Hi /vr/ I'm wondering if you can help a nigga out. /v/ is no help and has become shit so i'm making a thread here.

This thread is for old games like Metal Slug, gunstar, and contra. I'd cal them shoot-em-ups but I'm not talking about the space scrollers. Is Platform shooters a term?

anyways I don't know any games like this besides what I already mentioned so I'm looking for new suggestions. I love the idea of many different weapon types allowing for creativity and different playthrough, some games even make it better with combining weapons.

I don't really play these games (although I'm getting into Contra: Hard Corps recently) but when I went back to Alien Solider I realized it's one! May be worth a go

Is Duke Nukem 2 acceptable as an answer to this

Guerrilla War has overhead view but has some vague similarities with Metal Slug, after all it is from SNK.

> tfw i beat Contra this week on a single continue and no Konami Code
Felt so good, but it really isn't all that hard. Two friends of mine did a one-life-clear on it, but i'm not even sure they're human.

Did you play Gunstar Super Heros for GBA?

Get spread and blast through, only problem are 2-3 jumps in the factory and hangar level, rest is easy if you know the game a bit.

Thoughts on Contra legacy of war? Never played it, picked it up with other random games from goodwill for $6.

Contra is fun but the gameplay is kinda stale if you really look at it. The shot types are great but the enemy and level design doesn't take full advantage of it. Most of the weapons you can just mash without a care in the world and they have similar uses. I guess back then that's all they could do back on the NES so I'm not blaming them or anything.

A game like Jak 3 does it great. Barely retro but I want to mention it because it has so many weapons for many different situations. Its more complex due to being 3D and newer but the weapons in that game stand out and more than "spread" "laser" "machine gun"

First Contra is actually easiest Contra, Super C is next.

TURRICAN series- Sort of a Metroid/Contra mix in some entries, more straight forward sidescroller in others

RENDERING RANGER - Japan only SNES game made by the Turrican guy. Throws in some shmup in the mix

Gunlord - new-ish idy release for the Dreamcast a love letter to Turrican

I don't know if Jackal qualifies as run'n'gun since it's top down instead of side scrolling, but it doesn't matter, the game is excellent. It plays just like the top down levels of Super C, except you're in a jeep and you upgrade the guns and grenades. It's pretty short and easy, but definitely worth playing.

Super C is easier IMO, but we all know that difficulty is personal thing.

The field of vision in Duke 2 is plain awkward. It's next to impossible to react in time to any enemies unless you move by taking single steps. It doesn't help much in navigating the relatively large levels, either.

I got it off ebay a few years ago for $5. It's... not great, but not terrible, but probably the worst Contra. The control is my biggest problem, especially in the jungle level where you have to jump on and off a raft (IIRC). It uses a lot of bosses from Hard Corps, and I swear the river boss is pure random if you dodge or not. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I never figured out what exactly you have to do. I never beat the game. I got stuck at some boss where you're falling down an infinite depth hole and he just destroyed me. Maybe someday I'll put in the time to beat it, but it just wasn't as fun as the others. For $6 though it's not a bad buy. A weekend rental easily costs more, and I got a couple weeks out of it before I quit.
