The zombies have almost completely different textures in the N64 game. Pretty sure there are also less variety in zombie textures too. The RE2 port team had to crunch the PS1 textures down in size to fit them into the N64 hardware. Image related is are actual texture rips of Claire for both games.

I don't remember the N64 game being glitchy. I played it to the end multiple times with both quests, and in reverse order. The backgrounds on some occasions were pretty equal to the PS1 games', sometimes they were lower. But the way the N64 handled texture sizes, caused some of them to be stretched. The audio is one area where the N64 game actually outdoes the PS1 game. Bot really with the audio sample quality. But the system uses Doulby surround using the factor 5 audio engine. Chris Hülsbeck even worked on converting the music from the PS1 to N64 and worked on the sound. With the proper 3D headphone or sound set up that can work with douby surround. The audio does have depth to it.

Listen to the sound of the metal staircase and walkway in the N64 game. You can hear it fade out as the Claire moves away from the camera. This is because of the doubly audio engine, that Angle Studios licensed from Factor 5. It was a selling point on the box.

This was the only version I had of the game, back then. It was the first RE game that I played from start to finish. Bought it from a rental shop as a 'previously played' title. Paid like $40.00. Though I did play RE1 on the PS1 before it. Just not to the end. The FMV looked like a bad VHS tape recording (or badly compressed), the developers tried to make it work. It was still impressive to see a few minutes worth of FMV and voice acting in an N64 game. I played the game with the d-pad. One of the few N64 games that I ever used the d-pad for. I had no problem with the controls. The game looked fine for an N64 title. When I did get around to playing the PS1 dual shock version, I was surprised how little was lost from the N64. When you consider the missing content from N64 to PS1 ports. Very little of RE2 was missing. The RAM PAK did have some noticeable different in the resolution output. The audio is still compressed. But the Doubly surround does add something. Other versions do not have this feature.Though PC, GCN and DC ports are better.

The N64 version came out a year after the Dual Shock release though. There is no reason it shouldn't have had that content. It's the only re-release that doesn't have them.

Also saying it's based on the original PSX version is not completely true. The DS version added a timer and a stats screen for Hunk and To-Fu. The N64 version doesn't have the stats screen but it did took the timer from the DS version. It also uses the revised version of the backgrounds that weren't in the original release.

Only because the devs cropped them

> The backgrounds on some occasions were pretty equal to the PS1 games', sometimes they were lower.

They're all lower. I have proper rips of every background right here. The resolution is lower because they're cropped at the top and bottom, and the quality is lower because of a conversion to poor quality jpg. Then, in game they end up stretched due to the low resolution, and if you use the RAM pack, they are upscaled which barely makes a difference as far as the bgs are concerned except for the fact that it crops and stretches them further.

Also, for all the talks about how this port was technically impressive and the devs were smart, even after reducing the quality the backgrounds still take a third of the cartridge space, not only that includes about 30 backgrounds that are never used in game so if they had gotten rid of that they could have fit some of the screens they deleted, because the backgrounds are loose jpg files on the cart, no compression method used whatsoever.

I'm not entirely sure how the BG's work in this game. From what I know of the N64 hardware (working with textures) it does have tile size limitations. Like 16x16, 32x32, 128,256 or whatever and the N64 BG's would have had to been reworked into those limitations. Also, te N64 doesn't store BG';s as JPG's. Also you're using a camera angle close up in a room with no enemy. In the N64 version that's about the only times the game really is in 480p, even with the ram pack. Most of the times it's not, as it constantly switches between 5 different internal resolutions and it doesn't often use 480p even when there is no enemy in the room.

The whole thing is a giant meme meant to look good in magazines. This way they can put nice 480p screenshots in magazines of the few camera angle that do use that resolution so people can claim it looks good. Try a room filled with zombies and the N64 version looks a lot worse than PSX, with or without the RAM pack.

The sad thing is that the disinformation worked. In reality using the RAM pack is a goddamn mess with the resolution changing at almost every single camera angle transition, it's very distracting. It's the only game I know which does something like that and there is a reason... usually games only change resolutions for menus and stuff like that, stuff where it's not important or noticeable.
