There's lots of crap, but there's certainly lots of amazing stuff, too. Arcane Dimensions is one of the famous examples, it's huge and dense as fuck, and stupidly gorgeous to look at, if you loved Quake, you should give AD a try.

QuakeSpasm is a popular one. You'll want to tweak the .ini files to get rid of stuff like the smear filter and what not, and enabling the demo loops, but once set up it'll be good.

Here, use mine, and just scroll through the config.ini quickly to alter anything you want, filtering is off:

Copy these into your id1 subfolder, and whatever subfolder of whatever mod or mappack you want to play, then open the console and type game ad to play Arcane Dimensions. I wish a lot of this stuff could just be defined quickly and easily in the options menu, and that there was just a menu selector for installed mappacks and mods, but once you've got all this down and configured, you're ready to go.

This. I suck at Doom mapping, but working with Trenchbroom it came rather naturally to me.
In fact, for HUH I remade an old Doom map and it was much, much better in 3D.

I am working on a few other different and have neither the time, nor (and this is especially important) the nerve to re-learn Trenchbroom (although that's not a big problem) and all the compiler bullshit or come up with an idea.
Simply put, I just don't feel like it at the moment.

-admod versions just had some limits raised iirc, this has since been included in regular versions.
use Spiked if you want the extra particles and custom HUD, or use vkQuake if you're fine without those but want uncapped framerate.

No. It only required a special engine in the early versions because Quakespasm didnt have raised map limits yet.
Although now you can optionally play it in Quakespasm Spiked to get fancy particle and weather effects.

transplanting the config should work just fine.
if you're planning to do this a lot, it makes sense to save the settings you care about to autoexec.cfg (just copy config.cfg and edit out the clutter)

Gloom for Quake 2 was one of my favorite mods. Fond memories of that one. Interesting "base building" mechanic, probably a precursor to Savage or the FPS/RTS genre, if there are any others.

My other favorite Quake 2 mod was Midnight Laser mine CTF... pretty lame, I suppose, but turning off the lights, giving everyone laser mines and flare guns was just a lot of fun to me.
