Gotta say this was pretty bad compared to the SNES and Genesis

It had a buttload of games. Nearly as many as the N64 in the US. It just didn't have any good ones. Even the N64 had a few.

Return Fire is the best 2 player split screen experience on any console in the 90's. Also, Twisted was a shitload of fun with friends.
It was the only console that played American Laser Games, and they performed better than the arcade versions. Too bad the light gun was expensive af, and there are no working ones out there.
It had the best versions of some games of its time: Samurai Showdown, Street Fighter II Turbo, Night Trap, The Daedalus Encounter.
The visualizer for music CD's was actually pretty dam impressive for its time.
It was region free.
Motorized disc tray is comfy.
My biggest gripe, besides lack of good games, was loading times.

Sounds like the PS3 of the 90's.

Like the PS5 and Series X lmao.

I like those new consoles but man is that hilarious.

It pretty much was. Zoomers have it good these days.

Back then other then this was bleeding edge. Sure FMV games weren't the best but at the time compared to 16bit stuff it was pretty kino. I mean Demolition Man on the 3DO vs the 16bit versions was night and day.

But it lost to the PS because of its price, poor quality control with games and a saturated console market.

For real? I’ll have to check out some videos of it. Own the game for the SNES and the original GameBoy and weirdly enough the GB one is a proper port with fun gameplay, whereas the SNES one is slooooow as fuck, making it nearly unplayable.

Games are expensive to make, be patient. It may cost $100 million per game. The studios have to spend that much otherwise their staff will have nothing to do.

I have to correct myself: It's probably the best console to play it on besides an actual NEO GEO, which cost fortune. But yeah, it was really good on the 3DO.

Return Fire was shitloads of fun, and had an excellent soundtrack of symphonic war music. For its time, it was amazing.
And yes, 3DO had among the best performance in fighting games. You could even get a six button controller for it.

It's weird to think that the 3DO actually had a good amount of NTSC-J support, even more than NA, but it came out at that time where it was dominated by pure 90s American FMV game cheese so I never knew until I actually looked into it.

True. Still not the best 2 player split screen experience on any console in the 90's
>And yes, 3DO had among the best performance in fighting games.
Compared to the jaguar, cdi or cd32? Yes
Compared to the neo geo? No
>You could even get a six button controller for it.
Yes

Street Fighter II Turbo doesn’t exist on the 3DO. That was Super Street Fighter II Turbo

I suppose I was being hyperbolic about Return Fire. It's just such an overlooked game.
I did mention in >>7798440 that 3DO was the best way to play Samurai Showdown short of owning a NEO GEO, which was crazy expensive.

That game was Janky as hell, but so fun. I remember it had a code you entered at the title screen for extra blood. The screen would get covered in gobs of blood when you did it right.

It was closer to $700, or about 1300 in today's worthless money. These things were shilled like nothing I've ever seen back then too. Every magazine, even mainstream stuff like Time and Newsweek, was bending over backwards to suck its dick. Then a few years later after it crashed and burned the hype machine started up again, this time hailing the M2 as a technical marvel and the savior of gaming, based on nothing except a rendering of a sailboat and a dinosaur.

>> No.7800007

>>7799883
Couldn't you just play those on the Genesis?

That fucking dinosaur. I still remember seeing that fucking dinosaur in Gamepro, along with Foes Of Ali renders.
I love my 3DO, and still have good memories attached to it. It's shame that they were dishonest about its capabilities from the very start. The first demonstrations at expos was just renders on a an Apple PowerPC. But, I guess that's what everyone does today, so really they were just ahead of their time.

$100mil? Seriously? How much did Earthworm Jim cost to make? Or Space Harrier or Battletoads? The cost of these modern games seems crazy expensive.

>> No.7800350

The idea was to appeal to the more wealthier old person which is why they had a lot of movie games and simpler to play games. Think of the typical 40 year old at the time, no way are they going to buy a 16 bit console for themselves. The big issues was targeting people way too old so when the ps1 came out it more targeted to the 16 to 24 or so age group. I think a lot of companies didn't understand that graphics by themselves won't make a game popular. But 2 generations of 2d graphics, I can see why people wanted to try something different.

>>7800047
I think Earthworm Jim was $700k according to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOnUITJqRQQ..

Bubsy was something like 8 people and took a year so 8 wages for a year.
