Then I decided to continue my adventure with Soul Reaver 2. Holyshit.

I quite like SR1, but its biggest problem is that it's so obviously unfinished and not what was originally in mind. Even if you don't know the game's production history there are conspicuous oddities, and once you do you'll never be able to unsee it all.

SR2 does suck though, yes.

Legacy of Kain in general was one of the biggest examples back in the day of a series that people played for the story. The gameplay is just block puzzles and (mostly) skippable combat (that isn't even that good to begin with).

That really goes to show that you can't always adapt 2D sprite based animations to 3D animation.

Chakan on Genesis didn't exactly have many frames of animation for attacking to begin with. Like, no inbetween frames exist.

Hell, even the pickups/upgrades were more or less worthless.
What's the point of extending your lifebar, anyway, if the Reaver only manifests at full health and you want to have that thing out at all time and (IIRC) your lifebar in the spectral realm has a fixed length?
Or additional spell points when the glyphs are gimmicky at best with only like two that actually hurt/kill while the rest only stuns enemies.

I'll be honest: I love Melchiah's design but I can't help but feel that in terms of complexity and texture quality it didn't really work out that well with the hardware limitations of its time.
Even back then I thought that the arms and hands looked less like rotten corpses and patched skin and more like muddy blobs with random protrusions and silly suction cup fingertips.

Seems like they used the switch to a PS2-exclusive as an opportunity to overhaul everything, which might've been a bad idea considering how subtly off the combat and all of Raziel's animations feel in the final game.
