Not an action rpg, not a pure action game. Puzzle elements, but not a puzzle game. Has story, but not a pure adventure game (adventure as in text adventure or point n click). Not completely linear, but not completely open-world either.

Typically because they combine multiple genres so there is no clear main one. A bit of running and exploring, a bit of jumping but not centered about it, exploring to collect some key items but not centered around it, a bit of fightin in melee or shootin...

The defination of an adventure game is a game that requires collecting and using objects to solve puzzles. Text Adventure, Point n Click, Resident, Evil, Zelda all fit follow this pattern.

Action means the game is not turn based and involves fighting.

I consider it to be a game with some sort of player skill based gameplay (platforming, combat, whatever) combined with a somewhat open world or Areas that offer exploration and a degree of non linearity.
