What are the chances we'll ever get to see any of the Resident Evil betas? Almost every game in the series had some form of canceled prototype and all of them seem interesting

Also, something to keep in mind is that CD protos are generally more plentiful - cheap to burn, easy to distribute, no real need to have them returned. So there is a better chance of having multiple instances of said CD protos floating around among journalists, devs, collectors, etc. Carts, on the other hand, were more expensive and more reusable, so they tended to be overwritten, and a better chance that a company would want them returned so they could be reused. Obviously many cart protos are out there and many have made it into collectors hands, but I'd wager the odds are a bit less of any particular build/game turning up, especially if there isn't hard evidence that the build were ever sent out to the press.

Translation for those interested:
>Resident Evil Zero
>There is no end to the horror! Just after Capcom introduced you to the Resident Evil franchise, a continuation specifically made for the Nintendo 64 is scheduled for this year. We have investigated Resident Evil Zero for you.
>The 3D action adventure Resident Evil Zero, which is expected to release in Japan this summer already, is primarily set within the narrow wagons of a derailed train. The majority of the passengers is infected with Umbrella Corporation's T-Virus and has mutated into drooling zombies. You start the adventure in the role of special agent Rebecca Chambers but over the course of the game you'll also encounter the burly military officer Billy Cohen. You can switch between these two characters at certain points: While the petite Rebecca is well-versed in the usage of herbs and keys, Billy is best suited for situations when the hungry undead are scratching at the next door and packs of hellhounds prepare to jump at your throat. Apart from this back and forth, the item management has also been redesigned: Now you can deposit items at any place. But be careful: Much of the rendered scenery is buried under trash and rubble. Unless you perfectly memorize where you've left additional ammo, you'll be in dire straits!

This game looked so fucking good. I still like RE4 as we have it, but does anyone feel a bit of sadness at the lost potential of this game? I love the idea of a fixed camera with over the shoulder aiming. I think it could be argued that it seemed a bit strange with the dolls and ghosts that it was a bit off from a Resident Evil game, but the atmosphere looked great to me and like an interesting departure. I get they wanted to mix things up. This could have been the ultimate culmination of survival horror, maybe I'm being way too optimistic, but I can't help but feel a bit sad and wonder.

As good as RE4 was, it undeniably took the series in a different stylistic direction. The closest thing we have to the originally-envisioned "gothic horror RE4" is the first DMC.

That's pretty true honestly, and DMC1 even gives some pretty great atmospheric vibes. I do like DMC3 and 4, but I think it has to be admitted that once again a series with interesting potential was taken in a completely different direction. That being said at least we actually have DMC1 released.

There is a video on youtube of the devs playing the N64 version of RE0, at one point before the train starts, they enter a very small wagon and you can see zombies roaming outdoor through the window.

I thought that was a great touch. In the final game it's kinda stupid like she just enters the train and won't leave.

Also, all we ever saw is the train segment of that version, but there must have been a lot more made before the switch to GCN. There is a background of the institute showing on the gore warning at the start of that version at least, plus those concept art >>7772331 >>7772309

Plus, they did start making FMVs for the N64, even if they were made in-house it's not something you do early on. I'm confident there was a lot more to this version than we've ever been shown.

Gotta wonder what happened for the game to remain in dev hell for so long though. Did they have a poor team, poor planning, both? It looks like at first, they based the game on RE2 N64 too so they had a LOT of important programming work cut out for them. They had the engine. Then, the final version probably benifitted from REmake as well.

Perhaps the game remained in dev hell so long that, once dev of REmake started, they just had no other choice than to switch to GCN because it would pale in comparison.

I'd settle for the RE1 protos used by Gamefan, the ones in which item boxes do not break the fourth wall and in which they apparently have a translated version of the Trevor Files.

Had RE0 been released on Nintendo 64 in 2000 (which was the original plan, before the GameCube and REmake released) , I genuinely believe it would have sold more units than the final game did on GameCube.

Note only because more people had a Nintendo 64 in 2000 (about 30 millions) than any GameCube ever sold (21 millions), but more importantly in 2000 survival horror was at its prime. Silent Hill, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 3 had all released in 1999. There were also successful derivatives like Parasite Eve II.

However, by the time the GameCube came out, players and reviewers alike were starting to get sick of the AITD/RE style of survival horror, saying pre-rendered backgrounds and tank controls are a thing of the past.

The HD Remaster also outsold the original RE0 on GC almost 2 to 1, although that doesn't include sales data from the Wii version, it pretty much confirms the game came out at the wrong time and on the wrong platform.
I'm sure on N64 RE0 could have sold around 2 million copies.

There's some interviews with the developers on youtube that were done to promote the HD re-release where they talk about how everyone thought Billy was bland and he couldn't have much personality in his outfit because he's a prisoner. That's impossible. We know development started at least in 1999, and they couldn't have gotten a GameCube devkit before 2001. We know they had started on voice acting and FMVs which aren't things you deal with when the game is 15% done.

Thinking about the timeline made me realize something....I've been assuming RE0 was based on RE2 N64, benifitted from it, but the contrary could be true also.

If you're going off by the timeline (2 years) just remember that Resident Evil was getting a lot of the development shifted around due to Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Code Veronica being in production all at the same time causing Capcom to overexpand its capacity and resources in the Resident Evil franchise.

But I guess if voice acting and FMVs were indeed in production at that point, then it is most likely that the game was far more advanced than 10-15%.
