What are some good /vr/ tank games lads? I enjoyed both Panzer Fronts and Battle City but it seems like a pretty small subgenre outside of those 2-3 games. Is it just too niche?

Play this game if you want to play as a tank that is your character in an RPG with a big world to explore.
Even all the NPCs are tanks.
You battle other tanks, win new tanks with different stats and can buy different parts in towns and customize every aspect of your tank.
It's very fun.

you can finish this real quick if you know which parts to equip per mission

What are some general strategies so that you and your squad aren't easily killed?

Try Ausf. B, it's more milsim than arcade action and focused solely on the North African campaign plus an extra Fall Gelb mission. You can pick sides and edit missions to ride almost every weapon including field guns.

Don't know if retro enough, but I've enjoyed tanking in Operation Flashpoint.

There was a tank game for ps1 or ps2 that I can't remember the name of. There were heaps of tanks available like HEAPS and the menus were blue. it was 3rd person perspective and you could destroy the buildings that people used for cover but the destruction was minimum. There was also a map where it was inside a giant plane hanger looking area but it had buildings inside. I also remember that the best tank was a small yellow one that was towards the bottom of the list.
I am sorry I can't remember more but if it sounds like anything you'd know please respond

I wanted to try Ausf. B, but it suffers from some slowdown when running via OPL I can't find a fix for.

Battle Tanx is a fun ass game, shame you can't emulate the original.
There's a children's 1on1 vs game called Pop'n Tanks on ps1, surprisingly solid.

there's another game like this on ps1 but it's Japan only

Unironically BF1942, imo it's a good mix between arcadey and simulation (admittedly, it's leaning heavier towards arcade) and it's just fun to drive, especially online when you know that guy that just went flying up in the air was a real person

Battle Tanx and Battle Tanx Global Assault are great games for the N64. I sunk many hours into these with my friends. I am afraid to go back and play them because the fps might be super low and janky and cause a headache like most N64 games do to me.

came in here to say this, opflash is a brilliant game about more than just tanks, but the tank play on its own is very good if you have the autism power to learn it

looks like you're gonna need a physical copy of Ausf. B and a PAL PS2, played so much I discovered a serious bug with one of the mobile Flak guns: switch to scope view while moving and the game fucking freezes

I'll mention Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 just because Tanks are the most important units.
Be warned if you give it a try that the AI is relentless even on easy and it's basically a puzzle game disguised as an RTS because of this.
Make sure you get the gog version because steam doesn't work right.
