Why are they called Metroidvanias when they have more in common with Metroid than Castlevania, why not just call them Metroid clones?

Because the first game to really capitalize on the Metroid formula and expand upon it (that wasn't a Metroid game itself) was a Castlevania game. Other metroidvanias aren't necessarily doing the Metroid thing—they are doing the Castlevania doing the Metroid thing.

The idea of them being clones is ridiculous. There's like 5 or 6 different possible structures for progression in games, and Metroid just happened to be one of the earliest video games to use its particular structure. I love Metroid, but comparison between it and every other game with a similar progression needs to stop.

Because Castlevania was one of the earliest franchises to capitalize on the "free-roaming" platformer formula.
Before SOTN, and even before Castlevania 2, the MSX version of Castlevania 1, known as Vampire Killer, contained these elements.
The term itself is used to describe exploration driven platformers with some degree of narrative.
Some Metroidvanias include RPG elements, but the core progression is exactly the same as in a traditional Metroidvania.

Some early NES games that can be qualified as such:
Battle of Olympus
Zelda 2 (Minus the Map)
Wai Wai World by Konami
Jikuu Yuuden - Debias
Majou Densetsu II
Cosmo Police Galivan
The Goonies II
Dr. Chaos - Jigoku no Tobira

SNES Games:
Magical Pop'n
Phantom 2040
Demon's crest

Lesser known examples:
Zillion on the Master System
TMNT 3 on the Gameboy
Hunter x Hunter on the Gameboy Color

Castlevania was more arcade-y but once they went Metroidvania they truly went full autist on this formula.

This is like the Ys games that used to be solo Adol now it is Adol and his gang, not the same format we all loved. Fun for 2 games but now that everyone of them that comes out is the same it gets old real fast.

Magical PopN isnt even a metroidvania, even the quasimedtroidvania games like PoR, Monstwer World and Shantae have some backtracking a bit more exploration, Magical Pop'n is just a regular sidescroller with some minor nor linear level design, but still staged based.

Sorry but i am quite still aggravated how much the term metroidvania had been missused.

PIC RELATED: how many of these are NOT actual metroidvanias (in4 NOT RETRO REEEE)

So I've been playing La Mulana. How far can I reasonably expect to get without a guide? Managed to kill one boss so far and I've made decent progress in a few areas. I've got two of those red gems you need to summon a boss. I feel like all I need to do is find whatever will let me interact with all the orb indentations I've seen all over the ruins and I'll have mostly cracked the game.

La-Mulana is quite evil and has many "how the fuck did you expect me to know to do this?!" moments, but I absolutely loved the ever loving shit out of it
Probably one of the most open one of the genre, you can truly always do a shitload of stuff, you just haven't found out how yet
My personal recommendations is to go around attempting to find stuff to advance, but when you start getting bored with no progressions, just look at a guide for a specific puzzle that's been bothering you

Castlevania was the original Metroidvania. It was called that because of the similarities with Super Metroid. But there have always been 2D sidescoller adventure games.

For me, I've wiped out Super Metroid (who hasn't?), MW4, Bloodstained, Metroid Fusion, SOTN and Muramasa. If you haven't played a monster world game, I highly recommend emulating MB III: A Dragons Trap on the SMS. In my opinion, it is the best 8-bit game to ever grace the earth. The remake doesn't do it any justice for it, with the graphics look like a shitty flash game on Newgrounds.
