>The n64 port of resident evil 2 is amazing.

It's amazing that it exists, I guess, but it's not an amazing version to play. It has missing content, looks like shit with its cropped JPEG backgrounds, and it's glitchy.

>Considering they had to fit a cd game onto a much smaller cart.

The only thing really amazing are the FMVs, and they are cropped, are in smaller resolution have, worse framerate, and more important several bits of FMVs were cut like seeing Leon/Claire on the heliport, the Claire version of the talk with Annette, or some of the segments which are supposed to only play in the Leon A ending. They also got rid of the alternate ending credits with the rocking tune that is supposed to play the end of the B scenarios, instead re-using the A scenario ones.

It's a butchered version. They cut through with an axe to make it fit on the cartridge, and what did make it in there is in worse quality. But people be like "wow this is amazing!", and I bet half of those never even played that version.

yeah. i was just specifically going for games with the Resident Evil/fixed camera etc formula. Illbleed's great but i think strays a bit too far from the RE formula, if i was just doing a general survival horror retro list, it'd be a lot longer (and i just started to reach the text limit on the post as is)

Great list anon; it can be hard tracking down all the survival horror games from these eras. I've tapped out a lot of the ps1 library sadly (love me galerians tho) but at least I have Fatal Frame 2 and 3 to discover since I've never played them. I'll eventually need to claw Rule of Rose away from my brother, if he hasn't sold that for mad cash yet.

You have a non horror category but still put stuff like Dino Crisis 2 in "RE formula".

Well, whatever. You may want to try Deep Freeze if you like "tank control action games" of the sorts. I couldn't get past stage 2 myself even when playing on easy, I don't know if i'm playing wrong or if it's the game, but it seemed pretty good otherwise.

Anyway I love Vampire Hunter D myself. Soul of the Samurai is also pretty decent. I need to try Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn /Chase The Express one of these days, I've been wanting to try it for more than a decade now.

I sold my PAL UK copy 200 bucks a few months back, no regrets the game sucks, but since then it's like everyone and their mother realized they had the game collecting dust in their attics because new copies keep popping up everywhere. But no only there are more copies on sale, but they all "ask" ridiculous prices like 1000+ bucks for it, it makes no sense.

thanks, i like being able to add to it any time i repost it, i had no idea about stuff like Team Innocent, Enigma or the Scooby Doo N64 game until i started compiling the list. don't think it goes for quite as much of Rule of Rose but i also need to dig out the physical copy of Haunting Ground me or my brother has around somewhere as well

>>7790431
i forgot about Deep Freeze, i always mix that up with Covert Ops thinking "Deep Freeze" is it's second name instead of Chase the Express, thanks for the reminder.

I get where they're coming from but if you give the game a real chance it's actually pretty good. I think the main issues is that people go in guns blazing trying to play this like Onimusha or Devil May Cry, but Vampire Hunter D is all about counter attacks. Before attacking you need to dodge to create an opening, otherwise you're gonna get fucked, and if you insist in this path that obviously doesn't work, the game will feel clunky to you.

But overall gameplay is fine, although things tend to get messy when there are many enemies at once, atmosphere is great, and I love the voice acting. There are issues like some camera angles aren't great and a lot of them make the characters look like ants, and the symmetry of the castle isn't always a good thing.

It was terrifying. Now it's hillarious :(

>> No.7793162

>>7793151
The castle being so symmetrical reeks of laziness to me. It's so uninteresting to explore once you realize it. The combat really isn't great either. I've beaten the game a few times and I understand the mechanics well, I don't have a difficult time making it through the game, but it's still clunky. I don't find the game difficult, just not very good. Fixed camera angle, tank control third person combat just doesn't feel very good to play, and the platforming sections, while perfectly doable, feel even worse. I appreciate the lock on system for what it is, I like making use of Left Hand's different powers, and there's a certain atmosphere to the castle, but it's a mostly forgettable experience with braindead puzzle solving that doesn't follow its source material very well at all. It feels like a quick and dirty development job and that's likely what it was. I understand your enjoyment of it, like I said I enjoyed it enough to play through it more than once, mostly because I really like Vampire Hunter D, but I can recognize it isn't very good.

>> No.7793182

>>7793162
The thing is, the vast majority of games with tank controls and pre-rendered backgrounds are just really bad. Outside of the obvious RE/Dino Crisis/etc, they're all full of issues. Evil Dead, Marthian Gothic, Countdown Vampires, The Crow, et etc they're all terrible one way or the other. Even the good ones like AITD A New Nightmare or Deep Fear or full of issues.
I don't know what it is about the genre that made it hard to devs to make decent games, or maybe they all suffered from too short dev time because everyone wanted to jump on the bandwagon of this new genre that sold millions as quickly as possible.

Point is VHD is no exception, it's also full of issues but compared to the ones I mentionned, it's one of the ones that I enjoyed the most. Soul of the Samurai has better gameplay for sure and is probably one of the better ones, very underrated considering it predates Onimusha, but ironically it had less soul.

They are but the door animations are not necessary. They load a first batch of stuff before the door animation starts, a second batch as it opens, and the final batch as the animation ends. They could have done all that with a simple black screen like other games did. My point being, the actual loading time is much, much shorter than the door animations, even on PSX.

> zombies can knock down that one door on the second floor and you can move between rooms normally

That's possible as long as both rooms are pretty small and don't have many camera angles, or different enemy types or enemies at all in them.

I didn't mind it but in REmake they're way too slow. And in RE0 the rooms are super small + you have two characters so all you do is see door. Thank god for fastforward in emulators, I have that bound to select whenever I play now.

I am sure Rule of Rose sucks (my brother didn't like it and never beat it) but I have a higher tolerance for finishing jank-ass Resi clones/survival horror games than him so I thought I might at least enjoy the story. He's happy because he bought the game for $20.00 a few years ago from an unsuspecting store and wants to eventually cash out.

I do have a backlog of horror though... Like the aforementioned Fatal Frame 2 and am currently working through RE Code Veronica.

Not really horror but since it's been mentionned itt... i've been replaying Onimusha. The great thing about this game is that with the crits system, you can replay the game 30 times and there is always room for improvement.

if anyone knows how to turn off interlacing in this game with PCSX2 let me know... also damn some of the camera angles suck
