It's literally impossible to get more than 2% into the first level without losing a single life

No it isn't

How do you fall down the shaft at the very start without taking damage?

I can't enjoy Parodius anymore due to this. I'm not even an 1ccfag (otherwise I'd be playing Gradius instead), it just feels like shit to lose my stuff.

Yeah it's really hard to enjoy shmups like that.

>> No.7835576

relatable af, I'm trying to improve in Gekirindan (Saturn) and some times I barely start the game and alredy lost one live, but besides that, it's a good game

That's fine because that game is clearly unfinished, the last boss only has 1 pattern.

Play a Compile shmup if you want something less punishing.

Not him. I've read here about Compile shooters a few times. I've never been a good player, but I've always felt satisfied getting so far in a game, if I had fun. Even now, revisiting the games from my childhood, I can't finish all of them. Shoot'em ups are one of my thorns: I like them, as much as I suck on them.

However, even after reading about Compile shooters, the only one I did have fun with was Musha (granted, I've yet to try all of them). Super Aleste and Blazing Lasers had those very fast sections where you have to dodge the structure of the level, and that kills it for me. It's like a hardcore version of Battletoads' Turbo Tunnel. Also, Super Aleste has one of the most claustrophobic level designs I've ever seen in a shoot'em up. Gate of Thunder did it better.

That reminds me playing Super Bomberman with my little brother:

- Big bro, I lost all my lives...
- Told you not play carelessly. Just follow my tips.
- Please, let me borrow a life!
- Fuck! Again? Fine...
- There are no more lives left...
- Good! Then keep watching and learn how to play.
- Could you get a game over so we can get more lives?

It pissed me off a bit, but so much time later, I do miss playing with that dumb brat.

I did that with Contras and Ninja Gaiden on the NES (as well as many others) and now I'm untouchable.

another technique I employed as a kid was to get really good at just the first few levels and then quit, then make sure I master those levels fully before going onward, making me a master of the game as I was playing it.

>>7835850
I pulled that one when I was a kid. With Nina Gaiden 1. Mastered it until level 3. Other kids were awed. Then I said: "Shoot! What time is it? My mom is gonna kill me!". Kids pestered me about when I was going to finish the game, had one excuse after another. Living the lying life ain't easy, so I just stopped that.

In a sense, never. I did beat it a couple of times, but it wasn't easy, more like "lose a thousand times, win one", so I can't say I really improved. Nevertheless, I still like to play it. I get as far as I can, and stop playing after a few game overs. A fun game, indeed. Even being hard, its difficulty curve is fair.

Me with older Smash Bros games, especially Melee. I fucking refuse to use continues, but if I lose any of my five lives before the halfway point, we're starting over.
