In that original description, he even said he was limited in choices due to the hardware. He wanted blue, but had to settle on purplish.

It's not shocking that he would change it later when not as limited.

just gonna take this opportunity to recommend Mario Golf: Advance Tour. great game. i have toadstool tour as well; a lot of games that appeared on both console and GBA end up with the handheld game being a scaled down, crappier versions of the console version. but advance tour is a totally different experience than the gamecube game

the nes produced a lot of out of gamut colors, by the very nature of the tech there's no definitive color. having such a rigidly defined look for your games wasn't a big priority back then. don't derail this thread with this autistic argument

The Japanese have a really weird relationship with color names, so you have to take isolated quotes with a grain of salt, especially if it involves blue or green.

I don't think in English blue and green were historically considered the same color category. It is true that in older periods of English, purple was not a distinct color category but was a shade of blue, hence why we call things like violets and blueberries "blue" to this day. Orange was also a later color to be thought of as a category, in Old English the color was just called "gealuread" (yellow red) and was a shade of red, though the only instance I can think of today where we still refer to orange things as red is when we talk about red hair.

But yes, color terms in language can evolve. It's a complicated topic. Every language can see and talk about the same colors, but different languages classify colors differently. "Pink" is something we consider a full blown "color", with its own unique shades and tints, while other languages would call that color a mere shade of red. In some languages, blue and green might both be one category. However English probably wasn't one of these languages. The roots for Blue and Green are pretty consistent across the Germanic languages which would indicate that they were separate color categories before the Anglos ever stepped foot on England.
