>the GBA's 3D capabilities
It doesn't actually have any, it just has a more-advanced-than-SNES ability to stretch and skew 2D images. All of this is done via the system's 2D shape transforms and using PSX-style affine texture skewing in lieu of more expensive texture perspective calcs. There's no natural depth or space function, it all has to be custom-programmed and done on CPU with correct math by the dev in a lightweight enough way to work.

Most 3D on the GBA is done using software rendering. The reason you see more 3D graphics on the GBA is because its CPU runs circles around the one in the SNES.

I think they should have made an original GBA Resident Evil series, followed by a NDS-PSP game with better graphics. It would take until the 3DS until we got a hand-held RE game. No ports, because ports will always be compared to the originals, and no way the GBA could do the original the same.

That's interesting, I was surprised and thought 3D games would at least use hardware acceleration to draw affine sprites but I tried Smashing Drive just to check and it does indeed seem to be doing everything in software using the bitmap mode. Why was this the case?

Applying affine transformations to sprites can only get you so far. You can do orthographic projections that way, but perspective projections aren't possible (remembering that affine transformations must preserve parallel lines). Most 3D games use a perspective projection, so software rendering is the only way to go in those cases.

>> No.7805257

>>7801173
What you said is true, but I can't help but sperge about that pic. While awesome for GBA games, I fucking hate how poorly utilized and these functions were for actual GC games.. The fact that to play something like 4SA or Cruystal Chronicles properly, you needed a fuckton of GBAs, the cables (which no one had) and other shit pretty much ruined them. Both games should have been completely playable by just popping in more GC comntrollers for your buddies.

Your image is amazing though because it's showing a way to get more out of a GBA game. When GC games forced use of a cable though, it was dogshit. Nintendo always seems to ruin good ideas, like the e-reader.

>> No.7805260

>>7805226
IIRC mode 7 affine transformations achieve perspective projection by updating the affine transformation matrix on hblank intervals. I guess that's only practical for one background layer rather than a bunch of polygons though.

The truth is that all 3D games simply use sophisticated texture scaling techniques. SNES got us started with mode 7; later systems carried on with mode 8, 9,... and we're up to mode 26 now for modern PC games, with mode 27 coming out in early 2022 (not retro I know sorry).

That's why if you go close up to object even in a modern 3D game you can clip through and see the "inside" of a supposedly-3D model. It's just a rotated bitmap.

What an awful article.

>it is capable of rendering texture-mapped, polygonal 3D graphics. It was a 32-bit console after all; and produced far better looking 3D graphics than the supposedly 64-bit Atari Jaguar or the Sega 32X
What? 3D on the GBA is a slideshow and trails far behind either of those systems with their dedicated 3D hardware. It's no contest.

>the GBA’s 3D capabilities were still rudimentary and prone to slowdown, short-draw distances and blurry visuals
Blurry? It's sharp and pixelated as fuck. That's anything but blurry.

>Crazy Taxi made use of the Graphic State engine to attempt to squeeze a fully polygonal, texture mapped level into a GBA cartridge. It’s an interesting attempt technologically, fogging isn’t too bad
Okay. Now I'm convinced the writer is either trolling or just blind. There is no fog you stupid motherfucker. Dumb piece of shit.

I wonder if they just thought LCD ghosting on original GBA was "blurry". I can *almost* see why a layman would think that of a game where every pixel on the screen changes with movement like a 3D scene would following a car. Fog though, would have been too impressive if anything.
