i mean there's some pacman clones and shit that will run but seriously "cool games"? not that many for a machine like that
even if you upgrade with a V20 and a VGA Wonder or even any Hercules compatible card that's faster than the original, max out the RAM, might have some more fun with flight simulator but thats it

there are plenty of decent early ms-dos games. just because they’re smaller and less ambitious than later games doesn’t mean they’re worthless.

>> No.7841598

>>7841594
you ain't gonna play many early ms-dos games on that thing
i don't think you know much about the hardware being talked about
sure you might be able to run kings quest with the cga mode but would you want to compared to the c64 version?

you'll probably have more fun hooking it up to a WiFi232 and playing MUDs or shitposting to various BBSes that some hobbyists have set up.

Wasteland, but you'd need more RAM than stock and it would be a stretch.

most of these already have full 640k memory in them and if there isn't you can find RAM board on Ebay quite easily.

oiy god, this board is hopeless.

https://www.mobygames.com/attribute/sheet/attributeId,64/p,2/

there. there is almost 1900 games listed here which will run on this machine. that alone is more games than exists for any cartridge-era console.

https://www.mobygames.com/attribute/sheet/attributeId,65/p,2/

put in a VGA card and NEC V20 and there's a couple hundred more here.

This doesn’t sound right. I know nothing about the Compaq Portable’s OS but just from OP’s pic, I doubt it’s capable of running anything more advanced than text based games.

>> No.7843936

>>7843929
the stock video card was a MDA/CGA "hybrid" meaning it's CGA but the internal monitor displays text at 9x14 resolution.

I like learning about old hardware. That said, I don’t think I’m way off base in assuming you’re probably going to primarily be playing text adventure games on it.

>> No.7844365

>>7844359
Okay, but I’m assuming extremely rudimentary ones. I’d imagine text based adventure games would be more fun to play on it than anything with graphics.

>> No.7844371

>>7844365
you would get monochrome graphics if you used the built in monitor and CGA pink/aqua shit if you had an external monitor. but as mentioned above there is still more games than you can ever play in a lifetime.

Yes, CGA via composite looks beautiful and most MS-DOS games before 1985-ish supported it. I don't know what 8-bit guy was talking about saying it was rarely supported.

>> No.7847738

>>7847727
Maniac Mansion doesn't really support composite mode, this has been debunked. what it does it set normal CGA mode and use the Tandy graphics data instead. it's believed that someone at LucasArts heard somewhere that composite mode was 160x200 resolution and just assumed it worked like Tandy mode 8.

>> No.7847742

>>7847738
Still better than nothing.

>> No.7847745

anyway you can also just use the normal CGA graphics in MM with the composite output which doesn't look particularly worse unless you're bothered by everyone having pink skin
