It's either that or some shitty modern Nintendo game, a Witcher 1 discussion is underrated.

Witcher 1 was the best of the series. It's true to the retro principle of good games not being able to survive modernization. I'm still mad about 2 insisting that terrible action combat mechanics were the right choice.

2 is the best one for me, but I don't know what the fuck were they thinking with that combat and """stealth""".
Yeah, remember stealth sections? Didn't think so.

I think the combat would be passable without the retarded backstab mechanic.

It's more so that shit is broken and camera does whatever the fuck it wants.
Backstabs would not be that bad if not for the fact that you might get hit from another side of the room because attacks are target based instead of area based. Or that you can only roll forward, and if you want to roll backwards you gonna turn your back to the enemy first.
Or that the enemies have invincibility frames on the recovery animations, including almost 2 seconds long "I've fallen and I have to get up", and they will ignore any spell during that time.
Or, since it's target based instead of area, your hits will go through 4 enemies hitting only one.
Or the bosses Elf and Kingslayer for me would just stunlock you before the scene fades in and kill you before you can even react.
Or that when the game swaps the characters without warning you, you lose 80% of your moveset and options and still is expected to fight against the crowds.
It's passable once you'll get used to it, but it's not easy to get used to it at all.

Mobs aren't really the problem, it's the tedious collectathon you have to do before being able to progress.

You're right. The swamp has the best areas in the game. The isolated swamp tower was cool, and the elven hideout with all the Feainnewedd growing around. And the druid's grove felt magical and sacred with its lighting contrast to the merciless wetlands. Great dark fantasy aesthetics.
