Would the virtual boy have been a success if Nintendo made it full color And not red and black?

>> No.7856086

All it needed was a head strap of some kind, the palette wasn’t very bothersome.

>> No.7856087

No, it was too uncomfortable and it caused headaches, cramps, and nausea.

>> No.7856125

>>7856082
It was already an overpriced piece of shit with a single color. working out the timing for three times as many LEDs or using camcorder monitors would have made it even more expensive.

>> No.7856264

If more people tried it then it would have succeeded, most people didn't understand what it was, they didn't understand the 3d aspect and probably assumed it was similar to some tiger handheld crap. When I finally tried the real thing it was way different to what I led to believe from the magazines back in the day. I even let a non gamer friend play the boxing game on mine and even after playing he just assumed it was some electro mechanical game from the 70's. I'm that people with vision problems tried and then told everyone it was crap. Also seeing the previews that looked ok but they were nothing at the time compared to n64.

I think the vb is one biggest advancements in graphics that nintendo just let slip through their fingers, the technology was even better than high end pc stuff.

I don't think colour would help, on the 3ds sometimes the different colours cross over from the different sides for some slight ghosting.

I think what really did the system in was when nintendo saw signs that the n64 could be struggling they panicked and didn't want the vb to distract the public from the n64.

>>7856104
I played mine for hour at a time an never got headaches and I've gotten headaches playing regular games on occasions on crt and lcd. All these rumors spread for the 3ds too but I think its not possible. I think that some people just aren't capable of seeing the 3d effect.

>> No.7856476

It’s ridiculous to know they considered it a portable.

>> No.7857180

>>7856082
I don't think that was the main problem, it needed some kind of head strap, and a more adjustable stand. IIRC it was also kind of expensive on launch.

>When I finally tried the real thing it was way different to what I led to believe from the magazines back in the day.
I think some of the devs said that it was kind of a difficult game to market, because you can't really show the game on video that easily (and certainly not the effect), and word of mouth is kind of limited, because you can't sit next to your pal and watch his gameplay, you can only like, sit and look at him peering into the goggles, as you roll your thumbs. For any other console in the world, you can look at the TV and see the action in full, or look over their shoulder and see the screen on their hand held, but not for the VB.

It was an incredibly poorly conceived console, the color display was legitimately the least of it's concerns
>Highly specialized gimmick reducing ease of development for developers
>You have to put your face into this fucking monstrosity to play
>Multiplayer?

I don't know, I wonder how hard Gunpei pushed for it to release, knowing how much it soured Nintendo's relationship with him. I wonder how anyone with a brain didn't scream that it was a fucking stupid idea, which makes me think it could have only ben released at Gunpei's insistence.

>> No.7857315

I thought they tested this and it would have been enormously expensive, hence red and black.

I'm sure it would. Shame you weren't around when they were designing the thing. You could have really saved it.

Just imagine If the VB had just stuck it out just one more year it could have gotten a pokemon game.
>>7857285
It was a failure of hardware and marketing for sure. I was 12 when it released so assuming I was the target demographic it seemed super gimicky and pointless. We all knew what real 3D was supposed to look like up till then and how portable a system in the "gameboy" family should be. Making it smaller at the time probably would have been technically impossible but they were afraid it would cut into mainline systems.

The solution would have been to make it a companion peripheral for the SNES and then eventually the N64. Probably something akin to the GBA/gamecube/four swords pairing. Imagine playing starfox 2 on the snes and unlocking secret areas with a wireframe VB version.

RIP Gunpei Yokoi, creator of the Wonderswan.

>> No.7860432

>>7859674
I did some research and turns out that Gunpei really didn't want the system to release and Nintendo forced it out anyway.

Then I read about how he died, like I knew it was a car accident but I didn't know he had gotten out of a car to inspect the damage from a fender bender and that's how he got killed. It's fucking still hurts to know that's how he went.

>> No.7860516

People on this board will defend anything as long as it’s now somewhat obscure. The Virtual Boy was objectively a misfire from Nintendo even if you sort of liked a couple of its games. There’s certainly not enough to justify it as an overall concept.

>> No.7860531

>>7856264
>If more people tried it then it would have succeeded
Very unlikely. What you saw was what you got. The VB was advertised as a 32-bit system but graphically wasn’t much more impressive than the Game Boy. That’s not even factoring in the eyesore red and black.

the second point is the reason that advertising VR games is hell. That's been the biggets roadblock to success, aside from the oerpriced and overcomplicated hardware for PC setups.

he was a GOAT and I also like how he complained even in mid-90s about how new games were starting to just be the same shit with new story/characters. He was a real bro and we will forever be worse off without his influence on gaming. RIP Yokoi, he and Ralph Baer are top-tier.
