Only ever played the first NES game and SotN way back. Do you have any recommendations for how to tackle the rest of the series? Wanted to play pic related next.

play 2 if you must, 3 is amazing, super castlevania iv on the snes is incredible, dracula xx is terrible, the sega genesis one was just ok, castlevania chronicles is just a port of the x68000 game (it's amazing though) and of course SOTN is the all time classic. everything else not mentioned is garbage.

>> No.7759770

Play everything but Adventure and Haunted Castle.

No, really, that is my suggestion.

Play 1 again.
3 is even better.
Super 4 is arguably even better than that.
Bloodlines is very good.
Rondo is the very best one of all.
SotN is good.
Aria is good.
Ecclesia is very good.

Those are my top recommends. Honestly, it's hard to go wrong with any of them, though. Rven the very worst Castlevania games are pretty cool.

It's rightfully the black sheep of the series due to some shit game design choices like townspeople that are intended to lie to you just to obfuscate your goals. It isn't much like any other game in the series, modern or classic, and it pales in comparison to other similar action-adventures from the time period (think Zelda 2 or Faxanadu)

>> No.7759810

>>7759802
Yes, yes and yes. However, it is kind of neat. I'd say boot it up and try it out. It's got a pretty cool atmosphere, but it's kind of tedious to get through so you'll likely abandon it like most people do. It's worth fussing with, though. Might capture your interest for a bit.

>>7759810
At absolute worst, he can try it with a guide. I enjoy it with a guide, but I can't call it a good game. It's far too easy to scratch the itch that other classicvania games have for challenging stages and it has shit exploration unlike the igavanias.

I commend them for trying something new, but the formula just isn't that good, at least they way they tried it.

play rondo, play chronicles, then maybe come back here. 3 is potential kino ruined by falling blocks and 4 is a terribly slow snoozefest only enjoyed by nostalgic anglo boomers

Play the original X68K version instead, Chronicles is a butchered port

>> No.7761012

Played almost every Castlevania game, CVLOD is best, the ps2 ones are good, LOS1/MoF have great stories, as does 2 although the rushed ending and cut final boss ruin it, CV1 is cheap but fun, SQ is alright, SotN is great but also overhyped, Rondo of Blood/Dracula X have great music but have fun completing the bestiary if you're try hard exploration type, and Aria of Sorrow has creative demon soul combinations, IV is fun and a good entry point for classicvania and good aesthetic, for CV Adv play the wii version. Other games I've played are DoS, HoD, CotM, OoE, Judge, PoR, CV64, Bloodlines, Resurrection and IV.

>> No.7761019

if you liked Symphony of the Night, play Aria of Sorrow

if you liked the first NES game, play Rondo of Blood

if you wanted something thats more fun than frustrating, play Super Castlevania IV

He can easily play both. Let himself decide which one is better. If he likes the series, he wouldn't have any problem doing it.
As a Mega Man fan, I have played every single version, include the ones released for Mega Drive. It's nice to see those small difference, what port had the best version and so on. Also, being my favorite game, it always feel nice to play it.

Okay, but this is like saying he can play both the DOS version and the NES version of CV1 to see which is best.

Unless they want to try the Arrange Mode, there's nothing about Chronicles that puts it over the original X68K game.

Also the Family Disk Version and so on. What is the problem there?

>> No.7761160

the problem is that OP isn't asking for autism, he's just going to play one version once and move on to the game next, so if he wants to play CV1 he shouldn't play the DOS version

I came here just to bitch about this game. I'm playing it right now and who the fuck thought any of this was a good idea? This is the same year they made CV3, how was this put out? There is literally nothing redeeming about it, nothing. The idea of playing this on an actual Game Boy, something you couldn't see properly at the best of times, is beyond my imagination. I can only be so angry.

>4 levels
>no subweapons
>awful controls
>lose whip powerups on hit
>wacky collision detection
>pixel perfect jumps
>so many pixel perfect jumps
>entire 3rd level is being chased by instant death spikes that require perfect timing

Mind numbingly awful.

there is a colourized version part of the konami classics but it's only a bit better.

You also forget the most important things that make the game shit
>laggy as fuck
>everything flickers all the time, candles struggle so hard to remain into place I'm afraid they'll fall down

I don't know how this game got good reviews at release but it did

>> No.7761335

>>7761318
I'm playing it on the Castlevania Collection. I was going to mention the god awful technical fucking mess that the game is but wasn't entirely sure if the shit ports were to blame.

Also the game loves its "fuck you" moments where if you haven't picked up invincibility before the screen transition you just take damage and other unavoidable shit.

>> No.7761346

>>7759756
If you liked and beaten 1, I'd recommend a replay since it takes around half an hour or so to beat, then jump to CV3. CV3's Jap release is easier while USA is harder, your pick. Use Sypha in USA release for easier time and Grant in Jap release. Avoid the route that leads to Alucard's castle or you'll deal with multiple monotonous sections with water drops and falling blocks. Don't even bother taking Alucard, he's a bad time. Super Castlevania IV as a Classicvania fan is a disappointment, with lacking memorable tracks, boring artstyle and enemies, etc. I dropped it at stage 9 so I'm not sure if it gets better towards the end. Bloodlines and Rondo of Blood are a must play. Avoid CV2, it's mundane. If you still want to play it, get a retranslation or read a guide. Bizqwik's is pretty nice.

Sadly that you think that. IV is an amazing game, the only problem is that it's way too easy. Even on NG+.

If you had the music in 1-2 play throughout the entire game with less atmospheric tracks, removed the shitty enemies that existed just to die and the stupid enemy placement, the game would be much better. Throw in some more original tracks remixed, and it's even better. The other problem I have with the game is the dude who directed the art. It looks dull, nothing really pops out as much. CV2 had the same issue. Overall the game isn't terrible, just feels like a mediocre Castlevania ripoff.
