Technically it was Super Mario Bros. 2, and the art style was still being used as far as the Super Mario Advance series. But it started to die with the 3D rendered artwork made for N64 games, which I still like.

you can see this clearly in the mario maker stage for smash bros which changes through the eras as you fight.

first your platform is a construction beam like the donkey kong arcade. these are the balance bridges from smb1. then they become wooden patterened for smb3 aestetics. for smbw they turn into checkerboard which is honestly already a little soulless. but the coo da grace is when it switches to nsmbu and everything is flat shit.
