Retro rhythm games thread

>> No.7762820

Just played DDR Disney Mix on PS1 with my lil bro. It has a decent but small list of songs and some good exclusive songs like the Ducking Hardcore Mix. My only gripe is we don't have a CRT so the input lag is a bit wonky.

Hard Mode shark chase for me. I need someone else to help me by sharing a controller and pushing Triangle and Circle for me while I push Square and Cross.

never owned a controller and never had an arcade near me with one so I've only played it a handful of times but I really do just love the old pop'n artwork

>> No.7765506

>>7762931
I've played one of these before on the PS2 at a friend's house and it was pretty enjoyable. Were any installments ever released abroad?

>> No.7766857

>>7765506
No. The only Bemani series that got any real love for console ports outside of japan was DDR. Back then I was salty about it but in retrospect, IIDX and Pop'n are games that 95% of American gamers are too retarded to appreciate let alone git gud at so it would have been pointless to promote here. IIDX had more edge and weeb appeal to try to market the one version they put out here, pop'n is a total non starter. Too hard, no anime mvs, too poppy, etc.

>> No.7768183

>>7766857
Pop'n seems like it'd be a legal nightmare to release in the US with all the anime songs it uses.

>> No.7768293

>>7762931
I hate what Bemani did to the Pop'n series in the last 8 years or so. The new art styles are so bland and I don't understand why they removed genre names.
Played the hell out of 8 at a small asian arcade and had 13 on my PS2 with a controller I got off PlayAsia. Good times.

I remember IIDX getting one single western release which was completely fine, though I remember X-Play giving it an absolutely scathing and mean review for no real reason. They called it a Guitar Hero clone of all things.

Simple as hell and the high score moves are pretty much cheat codes but it's sure fun.

Bought an L-tek pad, penny-modded it and stuck a chair mat for carpets to the bottom. One of the best gaming and exercise investments I've made.

To be fair you might be having trouble because you need a better monitor, and you need to set the audio plugin to PortAudio + WD-KMS + lowest latency. Lag's probably fucking with you a fair bit.

i bet most of that crap is owned by a handful of japanese media companies (FujiTV etc) though, it's probably not as much of a nightmare as it sounds. whether it'd be worth it is a different question of course

As you can see OP, not a lot of people care about rhythm games. It's obscure hipster shit and you know it retard ;)

the thing is, I own almost every jap bemani game released, and all the controllers, for both ps1 and ps2. I live near a Round 1 arcade. I am 30 years old, and I can count the number of people I've met who actually know about these games(ddr doesn't fucking count) on one hand. Sure, I know people online via forums, but that's totally different.

i know about parapara, beatmania, guitar freaks, sound voltex, pop'n music and so on. I have a huge amount of DDR games in my game collection, I even played and 100%'d more obscure modern rhythm games like DJ Hero and Amplitude. The reason I haven't played more of those games is because arcades are dead and these controllers aren't worth the money. You're not unique you triple faggot.

OP here, at 20+ replies I'm already more than happy with the response the thread has gotten, especially with a PPP pic of all things. Chill out anon, it's not that serious

The issue wouldn't be the Japanese media companies but all the studios they're licensed to in America they'd have to deal with. That's why SRW only got the OG games released here.

Sorry that your life sucks so bad that you've ended up projecting on /vr/. Either enjoy the games without a social reward or don't.

>>7770098
No, but I'd like to see Konami revive Pop'n Stage.

The unfortunate thing about rhythm games is that if they're worth taking seriously, they have a modern iteration that far exceeds the retro editions of those games. Outside of the few examples that have been posted, I can't think of anything that'd be worth loading up on a console, over going to an arcade. Maybe DJMax, if you're in the crowd that accepts PSP as being retro.

I was honestly just shitposting lol. OP and I were debating if rhythm games were hipster shit or not in a different /vr/ thread, and I was just playing on that. My life is great, and I'm still able to get score validation with discord and whatnot. Hope you have a good day anon
