlords, and Pitfall 2 are some of the most impressive 2600 games.
Its weird to think that Parker Brothers actually had some solid devs in the 80s.

Jumpman is only alright compared to the best of the Jumpman clones, (Ultimate) Wizard.
Its basically Jumpman but with spells, many more mobs, traps, etc.
Unfortunately it was never ported off of the Commodore 64. IMO its the best single screen platformer the C64 has to offer, and its a crime that its practically a forgotten game anymore.

Since the video game history got rewritten in early 2000s by Americans in their 30s who grew up with NES and later consoles. Everything before 1986 is since considered prehistory by general audiences.

>Since the video game history got rewritten in early 2000s by Americans
Rewriten? Please. The actual problem was that Americans were the only ones cataloging history in any significant way, and it took Europe about a decade to catch up, and Japan I'd say only in about the last 5 or so years has actually started to do anything themselves.
The problem was other's inaction.

You compelely ignored the age factor I mentioned. Mainstream "game historians" are not into Atari VCS. They are absolutely not interested in home computers. They don't care about all those less successful first or second gen consoles. It's either Nintendo Entertainment System (not Family Computer!) or fuck off.

I've played the IBM version (on an actual IBM XT with a CGA card no less) and it falls short in smoothness of animation and good controls, it's extremely stiff. Also it seems to play too fast and graphics flicker like hell. The sound is pretty meh too.

The Colecovision in general is a really fast machine, its CPU is 3.5Mhz and a full 3.5Mhz since the port-mapped VDU RAM doesn't steal any CPU time. It's faster than the NES.
