The Neo Geo CD had to be made. However fucking SNK was too stupid and skimped on the SRAM, sucks it was so expensive back them. You needed to load up the SRAM with which was on a dick. They made the discs just so they didn't have to sell $500+ motherboards that they called games. Sadly even with that what you say is still true, didn't fix their abysmal market share.

The unfortunate thing is that a lot of people think of Neo Geo being copy paste if only for the very late output from the console, which honestly just a fallback for when the Hyper 64 bombed.

Stuff like 2001 and 2002 are 100% copy paste with awful audio. The Samsho 5 games are literally Rom Hacks of Samsho 4. Straight up just decompiled the rom and edited it. You can see all the old references to 4 in the code. Metal Slug 4 and 5 are much the same, and lack a lot of the creativity of 3.

It really wasn't until KoF2003 and SVC Chaos where you got some new stuff, but even SVC is let down by many old sprites, and shit backgrounds and music.

When you go back to KoF 2000 and everything before that, like Garou, Breakers, the original MSlug games, etc., and you see a lot of fresh new content, careful craft of art, smart refreshes to content, and even when a game was only a year apart, it was very different.

KoF 95 to 96 is very different, and likewise 96 to 97, and 98 to 99. There's only 3 AoF games, but they're all so different and brilliant. The Fatal Fury games rehash a bit for sure, but if you focus on Fatal Fury Special, Real Bout Special, and Real Bout 2, you'll see some very different games, especially when you finally get to Garou.

And none of this takes into account the wide variety of Shmups, sports games, and alt games like Shock Troopers and Spin Masters and Twinkle Star Sprites.

It's just those late official romhacks, coupled with a lot of bootlegs and everything else at that time that really hurt the legacy of the Neo Geo, which has a spectacular library, which still holds up today for about 80% of the content.

What? It had 7 MB of RAM in 1994 when the PS1 and Saturn had 2 MB, and that's not including the work ram of the 68k and program ram for the Z80. They out in literally as much RAM as they could, which at the time was enough RAM to hold the entirety of many games from their library, and some games would only need to do loading for a How to Play or the Demo mode. Even after the Saturn added a 4MB RAM cart it still wouldn't match the amount of RAm the NGCD had.

In the US, SNK of the US delayed the launch of the system. In the EU and Japan, it came out in 1994, which was a great time because the PS1 wasn't the juggernaut it would be, and 2D games still mattered.

In the US, SNK USA delayed it because they wanted to rework their units with faster drives to improve loading, and SNK JP said they would do it, but it turns out that wasn't entirely the problem, and the units couldn't be reworked as such, so they just released the units a year and half later in 1996, well into the time when the PS1 was killing it with 3D graphics. They couldn't get a distributor anymore, so it was mostly direct or smaller retailers, if that.

The disc speed is one thing, but the architecture is the big issue. The system has to load a lot of data for that era. 7 MB as opposed to maybe 512 or 1 MB of other consoles in some of the worst cases. Data is going in and out of buffers, and further, none of these games are designed to be run this way, and are instead being retrofitted, so you have a lot of sub-optimal loading. They fixed it tremendously with the CD-Z by designing that whole architecture better, but it was way too late by then, and the system being 2D-only ended up being its biggest problem.

It is the best console for fighters. Despite being a purist. I find MAME on a dual core CPU and flashed AMD GPU with tight settings on a CRT is just as good. I am so used to using a keyboard for fighters. I also have USB Saturn controllers for friends to use.

that depends heavily on the rom in question, and the bios being used

at least for old capcom fighters, ive had better luck with fbalpha in terms of accuracy, and definitely in terms of ease of use
MAME gets the job done, and done well, 90% of the time. but that other 10% of the time is usually a fucking headache
