Not a fan of the first game itself, but I love Monster World series and Monster Lair.

Can somebody tell me the story of why these games are so similar. WTF happened?

They are the same game. AI is just a console port of Wonderboy with this guy >>7856494 reskinned in the game cause the developer sold the Wonderboy character to Sega.

What went wrong? Its so much worse than the ones for NES and PC Engine.

Wonder Boy's developer, Westone (pronounced "west stone"), got around Sega's ownership of the franchise by porting the titles under various new franchises and publishers, most notably via Hudson under the Adventure Island branding.

And Saiyuuki World for the Famicom is essentially the Famicom port of WonderBoy in Monsterland. Not sure how different it is beyond the reskin.

Adventure Island as a series perfected whay Wonder Boy, the original, was going for. But Wonder Boy morphed into the Monster World series, going in a completely different direction.

>> No.7857275

>>7857224
Some of the Wonder Boy (Monster World subseries) games were also published by other people in different franchises, yet still developed by Westone. Some examples: Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Sega) is also Bikkuriman World (Hudson), Wonder Boy III is also Dragon's Curse/Adventure Island (Hudson), and Wonder Boy in Monster World (Sega) is The Dynastic Hero (Hudson/TTi).

Between Wonder Boy and Adventure Island 1, I vastly prefer AI simply because of the music. Otherwise they're almost the same game, except WB's music is unexplicably annoying, while AI's music is timeless classic chiptune catchiness.
As for the rest of the series, I also favor Adventure Island for pushing the pure platforming forward and perfecting the formula. Adventure Island 2 and 3 are easily on my top platformers of all time.
From Wonder Boy, I really like WBIII: Monster Lair on Mega Drive, kinda underrated entry that actually goes for an arcade platformer instead of an adventure game.
