It's really annoying that this is now what she wears. I get that Nintendo wanted to make Zero Mission more family friendly instead of having Samus sneak around in her underwear but the Zero Suit completely fucks up the fact that she's supposed to be vulnerable outside her power suit. Now that she wears the Zero Suit pretty much constantly and even fights in it when she takes off the armor she's left wearing...slightly less good armor.

Here's what's up: under normal conditions, Samus can materialize parts of her Power Suit at will instead of the whole suit at once. In the manga, we even see her activate her Arm Cannon by itself. In Zero Mission, the Power Suit is rendered entirely unusable at one point, so she can't use the Arm Cannon. She even trains with the Power Suit off. So both are correct.

That actually makes her boring. Roger Ebert made a point once that the reason Indiana Jones was a more compelling hero than Lara Croft was because he would panic when he was in danger. Samus out of her suit is better if she's like John McClane. In over her head and way under equipped. The games go to great lengths to make her feel in over her head even with the power armor. I hate how 90% of pornographic art portrays Samus either as a dumb submissive bitch or being brutally raped by aliens. You would imagine that a woman in her peak physical form who regularly goes on killing sprees against local fauna while performing acrobatic tricks in a metal suit would have more art showing her being a top and actually enjoying intercourse. Glad more and more people are starting to realize this.

Also Super Metroid Guides in various regions are vastly different from each other and this strategy guide was written by an ex-Rare developer, and this page doesn't seemingly exist in the Japanese guide to my knowledge (the one that actually had the developer commentaries, so it holds far more weight compared to other strategy guides)

Basically this is straight up just localization bullshit that was never really canon and someone not understanding the context in which it was originally used, and applied it incorrectly without knowledge. This is why you never source Strategy Guides for lore.

She can, but there's nothing interesting about a generic hot blonde (sometimes green-haired...) lady. Samus as a character works because she's a basic self-insert. I always found it a bit weird yet strangely hot that Samus was literally walking around in such skimpy outfits just under the suit in earlier games. Of course, the real reason for this was to make it easier to tell within 8-bit limitations that she's supposed to be a woman under the suit. It's why later games largely retired it with the Zero Suit, although I always found the game over sequence in those games rather odd. In Super and Fusion, when Samus's suit explodes, I believe she's dead meat when she's left exposed in such a vulnerable state, whereas in Zero Mission and Samus Returns remakes she's seen in her Zero Suit which is supposed to be her last resort and so she should still have some fight in her.

To clarify, green was never Samus' natural color. The green hair was just part of Samus' palette after collecting the Varia Suit, which is already collected via the popular "JUSTIN BAILEY" password. Samus was just brunette without that powerup and in the ending. Makes it curious if the Gravity Suit would change her hair too..
>>7874426
Apparently early builds of Super Metroid had Samus naked and letting out a suggestive moan, and Sakamoto claims to still have this version of the master ROM (no, it did not get gigaleaked). It obviously changed in the final version, but if you look at her death animation VERY carefully frame-by-frame, it also looks like her normal clothes are bursting along with her Power Suit, but the sprite now fades to white to cover her up and obfuscate it. So it looks like the bare minimum was edited to get it past the censors.
>Zero Suit is supposed to be her last resort and so she should still have some fight in her.
That's a good point. It'd a fun mechanic in Metroid: Dread if you're out if the suit at 1HP and not powerups and have to retreat to get more health or go to a save station to restore your suit.

Mhmm, It was Minako Hamano, one of the co-composers of the game (pic related) who recorded it. I once ripped all the sound effects from Super Metroid hoping that I could find the moan, and while it wasn't suggestive, I did find a half-second clip of a woman going "oh!". Maybe it's on autism on my part, but I feel like things like this should only be added by people who have the know-how to explain what it is, or at least make an educated guess. I can do neither, because all I did was use SNESSOR to rip the sound files, which anyone can do. Unlike BMF54123 and other lead editors on the site, I wouldn't know how to dig into the game's code and look for unused pointers that could explain what the sound effect is for (if it's even a SM sound effect at all and not a leftover from something that was overwritten on the master ROM). I just want someone who actually knows what they're doing to document this stuff.

Anyway, I was going end this post with a link to the 'oh' sound effect (it was actually two that I found, the other was a man grunting), but while looking for it I may have found even more weird voice samples. I'm going through all 109 SFX one by one when I'm done I'll post my findings here, if anyone is interested.

Of course it did, the very beginning of the game "The last Metroid is in captivity..." etc. But that one is the only real voice sample I recall.

In that case... after studying the image for a bit, I think maybe it's the look on Samus' face and the impression it gives in conjunction with the way she is posed. Left arm leaning on the counter; an empty glass of what was probably some adult beverage in her right hand; barefoot, with one leg casually crossed over another. Whether this a public bar or her own private gunship bar, she gives off a worldly, lusty vibe, like she's thinking of how and *who* she's going to spend the rest of the night with.

I think you're in the ballpark. Her outfit is pretty standard athletic gear. In the original image she looks like she's just chilling at a bar. But take her boots off and it suddenly becomes more intimate. It indicates a higher comfort level. Being barefoot means you're not thinking about running or fighting and are probably ready to go to bed. She stripped off what is actually the most functional piece of her outfit in an environment that is, based on the look of it, small and cozy even if it's nominally "public." Kind of like those very tiny bars in Japan that are the size of a closet and only have a few seats but still manage to have everything you need. Being barefoot is a form of vulnerability, like a dog exposing its belly. And doing that with a drink in hand, looking wistfully around the room, probably to the only other person in the tiny bar, is a clear invitation to be approached.

I'm an idiot. I'm a giant, colossal retard. Pic related is me, and up there is my tripcode.

So it seems that this wasn't the first time I thought of a Battle Clash/Super Metroid connection. A year or more ago, some time after I'd first posted about the sounds I found in Super Metroid, I thought of checking Battle Clash and Metal Combat as potential sources for those sounds--the idea being that they were both developed by the same people who made Super Metroid, the unidentified two voices I found might have been leftovers from those games. Well, I ripped Metal Combat's sound samples, listened to a few of them, and... completely forgot that I did this until today, when I opened my SNESSOR folder and *thought* I still had my Super Metroid rip saved there, completely forgetting that I moved that to its own folder and ripped MC to the SNESSOR folder. So I spent close to an hour earlier convinced that I was listening to Metroid SFX (to be fair, they do seem to use some of the same instrument samples) when I wasn't, and unwittingly posting absolute bullshit about there being leftovers from another game in SM. It wasn't until I reached the end and realized I never heard "The last Metroid..." that I realized what an idiotic mistake I had made. Please call me a stupid faggot.

THAT BEING SAID... since I went through of reviewing every sound sample in Metal Combat (and then Battle Clash after that), I can safely rule out the original two samples that I'd discovered (the ones I first posted about and tried to bring to TCRF's attention) being leftovers from either of those titles. No, these are 100% unidentified and native to Super Metroid, as far as I can tell, and they're unused by any creatures in the game (continued in next post 'cause I was hitting the character limit):

Male groan:

https://vocaroo.com/1gtXXLrwPulW

It's like a "ooaaah!". Might've been intended for a scene of a scientist getting killed at Ceres. Some of the sounds SNESSOR rips play back at different speeds than you'd expect, and that may be an issue with the program (it is ancient and it's a wonder it still works on modern Windows machines), or it could just as well be that the samples just happened to be stored that way in the ROM for whatever archaic reason. However, this one sounds like it's playing at the correct speed.

Female moan:

https://vocaroo.com/14akQ1zCZQ9A

A voice saying "ooohhh". Definitely sounds female, but it's so short and muffled that there's isn't much to say about it. I got excited when I first heard it because I was looking for the Minako Himano voice sample that was deemed too sexy for Nintendo, and I really wanted to believe that I found it. I'd almost given all hope that this could be it until I found the "Last Metroid is in captivity" samples and discovered that the speed/pitch was about 70% slower than it actually played in the game (again, I don't know if this actually how it's stored in the ROM or a defect of SNESSOR, but it rips this way every time on every dump of the game I tested). Certain instrument samples played too slow as well, and there are even a few sound effects that need to be sped up to be heard as intended.

I pitched it up a bit, slowed it down a bit, and this was the result:

https://vocaroo.com/1bwC4ZfaqhI0

It's a woman. And she's moaning. Enough to be considered too provocative by 1990s Japanese office worker standards? Who knows, but I think it's something worth documenting and looking further into. This is the entire soundrip, with all the instrument samples I felt I could identify labeled and separated into folders by instrument type (Percussion, Brass, etc.). Apologies for any that I mislabeled. You'll find that a number of them have names like "Unidentified sound" or "Unidentified brass", and those are all samples that I feel are probably used as instruments by the game, but that I just couldn't place what exactly they were. In addition to those unidentified instruments, there's a good chance that there's a handful or so left among the SFX that my ears didn't pick up as instruments because they play at a much different pitch/speed in-game. So although I went through the trouble of labeling a bunch of them, you might want to queue up all the SFX in a playlist yourself. Maybe play around the with speed and pitch if you have time, too. You'll probably find stuff I missed.

I appreciate the offer, but this point I might as well add them to the article myself whenever I find the time. I'll have to look up how to upload audio and embed it, I don't know too much about that.

As an aside... I just noticed that someone who is not me mentioned the male voice sample on the article's "Talk" page, and according to the edit history he did so the day after I posted about it about it here and on the forums over there (http://jul.rustedlogic.net/thread.php?id=18895).). That makes sense. Reminds me of that group on YouTube who have been doing those SNES soundtrack restorations (The Brickster). While restoring the Super Mario World and LttP soundtracks they've discovered that some of the original samples sound so different uncompressed that if they didn't compare the waveforms to each other they'd never have known they were the original sounds used by Koji Kondo (Case in point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9uhq3kUnik))

well, she had basically no narrative as a character beyond her physical capabilities until SM. The story's narrative up until then was purely driven by environment and the player challenging it with a toolkit owned by the character.

Even in SM, you we're immediately exposed to her identity in the game initially from the prologue or epilogue, only from her death or from the demo scroll.

But the rules for an interesting character in a video game aren't 1:1 with other mediums like books or movies

>Being a hot blonde lady doesn't preclude this, but it does mean it's irrelevant and I don't need her in underwear to entice me.

and thats fine if its not your cup of tea, but it isn't irrelevant, and being dismissive of it is basically cherry-picking. I mean, the whole series is filled with sci-fi homages, and if you take away Ripley's dialogue you get a more comparable analog to Samus, unless you want to argue that Sigourney wasnt hot.

I don't understand the conversation that was going on earlier about Samus being capable out of her suit? I remember the end of Zero Mission being like you have to be stealthy until you can get back into your suit. It's one of the older games where you can play through the game entirely without the suit, isn't it?

Who knows but since Nintendo would never sanction such a thing as the two teaming up for hilarity we'll never know how hilarious they could be when trading energy, outside the possibility of hobbyists with mad skills finding this to be a good idea and putting something together. I'd give it a shot but I am no programmer and I do not intend to learn how to be one. Anyway. Lol.

That's not at all a prerequisite. It's certainly possible to spin a story, or at least some kind of implied visual narrative if its a single image, where the audience is witnessing Samus having sex or being raped while still being in-character. It takes some thoughtfulness into how that would play out, which most porn creators don't invest, but there's no personality type that is inherently irreconcilible with pornography. "Given a situation like X, how would this character behave" is an important thing to think about in any kind of storytelling, not just porn.

Picrel is what Samus looked like as a three year old. Samus looks like a girl in this canonical backstory. Samus is referred to with feminine pronouns in this canonical backstory. Thus, it serves to reason that Samus has two X chromosomes in this canonical backstory, because there's never been any evidence to suggest she's trans outside of a troll-ish response by a non-essential developer who has long since left the series.

Samus Aran is 100% female.

The thing I don't get is why Metroid 2 even gets mentioned in the same sentence as Metroid in terms of games that are hard to stomach or haven't aged well or however younger series fans want to put it. There have been several ways to play Return of Samus for a really long time now, and the zoomed in camera honestly isn't that hard to get used to. I've been saying this a lot lately in all these recent Metroid threads we've had, but Metroid 2 really isn't even in the same league as Metroid 1 when it comes to controller-throwingly tough, archaic game design. There are two schools of thought on the concept how Zero Suit works. The first is that it's just a bodysuit, the second is that it's actually an artificial second skin layer. Then Other M came out and all official media since pointed towards the regular bodysuit theory.

The nobody cares part was hyperbolic, but from the grand majority of people I talk to usually they're just in it for the wank material and everything else is just superfluous. And I say this as someone who more often than not refuses to read most untranslated doujins cause I don't like not knowing what the characters are saying.
That being said considering the vast majority of lewd let alone straight up pornographic material of Samus and most characters in fiction are wildly out of character and the audience for said material is very large considering the near universal praise pin ups and the like can get from people on social media it's fair to say most people don't care. Would they appreciate it more probably, I could agree with that assertion. But what comes first to them is just having appealing or pleasing art that aligns with their sexual interest. Same can be said for fan art in general but that's a whole other topic.
This is all on top of the fact that the majority of people producing and consuming this content have a different level of interest and appreciation in Metroid as a series. Obviously the thread with far more die hard and invested Metroid fans will hold this stuff up to more scrutiny, but the rando who's probably played 1 or 2 Metroid games in his life and has seen Samus more in Smash Bros. than her home series won't care if she's in character or not while taking dick.

I think this is the problem presented by Samus. In a scenario where she's being raped she'd be defiant and combative throughout. She wouldn't "break" and would probably just be extremely pissed off. But that personality trait is extremely rare in porn because I guess most people aren't into it?

Yeah I'd think most people into the rape/non-con sub genre like the complete submission angle or at the very least defiance that's then turned into complete submissiveness. The whole point is to prove that despite their strength and willpower they can't beat dick, so it wouldn't be seen as a successful rape if they didn't get mind breaked. I personally think there is appeal to a completely strong willed woman keeping her composure and attitude even in a hopeless situation but I'm sure the people who make that kind of content especially Japanese artist definitely aren't into it.
That being said I think artist like Kon-kit have doujins like that, where the woman getting raped is usually always defiant and rude or at the very least gets the last laugh over her aggressor.

It's the only thing that makes any sense for Samus. She's a bounty hunter that regularly pursues the most dangerous creatures in the galaxy and is physically a peak human. She'd have to be physically overpowered for any rape to even be possible and her mental and emotional conditioning has gotten her through far more terrifying situations. She'd be absolutely seething from being violated but there's no way she would be afraid. She'd see her attackers with such disdain and disrespect that they'd be the losers in the scenario. "You have to resort to rape because you're that worthless and I would never touch you if I had a choice" kind of thing. It would be a pyrrhic victory for the rapists. They wouldn't walk away feeling like they bested her. It'd be like trying to say you "beat" a professional boxer by hitting him with a baseball bat.

As for any consensual sex, Samus doesn't seem to have much of a social life. She's pretty mission focused to the point that immediately after dropping off the baby metroid at Ceres she immediately went looking for another bounty to hunt, which could have been only like a few days at most after the end of Metroid II, which seems to have taken place immediately after Metroid 1, because after seeing the Metroids in person she was like "fuck this" and just went to kill them all. So at best I can see her sex life being just a handful of casual encounters whenever she does decide to take in some downtime. Probably a heartbreaker because of it. "Sorry, I don't think we'll be seeing each other again but it was fun."

Yuck, she was raised by bird people and you're infusing her with a gross western roastie hookup culture mindset. I can't see Samus just casually fucking strangers like that. According to Metroid lore, as I understand it, after being raised by the Chozo she want straight into the GFP academy, where according to Other M she befriended Adam's brother Ian and was implied to have romantic feelings for him and/or Adam. That's as close to a normal human connection as she's had.

What really grinds my gears about this is that before there was even a Zero Misison I used to argue with people online over the canonicity of the Super Metroid comic. My hunch was that Itoh was probably given access to behind the scenes story material, which I based on the fact that he was featured in the Special Thanks credits of a few SNES games back then and had even worked on Star Fox 2 in some capacity as a character designer (Fara, a character that originated from his comic adaption of Star Fox, was featured in one of the SF2 betas). I felt vindicated when a lot of the comic ideas resurfaced in the ZM manga, but then some of the same people who argued that the comic wasn't canon just moved the goalpost to the manga not being canon either.

If you know about the Star Fox Mission File Printout (aka the official Japanese guide that was advertised in the manual), you'll know that Benimaru Itoh was heavily involved in that too and included illustrations that bear striking similarities to the Nintendo Power comic (lollipop-sucking Pepper and all, which I'm sure left a lot of Japanese kids scratching their heads), but the story ultimately diverged. For example, instead of Fox's father being a victim to Andross's bomb on a delivery or whatever, which created the awesome black hole and left him stranded on a space whale thing, he was instead chasing space pirates and accidentally blasted the smiling asteroid that sent him to the black hole (matching more with the game, with the wreckage of his ship seen at one of the destinations). The space whale was given a separate explanation, and was implied to be part of the space/sea-lifeforms of the area instead of an alien spaceship with the appearance of a whale in Fox's dimension (or whatever explanation the Nintendo Power comic came up with). Point is, the Nintendo Power adaptations may have referenced canonical elements, but to call them straight-up canon to the games, especially with significant differences and additions to the narrative, doesn't really fly.

Something I never really understood - why did Nintendo retire the term "Space Hunter" in favor of "bounty hunter"? The Prime 3 devs apparently wanted to include bounty missions as sidequests, but Nintendo didn't want to show Samus collecting bounties in the Retro Studios (or any) games. They stopped calling her a Space Hunter after Metroid II, with only the Zero Mission manual using "bounty hunter" and "space hunter" interchangeably, and likely accidentally since the text was edited from the NES manual except to change the foundation of the Galactic Federation from 2000 to 2003 for some reason and add a bit about Zebes being Samus' home. Was "Space Hunter" too close to "Space Pirate" or something? Seems to fit better for the image Nintendo wants for Samus. Even Captain Falcon was more of an actual bounty hunter.

>The Prime 3 devs apparently wanted to include bounty missions as sidequests, but Nintendo didn't want to show Samus collecting bounties in the Retro Studios (or any) games.
Weird isn't it? She even mentions leaving Ceres station to search for 'another bounty to hunt' in the intro to Super Metroid, so it wasn't like it was some new concept. Yet there's the Prime 3 you mentioned, and also in interviews from around the time of Zero Mission I seem to recall Sakamoto downplaying the whole bounty hunter thing and making her out to be kind of a warrior for hire instead (he may have used the word space hunter, I don't remember). So I was really surprised when Nintendo Treehouse played that video package of Sakamoto during their E3 coverage where he very clearly called her a bounty hunter.

Truth is there was never much thought put into Samus being female. Making her female was put in as part of the reward gimmick for the finishing the first game.

I've autistically wrote a whole plot for a crossover series with like all of Nintendo's space franchises including Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero, Kirby and even Pikmin. nope, classic sexualized characters do a good job of staving off (or delaying) overt ideological grandstanding.

There's a reason why Lara Croft for example had to be completely redesigned and rebooted, as they couldn't shove their shit in otherwise.

Thanks to Metroid I and tradition of stripping down Samus in every game, it's been very difficult for non-fans to shove their headcanon on Samus to make her something she never was. It acts as a natural barrier to those who attempt to ruin things from within.

In any case, read the board sticky if you don't think Game Boy Advance games are considered retro by this site's standards.

It was the first Metroid I've beaten, although I've dicked around in Metroid and Super Metroid without accomplishing anything before.

Samus is slut with big tits and ass!

>> No.7903739

What we can glean of Samus's personality from the games, I keep waffling on whether she's largely chaste and doesn't have sex a lot due to being married to the job or a liberated turbo slut who finds random hookups whenever possible to get it out of her system between missions and does all the weird stuff. Both seem to make sense in context.

I imagine because she was raised by old birds her social skills are really lacking. So shes all business most of the time and prefers to just hang out in crowded areas with lots of other humans when shes not on the job. Probably never had a boyfriend and has no idea how to start a relationship in the first place.

>> No.7903876

>>7903739
My head-canon has always been very few people would ever recognize her out of her suit so if she goes out socially it's not as Samus Aran.

>> No.7903903

So what does that mean then? Lots of anonymous sex?

This is actually a good way to justify her being a submissive bimbo. She's great in a fight due to her training but in normal social situations she's practically autistic. So despite being tall and muscled that lack of socialization would make her too trusting and easy to take advantage of. Like she can be talked into giving footjobs by any random goon because she doesn't understand the dynamic or why she should say no. She wouldn't be in any physical danger so people taking sexual advantage don't raise alarm. Basically a rule 63'd Goku.

>> No.7904460

>>7903972
I think you're mostly right in theory. The only part that I think contradicts canon is:
>Like she can be talked into giving footjobs by any random goon
Since there's no way to ask her to perform a sexual favor for you without her knowing that it is a favor (e.g. telling her that the muscles in your penis are sore and you could really use a massage or whatever). But Other M's flashbacks (sorry, I know, but it's canon) show that when she first enlisted in the Galactic Federal Army she was aloof, even defiant, toward her comrades and superiors. Then over time, she mellowed out a little and befriended Anthony Higgs and Ian Malkovich, but still, you've got to think that someone with that kind of temperament would still be reserved and perhaps a little untrusting around people. So while I think yes, someone whom she's befriended could take advantage of her kindness, a random goon could not.

>> No.7904701

>>7904460
This.

Taking Other M into account, Samus is bad with social interactions but when she does form a connection she becomes excessively attached. So a random person requesting sexual favors, or even just trying to strike up a conversation, will probably be refused. She won't be mean, exactly, but it would be awkward. She would be distant and aloof, a loner. But if someone actually happened to get in her good graces, she would bend over backwards to please them. So someone could easily take advantage of her by slowly earning her trust. She wouldn't have the social experience to recognize the deception and the desire to keep a "friend" would lead her to acquiesce to pretty much any request or be very easily emotionally manipulated.

What's interesting about this is that traits of this nature aren't too far off from actual autism.

>> No.7904712

>>7904701
Another possible scenario is that as a bounty hunter with this kind of autism means she might not understand the social complexities of prostitution. Meaning that she would accept payment for pretty much anything and may even consider it an easier job than her usual missions. She would be distant and uncomfortable but put up with it because she's being compensated and doesn't understand how it's different from being paid to hunt Metroids.

Now you've got me imagining scenarios wherein Anthony might ask a friendly sexual favors of Samus. I hate to admit that Samus could be that gullible, but it does make sense given her upbringing. I think the only two other people she was close to were Ian and Adam, though, and I can't see Ian taking advantage of her knowing his big brother would probably kill him if he found out.

I don't know if it's gullibility, exactly. She's just very receptive to being shown kindness. She spent an entire game obliterating a species and then makes friends with a baby of that exact same species just because it didn't try to murder her. So she might be pretty submissive in anything remotely like a relationship. She would likely recognize and retaliate against actual abuse but if she ever had an actual boyfriend she could easily be a sub.
