ill do ya one better and recommend super zero mission SM romhack instead
really excellent hack, and is quite difficult compared to any of the vanilla games, without going over the top into total romhack stupidity

They do, if they're made correctly. You can even alter Chinese shit with a dremel&file to make it safe. People should take an electrical engineering course, if you learn how pcb works and how connectors interact with eachother, you'd be saving yourself a shitton of money in the longrun.

considering how they C&Dd the AM2R guy practically to death over making a romhack based on the same source material, its not likely for a while
no one wants to piss on the third rail
it was a decent game, but i honestly enjoyed AM2R more even tho im not particularly fond of the zeromission/fusion physics/controls

also, the reason SM has so many hacks in the first place is the wealth of resources to learn from, and tools available to build stuff with
for what youre asking to happen, it will take many years of fans working at taking that game, and the 3DS architecture itself, apart

I really missed the acceleration part in the movement. Its one of the reasons imho why quake for examples feels so much smoother than unreal tournament.

diff goy, but SM has a very specific feel to it due to how many frames it takes to get going, stop (unless of course you stop while holding angle up/down), turn around etc etc
once you get used to it after playing a bunch of SM, it can make other games with different physics feel much more stiff

same reason i tend not to favor the gba games
they look fine, but the feel is just a little off
purely preference of course, but its there

>> No.7785624

I bought one and hardly touch it.
I just emulate. It's convenient.

>> No.7785645

>>7785597
Interesting. I played through most of SM (I don't know where I was last, maybe close to Ridley fight) and one thing I specifically disliked was the movement and play control. Samus feels very stiff to me in that game, because of the exact things you pointed to as feeling fluid (startup on movement, etc.). I struggle, in fact, to understand how making movement actions take longer to do would make something more fluid, as opposed to less fluid.

>> No.7785808

>>7785645
yea like i said its mostly preference and what you grew up playing
fluid might not be the right word
having momentum tends to make things feel more natural tho imo

for a non metroid ex, and one i hear often, try playing the original super mario on nes, then playing super mario land on gb back to back
smb has momentum. takes a while to get to top speed/to stop etc
whereas sml has none of that
as soon as you stop holding the d-pad, mario stops on a dime
a lot of early, more crude platformers had this issue, and to many it feels extremely unnatural

back to metroid
its subtle shit, and were talking like a difference of a few frames in a 60fps game so maybe a couple dozen milliseconds, but if youve played it a lot, its definitely noticeable

>> No.7785862

>>7785808
That makes more sense then. I wouldn't say "fluid" but you definitely get used to the "weight" of the character. Mario in SMB is totally different than the later Marios, where they wanted to facilitate easier control. For me, SMB is good as well, and has a satisfying feeling when you are good enough to move Mario as if he is just as fluid as in the later games (where they hand it to you without so much as a single demand!)

As you say then, it is ultimately personal taste. For me, SM movement has too much delay to be enjoyable. I like Samus Returns as it makes for a very action-oriented and fluid game design.

I actually would really love to see that same game modified and released (as new titles, not just a reskin) with a different franchise than metroid, as I feel like the style of game and play control is not quite right for Metroid overall (the feeling was too much like that of an overtly action-focused game, where to me Metroid should be overtly exploration-focused) but I still really loved the action gameplay. If it were the basis of, say, a Turrican clone, or even just something that was similar but wasn't called Metroid, then they could fully explore a new framework of expectations for the players, and probably do more that was unhindered by the preexisting notions of what fans expect from a metroid game (my vote would be to ditch having so many obvious "use this beam" doors).

Plus, they could do more than one game in a blue moon, since Nintendo wouldn't be controlling the release cycle. I don't expect future games like this one though, which is why I ask instead for romhacks.

>He didn't get it when it was new
Sucks to be you, OP

>> No.7785902

wow, this game is super overpriced. I bought it new and beat it a few times, but never thought it was that special. GBA shit is kind of absurd as I look at it more. Too bad I sold it off a few years ago instead of waiting.

you should maybe try some of the improvement hacks for SM
theres a lot of them that make the physics more snappy as well as speed up door transitions, change HUD/pause screen, change the ammo system, let you shinespark much quicker, let you bomb jump easier etc etc
just go to metroidconstruction.com and search for SM hacks and check off the "improvements" box, then read the various user reviews
patching it is ez af, just make sure you have an unheadered rom

or if youre feeling really ballsy, try the romhack "ancient chozo". pretty easy by romhack standards imo, and its WAY faster in terms of its feel, as its based on the improvement hack "project base" iirc. other than that, its something of a re-imagining of the original SM and relatively close to the original map.
and graphically its absolutely gorgeous

new turrican sounds fucking great tho
GL with nu-tendo ever giving you what you want tho. they havent been very kind recently to those whove taken their own time to re-build/fix their old games, even with no profit involved
like i said, give it a few years and check back. 3DS is a much more complicated system than SNES, and we know MUCh less about that games engine as the code hasnt been reverse-engineered like with SM. nor does it have as many nerds whove been tearing it apart constantly for decades

speaking of de-comp, im excited to see what the OoT de-comp will bring in terms of romhacks

I'd really like to see OoT get an update visually, using the Ocarina of Time 3D models as a base, but also touching up the game to restore the various elements taken away for the 3D release (specifically, things they dropped in later N64 carts, like the red blood, the original fire temple music, and the original block/mirror shield imagery, but also things like the bloody textures surrounding the torture implements on Bottom of the Well/Shadow Temple).

I am not currently in a "metroid mood" but your comments are interesting. I've filed them away for later, in a long, long list of "maybes" to play at some point. Cheers for sharing them with me.

Samus Returns makes me wonder how much of the game was Nintendo and how much of it was MercurySteam. The last MercurySteam game I played was Castlevania Mirror of Fate on 3DS, and I was appalled by how they treated the CV series, but perhaps that was Konami, or perhaps more so it was my framework of expectations being utterly trampled on by the game's design and also its tone.

Maybe Nintendo straightened them out on making a great game, and maybe it was more Konami was a negative influence on the game. We will probably never know unless we get interviews with MercurySteam heads regarding the working relationships they had with each company.

Needless to say though, if it was MercurySteam/Nintendo quality of relations that produced Samus Returns, then I will be very sad that they will likely never work again. I'd love to see that seemingly harmonious pairing work again on a new game, even a new property, so that they could expand beyond the framework expected of a metroid game, and do things that were more in tune with a full-focused action platforming shooter.

I am still getting amazed about Zero Mission. It was the first Metroid I've ever played and I was blown away by the pixelart quality and general amount of polish and details it received for a freaking 160p handheld screen. It is one of the best games overall. It is a pity so little hacks are done for it comparing with Super Metroid, no projects with the scope and quality of Vitality or Eris SM hacks.

Yep, AM2R is a standalone game. I was wondering why the dev didn't go with Super Metroud hack fir AM2R itself, but then realized, that you cannot really do bosses this way. Some SM hacks has astounding visuals and very different mechanics. But bosses suck (the same with minor visual changes) in all SM hacks.

There were two absolute shit parts in this game. There was one point near the beginning where I needed an upgrade and scoured the map for it. Couldn't figure out any new areas or where to go so I ended up doing an infinite bomb jump in an area with collapsing floors and had to do it diagonally to get to the top left of the room. Took me 20 minutes but I did it and got a bunch of upgrades and it was smooth sailing. Then I got stuck in the area with Metroids floating around and during a cutscene type section you get latched onto and die in 10 seconds. I thought it was telling me I couldn't go through there so I spent another hour or two just exploring the entire map. Got fed up and looked at a guide. You have to get latched onto and then shoot and bomb your way through the glass to the left and even after knowing this it took me 5 tries because I kept dying as I was a couple frames away from the edge of the screen. Really frustrating but other than those two parts I had so much fun.
