Hey /vr/, have you ever tried making homebrew games for old consoles or computers?

I've made games for the CHIP-8, the ZX Spectrum (as I was born in the USSR learning to program for the Speccy was an absolute must), the C64 (my favorite platform by far). I have also tried and failed spectacularly at making a simple game for the PlayStation about a decade ago. In retrospect, I choose the worst possible set of tools for it then.

I love the 6502 chip and I'm currently looking for a challenge, so I thought of trying my hand at Atari 2600 development. Anyone here have experience with that?

There is a good rpg engine called sphere that used to dabble with, but never git too far. Shut is cool

I've been dicking around in BASIC, trying to make my own game. I tried to use BASIC on 2600 (via the Atari classics) but trying to code on my DS Lite's screen was a pain in the ass.

I was making a shooter called Radeon back in 1994, but never got past the ship design, controls, and animation of the ship. No enemies, no backgrounds, no gameplay. Subroutines kept fucking off. Same thing happened to the RPG I was making. Redundant traps to end the fight if the enemies were dead kept screwing off, and fights would run forever.

My fault for using QBasic, I guess, but I had no resources to learn C (or even compile it) at the time.

What platform is it for?

That interpreter is too limited to be useful, I think. If you want to try your hand at making 2600 games in a much better dialect of Basic, give http://bataribasic.com/ a look.

Do you still have it? If so, do share. I love looking at old prototypes and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Nope. Everything I had was on ratty floppies that died through my many adventures in Lose Everything You Own. I had SOME of my stuff up on my old Geocities page, and it would still be there if Yahoo weren't faggots.

Predominately for winblows but you can compile in linux, not for consoles per se, sorry for off topic.
