LMAO, where have you been? A semi-finished build was leaked as early as 2002, and the SNES classic version was dumped almost immediately.
Other builds were also discovered with the 2020 Gigaleak including the The Winter CES one.

>> No.7870008

No, the game has a chip inside that checks the serial number of the SNES.
It was made specifically to prevent the ROM leaking, you can't play it even on the real SNES, which is kind of scummy and a reason that not many people are talking about the game.
I think there was a project to ROM hack it, but it got shut down by Nintendo pretty fast.
Basically, all you can do is buy SNES mini to play this game.
Every gameplaye video of the game is from SNES mini, even the ones that predate SNES mini.

Actually, yes.
In the first game's ground Venom stages, your allies have a tendency to shoot the blue falling towers and have them collapse in your direction. This can obviously be avoided by letting the enemies kill the allies, as unlike in 64 your shots can't damage your wingmen.

Star Fox 2 was finished but canceled on the SNES (in hindsight, for no good reason). Various in-development builds got leaked but the final game was eventually officially released on the SNES Classic/Mini and then Nintendo Switch Online. It has a lot of elements that internally inspired later games.

Absolutely. I never got the appeal of overclocking Star Fox, it messes with the timing pretty badly. I wish Nintendo would just put the game in a modern engine though, there was a tease of what that might feel like in the WarioWare for Wii. Just remaster 1&2 as eShop titles, they had the capability since at least 3DS.

>> No.7874630

>>7873817
No, overclocking the SuperFX just smooths the framerate, it's not playing the game on fast forward. The game's timing is coming from the SNES's processor and not the SuperFX. The fact that it uses this chip is the only reason it works for these games to do this. Strictly makes the game playably smooth except in points where the slowdown is causing literal timing lag for the console, in which case the game may become very very slightly faster.

This probably would have been mentioned in the manual had the game been released back in the day. The digital manual for the SNES Mini version neglects to mention, and I swear it has the Star Wolf profiles out of order. It might've been mentioned in a preliminary story in some magazine though.
Speaking of magazines, I could've sworn one of them gave the Arwings designations that imply last names for Miyu and Fay. TCRF's pre-release page shows that late 1994/early 1995 build gives "PH-001" for Peppy Hare's ship, "FM-001" for Fox McCloud's ship, and "MW-001" for Miyu's ship, suggesting her last name began with W (it's not "Lynx" like some fansites claim). I recall a magazine also used these Arwing designations plus one for Fay.

So like, you know how Krystal (and to a lesser extent, Fara, though she was never an official Star Fox member) and Amanda were love interests for Fox and Slippy, respectively? This also implies that Fay evolved into Bill...

Found it. It's a third-party source, but I presume they referenced Nintendo materials since it sort of lines up. Thing is, it looks like there's a typo with Falco, Peppy and Slippy's Arwing designations. I'm gonna assume that Fay is correct since Fox and Miyu are a match and the writer probably just confused Falco with Fay. If true, this means that Fay's last name started with O. My theory if that Miyu and Fay's last names were like McCloud and Lombardi and not their species like Toad and Hare. Maybe you can twist Miyu W. into Miyu Wyld, as in Meow Wildcat, or something similar (given Peppy and Slippy resemble a rabbit and frog more than a hare and toad)? And maybe, possibly, Fay O. was Fay O'Donnell or even Fay Oikonny, before it was repurposed for Star Wolf?
>>7872634
I got one for you - is "Astropolis" an official name or a fan one (I'd consider the Aeon Genesis proto fan-translation the latter)? I played the retail version of Star Fox 2 multiple times and don't recall the name of Andross' space base ever showing up, so I don't know where the wikis are sourcing this information.

If we're judging purely by the SNES timeline (AKA no Krystal or Amanda), love interests weren't really a thing outside of Fara for Fox. Even then, she was exclusive to the Nintendo Power comics and she was seemingly replaced by Fay, seeing as how they have strikingly similar backstories. Perhaps if the game released back in '96 the canines would have fucked, but that's just speculation.

>>7896294
In the CES prototype of SF2, Miyu's Arwing is codenamed "MW-001" and Fay's is codenamed "FO-001". This hints that their last names originally started with a W and an O respectively. With that being said, Dylan Cuthburt remembers calling them "Miyu Swift" and "Fay Sinclair" during development.

I can believe O'Donnell (they're both canines even). Oikonny is a corrupted wordplay on "oink", and while you may think this may be more appropriate for Pigma over Dengar, there's actually a purpose to this that makes it too deliberate to Andrew. You see, it's a reference to the Andross' heritage in the Nintendo Power comic, where he was raised by (I shit you not) android pigs, and had an android pig assistant of his own named Herbert. Yep.

Here's what's up: in the official translation, the team isn't really called "Star Wolf" in the game, but rather "the Star Wolf wing". When "Cap'n Wolf" refers to himself as "Star Wolf", it's within the context of the team being HIS wing. In the Japanese version, he literally calls himself "this Wolf" in that line, which is a bit stilted in English so it's understandable that they'd change it to something that suitably sounds arrogant. I have no explanation as to why he's called Star Wolf in Smash Bros. dialog though.

A shame that Nintendo never released it when the SNES was still alive and kicking though, I know it would never sell enough to recoup the manufacturing costs but it would have been a great choice to use as a SNES Jr. pack-in title instead of Yoshi's Island.

As straightforward emulations. What I'd personally like to see is from-the-ground-up recodes that incorporate things like 1080p 60fps, analog control, etc. all while maintaining the SFX chip look and artstyle. I also mentioned before that the reason why I think the SF1 3DS remake was rejected was because there were legal issues with any and all games that used the SFX chip. It's the reason why the GBA version of Yoshi's Island was on the 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console instead of the SNES original.

So the teammates being alive doesn't add to your score directly? Don't they barely help at all? I've nearly gotten a perfect score in starfox 1 (only missed perfect on two stages I think) and it seemed like they really didn't do anything.

I guess they might spawn an extra enemy when they chase or are chased, so that's something....

What do you make of "Lady" and "Saru" in the early Star Fox 2 prototypes?

"Saru" is Japanese for Monkey and "Lady" is self explanatory. A lot of people seem to think that they're Fara (from the Nintendo Power SF comics) and Andross. While Fara makes sense, I don't know why Andross would be in an Arwing. In my opinion Argonaut made the right call with swapping them out with original characters. It helps expand the universe a bit.

Now that Star Fox 2 was officially released, so you expect to see Miyu and Fay make an appearance in the next game?

Algy's basically just another form of Andrew. For whatever reason, Andrew was the original idea and it became Algy at some point. Star Fox 64 looked to the concept art when making their version of Star Wolf. For that reason, I doubt they'd ever have Algy and Andrew coexist as separate characters.

Possibly. I'm not sure if they'd be on the SF team, but I could see them showing up as a temporary partner during some missions similar to Katt. I'm personally fine with them being main crew, but lots of people only want the original four to be on the team...

Algy however has been basically replaced by Andrew. >>7913173 says it best.

Why is Venom so different in Star Fox 2? Did they accidentally switch it with Eladard or something?
