Yoshis island was in development for 5 years with all of Nintendos best working round the clock on it. They even chucked a Super FX2 chip in and at the end of the day it was the worst Mario game ever released at the time. God awful gameplay.

Now lets look at Mega Drive Altered Beast. Tight deadline of 8 weeks with everything about it being a home run. Gameplay, graphics ,music, story all top notch.

Altered beast was an arcade port, nothing about it was built from the ground up, it’s just simply an inferior arcade port. It’s not a good comparison to yoshis island.

Yoshis island was built from the ground up, integrated fresh new mechanics and pushed the snes to its graphical boundaries. It took a long time to make for that reason alone. The gameplay did indeed fall flat though imo, I can agree with you as well that it was the worst Mario game released at the time. But still not a good comparison with altered beast, which as I said before, just an arcade port.

If long dev times meant good games, Cyberpunk 2077 would've been the second greatest game of all time, next to Duke Nukem Forever.

Good dev's can make good games. Sometimes. Long dev times are actually a sign of massive problems usually. If your game is in dev for like 5+ years, chances are it's going to be a shitpile. See: Square Enix the past 20 years and every FF they've dumped out.

>Mega Drive Altered Beast
Ya blew it. I love Altered Beast, but the MD port is just a neutered version of the arcade game that holds no value beyond nostalgia if you have access to the original.

>simply an inferior arcade port
Mega Drive has parallax scrolling over arcade.
>fresh new mechanics
Did they ever bring back crying Mario or aiming eggs that way in any other game? I couldn't stand either.

>but the MD port is just a neutered version of the arcade game
Mega Drive has some advantages over arcade but the point of this thread was it was pumped out in 8 weeks to meet a deadline. If they had 5+ years like Nintendo it could have surpassed the arcade.

theres so many thing wrong/incorrect with your assessment, its tough to know where to start.

a game is not good or bad based on how long it took to develop. a short or long dev time is primarily related to creating art assets and polishing/defining the gameplay. thats where 80% of the dev time goes. so, if a dev team has more time to work on art and gameplay, usually this makes for a better game in the end.

yoshis island was fun af when it came out, and did some really cool new things. perhaps it was ahead of its time, or perhaps players were too excited about n64 and the 3d revolution at the time. the competition was tough for 2d games around that time.

also, why are you quoting miyamoto as if he's the only authority on game dev? he was only really influential in the 80s and 90s. modern game dev is vastly different than the small team console focused games he managed. the expectations from players have changed dramatically. these days, miyamoto is more focused on making mario theme parks. lol

This is his exact quote. Altered Beast was rushed and is better than almost all of his games.

I'm so tired of him. Just literally burnt out on responding to him and his anti-Nintendo cohorts. No other game company is the center of so much flamebait on /vr/. And you can't report them or anything, because it's not like they're breaking any rules. But the board just gets steadily worse the longer they get away with their trolling.

Yoshis Island is far more popular in the speed running community.
