No.

It was rebalanced to take away some grind, which is a noble cause, but 1) DQV wasn't that grindy, and 2) instead of improving the pacing, they ruined it.

The game ends in under 20 hours, no boss or dugeon feels important. AND the music sounds like shit even in headphones.

Seriously!? Dragon Quest 7 better than FF7?
When DQ7 had piss-poor graphics even for PSX, lackluster characters (probably the worst characters in the entire DQ main series) an extremely shallow plot, and the most unappealing musical score out of almost any DQ game?

Where as FF7 had cutting edge graphics, some of the most iconic characters in video game history, put JRPGs on the map in the western world, an unforgettable score, unique gameplay systems (Materia, Limit Breaks) and tons of mini-games?

I'm not trying to overrate FF7, it's not even the best FF game, but saying DQ7 is better is just wrong. DQ4, DQ5, or DQ8 of course. But not 7.

As programmers and designers gain experience they come to realize how best to take advantage of hardware. Just compare Super Mario Bros 1 to Super Mario Bros 3 or any late NES game. It still doesn't mean than SMB had good graphics for when it came out.

So before the FF7 graphics talk derails the thread, lets all agree on this.

In 1997 the Graphics for FF7 looked great. The sprites were deformed and jagged to save processing space, but everything else about the game looked great at the time. It didn't take very long for these graphics to get overshadowed because the technology was improving rapidly at the time.

There's nothing wrong with saying FF7 has ugly visuals now, because they don't look very good at the time. Anyone who says the visuals are great are obviously talking about The time it was released

First of all, comparing the graphical styles of FF7 and DQ7 is an exercise in futility. They're completely different styles.

That said, aside from a few 3D models and the in-game cutscenes, you have to admit that DQ7 could have been an SNES game.

More important to a JRPG is the gameplay and story. DQ7 is a looooong drawn out slog, most of which consists of grinding, with a few obtuse puzzles that wouldn't be out of place in DQ1 thrown in for good measure. The story takes forever to go anywhere, the characters are bland, and character progression is slow, with or without the class system (that doesn't show up until about 30 hours of playtime).

Maybe you're into that sort of thing. Maybe you've played through all of the older DQ game. Maybe you grew up with Ultima and Wizardry. I could see why you'd view DQ7 as one of the best RPGs ever made.

It doesn't change the fact that FF7 is far more accessible, featured visuals which were amazing for the time (in terms of art direction if not purely in technical terms), and throws a new twist at you pretty much every time you reach a new town, all with minimal grinding.

I'm not talking about tehcnical aspects, but artistic ones. Do you think FFVII field models on FFVII backgrounds look better, worse or equal to FFVI's spritework?

Or do you think both looked like shit? Or what? I'm such an opinionated moron that I've kept trying to talk objectively for dozens of posts now.

Why do people always say that Tifa knew the truth about Cloud's memories but didn't tell him? It's pretty clear that she wasn't sure if her memories were true since the first thing she asked after Cloud flashback story was how fucked up she was after getting stabbed by the Sephiroth.

I still remember my mom watching me play FFVII after years of NES and SNES.

"why did they make the picture so much worse on this one?" she asked me. compared to what she had seen on Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid and other games, early polygon games looked like ass. she was right but the game was fun so I played it anyway

and she hates video games, so there's no bias there

The field models are the only thing that don't look fine. The prerendered backgrounds are usually great, and the battle scenes are nice for their time, but you can't defend Cloud's basket-balls-connected-by-soda-straws arms.

FF7 battle looks better.

I can accept the super deformed characters being just field icons representing the characters fir simplicity when everything looks squat, and in that basic, squashed style.

But when you go to the "realisticly" proportioned enemies in battles, then see the same squat heroes next to them, it looks really bad and I've always hated it.
