Hey guys

I read about many ways to reverse the yellowing of old consoles (steel wool, oxy + H2O2). Which way is most effective?

I've heard good stuff about Retrobright.

>> No.776870

I used OxyClean on a monitor I bought and was shocked at how much yellow it removed. I don't know if it will be as effective on sun yellowing as it probably is on smoke yellowing though. I imagine the steel wool part of what you heard is to remove any waterproof surface gunk to let the OxyClean soak in as deep into the plastic as possible.

>> No.778795

Steel wool is an abrasive. Do not use it unless you absolutely need to remove something crusted or caked on that won't come off with soap or isopropyl alcohol.

Abrasives are also ineffective against chemical yellowing, like from the oxidation of bromine from flame-retardant additives in plastic.

Retr0brite is magical stuff. It makes the bromine yellowing and your flesh; handle carefully disappear.

The hardest part is obtaining H2O2 of sufficient concentration. The 3% antiseptic wash you can get at the drug store simply isn't strong enough.

shiggyd diggy doo wop

Every time I see a yellowed SNES, I get urges to go brush my teeth.

Seems to work fine here:

Keep in mind OP, much like RetroBrite, steel wool will rip your hands apart. I work for a construction company and it made my hands bleed. Proceed with caution

Am I the only one who doesn't mind the yellowing? I just consider it aged or even battle scarred. Plus it doesn't affect the internal components does it?

Feel free to de-yellow it if you want, I just find it funny.

Eh, I don't know. I just like my things to look uniform, and yellowing happens in different places on my consoles. I'd rather have it completely yellow or completely gray, you know what I mean?

My SNES, which has been in my possession since December 1991. I've thought about cleaning it before, but it still works great and i don't want to fuck with it unless there is no chance that i will further damage the plastic.

I don't know why the corners are chipped. I've never dropped this thing even once.

It's such a shade of yellow that just seems dirty to me, even though it's not from dirt. If it were bright yellow I wouldn't mind, but the specific shade makes me uneasy.

Like I said, ineffective. Also highly destructive.

I have no qualms about you guys not liking it. I'm biased in that only half of my console has turned and I actually think it looks somewhat neat to be honest.

Also this is an old photo. My setup is way better now.

Bromine browning is a pretty nasty look. It's not a distinguished aging like the patina on an old coin or tool.

On top of that it's rarely uniform over the whole console because different parts usually come from different batches of plastic.

Just go to Best Buy and get a new one.

I dont mind dude. If it works fine just let it be. It's like the greying of hair. You can dye it to look young but everyone knows you are old and trying to hard.

It looks brighter in the pics. Tucked away with all my other systems it looks fine & is barley noticeable. All my other systems are black anyways.

Just paint your SNES the appropriate color.

Not all of that is normal yellowing. You've got some actual grime on there.

Take it apart and clean it. You may as well retrobrite it while you're at it.
