There is no tournament, if there was a tournament it wouldn't be "street fighting". There is also no street fighting, because street fighting is sporadic and happens on the streets, not on Japanese rooftops or in Indian temples.

It seems to be a loose tournament with people registered all over the world. You need to travel to each place, challenge them, to move on. It's informal in that there appears to be no body behind it. This was before MMA, so it is similar to that in that it's people with all sorts of different styles.

They are "street fighters" rather than people who are officially part of any combat sports organization.

The tournament is a farce, it's just an excuse for Bison to draw out the strongest martial artists so he can either attempt to enlist them, enslave them, kill them, or in the case of Ryu steal him so he can put his brain in his body

Fatal Fury/The King of Fighters is where this criticism makes more sense. KOF is an official tournament that is broadcasted throughout the South Town/the world and in the very first game you have the likes of Billy Kane wielding a weapon, and Mai Shiranui throwing fans and shit in the second. It's get's even crazier as the series goes along.

Fatal Fury 3 is the only one with a good excuse since that's not any official tournament in that game.

The actual tournament is a pretty inconsequential part of the greater story, just watch the SF2 anime....some fights, you could say, seem to line up with the idea of a "loose tournament" such as Ryu fighting Fei Long or E. Small correction: V-Vega isn't top, but he's damn close to it. The top tier is Dhalsim (any ISM), V-Akuma, V-Sodom. I think he's high tier along with V-Karin and V-Sakura. He can guard crush really easily and his normals are fucked up and almost impossible to whiff punish (like ST), he also has a crouch cancel infinite. Can play super lame and fuck you up when he gets meter, I played against a good V-Vega on Fightcade (this guy played really lame and had all his combos on point) and it was so fucked up.
