What was people's reaction in 1992 when Sonic homaged Dragonball?
Also, what are your honest thoughts on the Sonic 2 special stages design? Especially the last 2.

>> No.7858416

Fucking awesome. Sonic 2’s Super Sonic music is the best fucking ever end of story. Even Sonic 3’s jingle when going super/hyper doesn’t match it. Also the special stages were awesome, I make it a point to grab all chaos emeralds ASAP whenever I play Sonic 2. While S3&K is certainly a very awesome game I’m honesty quite torn on whether I prefer S2 or S3&K. But yeah I love Sonic 2’s special stages and holy fucking shit the Super Sonic music in Sonic 2.

You'd have to go on a Japanese forum to get an answer to that. Most of us didn't see Dragon Ball Z till the mid-90s.

Only Asians and ultraweebs knew what Dragonball was in the early 90s, it was something people pieced together several years later when DBZ aired on TV

But don't you think the patterns are shoddy on special stages 6 and 7?
There's no logical indication of which side rings are gonna pop up, it's all blind guess, which forces you to memorize it.
Not impossible but I ended up not feeling as satisfacted when I managed to beat them, more like "thank god it's over"

Well there’s definitely some memorisation involved but I still managed to beat every special stage first attempt after a massive hiatus from Sonic 2. If I’m gonna complain about special stages I hated the ones in Sonic Mania when I first played the game, but even after some time I managed to start appreciating them. Those took a hell lot of getting used to.

I think Dragon Ball is pretty lame as far as anime, but I also don't have any nostalgic attachment to it. As for the Sonic 2 special stages they are my least favorite because they strike me as the most unfair special stages of the Genesis era. I also have an autism where I won't complete a Sonic game unless I get all the emeralds so it has made me much more reluctant to replay 2 as opposed to even 1 although 1 is the inferior game in my opinion (3&K being easily the best)

>Innocent thread about Sonic and DBZ
>it quickly devolves into /int/ shitposting
well, I guess it can't be helped.
i always thought how it was weird that USA got into DBZ last compared to the rest of the world.
Something actually curious is that a very early draft of Dragon Ball (not Z) was made by Harmony Gold, the same company that did Robotech by cannibalizing Macross, Mospeada and Southern Cross.
With dragon ball, they didn't mix different series, but they did some really weird changes, like changing Goku's name to Zero. That early DB dub was used as a base to make a latin american dub, which also used the Zero name. Neither the USA or the LatAM versions had much success, but the latin version had more recognition in general, while the original USA one went completely under the radar at the time.
USA also had several attempts at making DBZ popular throughout the 90s, even editing some of the movies in DVD (I remember those were some of the very first anime DVDs I ever saw, back in 1998 or so), but overall DBZ was still an obscurity in USA, whereas in Europe it was mainstream since the early 90s, and in latin america since the mid 90s. In many latin american countries, DBZ was also popular thanks to all the stuff coming from Spain.

Not sure ot intentionally did though.
Super forms existed before DB did and on a character who has spikes will of course ALSO have spikes in powered up form.
Then you have to distingush the power form, an other color is the best way of doing that and I would too either use red or orange or yellow.
Maybe it was one but it could easily also be coincidental.

I wonder if there's any interview with Sonic Team people where they actually confirm it's a DBZ reference.
But, considering it's a 1992 game from Japan, I think it'd be TOO much of a coincidence. 1992 was around the time Goku transformed into SSJ for the first time (maybe 1991, not sure), and it was hugely popular.
The way Sonic's spikes go up also remind of the way Goku's hair go up (instead of just being the same regular spikes but golden), and also Sonic's eyes turn green/blue as well.
Goemon in Mystical Ninja for N64 also has a SSJ tranformation.

The xenophobia plateaued by end of the 80s I think. WWII was starting to be a long time ago, Japan's bubble popped so they weren't as much of an economic threat, that hostile generation was aging out of the core consumer demo. Pop culture was flooded with a million movies about ninjas and karate, Akira sparked the anime craze, and Nintendo became a household name for kids

Ronin Warriors aired dubbed around 1995, the characters used their original Japanese names, they weren't renamed "Tom" and "Jane" like earlier butchered localizations

I think people overreact to the difficulty of the special stages. You DON'T need to memorize them just because you cannot see obstacles coming from out of view on turns, what you need to do is identify places where YOU CANNOT TELL IF YOU ARE SAFE, and then TREAT THOSE AS UNSAFE! It's that simple. You will still have enough coins, they don't habitually place huge amounts of them along the insides of turns, you just won't lose your coins to shit you couldn't see, and then you'll win. No memorization, just intelligence.

Things were different back then... there weren't almost pre-programmed "worldwide releases" of every major anime 1 year after its Japan debut. Sometimes, one country bought an anime, said anime became a hit over there, the neighbor country decided to buy it as well, and then the domino effect did the rest. Other times, another popular 80's anime would get bought by a single European country and that's it.
