What are some GOOD Japan only games that are only in kana? I know most NES/GB and prior are for technical limitations. Any "must play" games?

(deleted and reposted because my OP wasn't as clear as it should be)

Any game aimed at kids. Even japanese children aren't good at kanji.

Yeah, but what's a GOOD game that fits that?

Going on a tangent, man, i suck at kana-only stuff. I can read the kanas pretty damn fast, but i went through the Heisig's Kanji book and my actual vocabulary is piss, so i have an easier time just identifying the kanji to get a rough meaning. When it's kana-only, or even kana-only parts of stuff that otherwise has kanji, i get incredibly fucking lost.

how about Lagrange Point on NES?
It's your average DQ clone, but dat 16-bit music on 8-bit system man.

I'd like to know some too.

I actually like translating things, but fucking Kanji, man.

Fucking Kanji.

Same here. I'm trying to learn some to play through my new Wonderswan collection, and it's a pain in the ass when kanji come up anywhere, forget that I still haven't got hiragana or katakana down yet.

Hero Senki. If you are into mecha stuff. It is your standard jRPG, but with Gundams, Kamen Riders and Ultramen. Tons f fun if you are a bit familliar with the characters.

Nice to see another Medabots fan. I actually bought 1 for $10 boxed on ebay. I really wanna get into it, but it's a typical JRPG where it tells you where to go, and doesn't hold your hand. I am so fucking lost. On the plus side it has a wicked cool Super GameBoy border.

Yeah, I find Kana only to be harder than Kanji. My vocabulary is getting good though so I don't have to worry about it anyway.
OP I'd personally recommend reading easy manga but that's not the point of the thread.

Anyway, older Final Fantasy games and I think Dragon Quest too. Earthbound doesn't have a lot of Kanji and most of it is in Kana. Paper Mario on the n64 uses some Kanji but again, they aren't really hard, you could probably learn them while playing the game with little to no effort.

Understanding Kanji Characters by their Ancestral Forms
by Ping-gam Go

buy it, read it, learn all the examples.

easy as that.

then
buy "Essential Kanji" by O'neill and start studying the examples religiously. The real benefit of this book is the compounding it teaches you.

Kanji aren't hard, but knowing how to study them takes a bit of work. Buying an old copy of Heian's Dictionary of Japanese Culture and using all the crazy shit in their as vocab practice is probably the next step.

Seriously, don't waste time learning words. You pick them up fast as shit while practicing your kanji. A couple of good grammar books would serve you better.

I disagree with your methods but this isn't the place to open up a debate on it, I suppose.
Also, Tae Kim and genki are fantastic for grammar.

It's more to getting hiragana reading more reflexive than vocab actually. Pixiv tags have made katakana second nature for standard computer fonts (though more stylized logos take effort).

imo practicing the kanji and learning to compound them teaches you an assload of words.

a decent grammar book will have lots of basic nouns and probably a couple of good verb charts in the back filling in the rest.

but i'mma say yes, not everybody learns the same.
