What are some good ones? I'm watching Variable Geo and it's shockingly decent. Really feel like these 3 eps should have been stretched to a proper 26 ep series because they plast through the plot really fast.

Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei is fun, but it's not strictly an adaptation from the game, rather from the original light novel. SMT Tokyo Revelation is great though. There's a nice little ova based on Wizardry, and an ova series based on Ys I and II (underwhelming imo)
I still have to watch the Tales of the Abyss anime, I guess it's decent.
There's a mediocre Ninja Gaiden ova too.
And Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken, if that counts

I have good memories of the Street Fighter II anime, but it could be the effect of the nostalgia glasses.

It's a shame that there aren't even comics of European games developed on the Amiga.
In particular Fightin' Spirit and Shadow Fighter could have been expanded.

About eroge...

Viper GTS OAV is the manifesto of everything that was the Sogna, too bad that the animations are not often fluid and the change in the succubi's character design.

Dragon Knight IV OAV is mediocre. Okay, good artwork and animation, but it's simply the plot of the videogame summed up in four episodes.

For the dvd, there is an English dub and it's okay. They have the habit of adding extra jokes that aren't there in the original.

I really like the Street Fighter 2 Movie. Not only was the game fire in its day, the movie trailers and awesome song composed by T.K. brought the hype. It was a fitting song for the final fight which was very satisfying for a dictator main, having faced countless horrid players picking top tier Ryu/Ken players, and still being better when they had so much options still have to resort to cheap tricks. The animated movie was so good, it inspired stages, characters, and character designs for the Zero/Alpha series.

Some of those were vanity projects by the studios, where they'd do an OVA series, and there could be as much as a year between episodes, maybe even more, as they put insane effort into the animation.

This looks extremely good, and is a wonderful expression of animation worth treasuring, but a pet peeve of mine is that a lot of clueless people today point at stuff like that as if it was the norm for anime in the 80s and 90s to look to have highly detailed and fluid animation, as if some cheap, or modest budget flavor of the month romantic comedy of 24 episodes was going to spend that much time and money.
(In fact, the one example I can think of regarding 'excessive' animation would be Nichijou, from a decade back, a slice of life comedy with a simple stylized look, but which Kyoani put incredible effort into adapting, very fluid, very consistent, no shortcuts or crude doodles anywhere).

I do lament that you don't see very much of that anymore though, where a studio just puts their absolute best effort into a long term project, just for the love of animation.

Yeah, if you're selling VHS tapes to a video store putting to put that crazy Japanimation into their sci fi section, it's just smarter to go for the stuff that's already aimed at a single VHS release market, rather than trying to get Every Single Episode of Ranma 1/2 out there or something. Got through the Ys anime recently, the Ys I OVA is excellent. A lot of the story of the game is expanded - we see 80s floof Adol help repel monster invasions in Minea, go exploring the abandoned mine with Dogi in tow, get his ass handed to him by bosses before he figures them out, and actually obtain and wear those armor upgrades. Goban is now a mysterious badass who comes out of nowhere to save Adol on multiple occasions, and Luta is now a more middleaged looking wisened guy who knows things. They all party up to take on Darm Tower and it feels right somehow.

The Ys II OVA was changed a bit too much for the worse. The Ys people don't even trust Adol's claims there's a world they're floating above, and hate him for a good half of it. Adol gains magic and it is his sole method of attack, he doesn't even pick up a sword til midway when he gets his armor, yeah it takes him that long to even get armor. From that point it actually becomes good, with a battle against a horribly mutated Dalles and then Darm using Adol's berserk nature against him. The character designs change a ton, Luta de-ages 20 years, and it doesn't feel like Ys II. Even Lilia doesn't get her staring curiously at Adol moment when he lands on Ys. Interesting for how drastically it changes stuff though.

i had started cataloguing every fighting game movie/OVA adaption i could find, let me know if there's anything missing. of course they're all mostly adequate at best - complete shit but still had fun checking them out

Fatal Fury Legend of the Hungry Wolf (1992)
Street Fighter (1993 - Korean comedy bootleg animation)
Future Cops (1993 - Hong Kong comedy spoof of Street Fighter though the story is its own thing while Street Fighter knockoff characters are just in it for whatever reason)
Fatal Fury 2 The New Battle (1993)

Fatal Fury The Motion Picture (1994)
Street Fighter 2 The Motion Picture (1994)
Samurai Shodown (1994)
Street Fighter The Movie (1994)
Street Fighter 2: Return to Fujiwara Capital (1995 - a 20 minute followup to Street Fighter 2 The Motion Picture, apparently it sucks and doesn't have any fighting in it)
Mortal Kombat The Journey Begins (1995 - straight to VHS prequel to the live action MK movie, hilariously abysmal animation)
Mortal Kombat (1995)
Battle Arena Toshinden (1996)
Last Bronx (1996)
Variable Geo (1996)
Book of Swords (1996 - this isn't an adaption of anything, but the main cast comprises of the actors who played the characters in the original Mortal Kombat games)
Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer (1997)
Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997)
Tekken The Motion Picture (1998)
Samurai Shodown 2: Asura Zanmaden (1999)

cont.
Street Fighter Alpha The Movie (1999)
The Avenging Fist (2001 - not an adaption, but a Hong Kong movie that was intended to be a live action Tekken movie. the rights were stripped away at some point in production and they tried to salvage it and make it its own thing but several remnants of Tekken still exist in it, one of the main characters is clearly just Hwoarang etc)
Street Fighter Alpha Generations (2004)
The King of Fighters Another Day (2005)
Dead or Alive (2006)
Street Fighter The Legend of Chun-Li (2009)
The King of Fighters (2010)
Tekken (2010)
Tekken Blood Vengeance (2011)
Tekken 2 Kazuya's Revenge (2014 - 90% convinced this was a completely different movie in production that they just slapped the Tekken name onto, basically no Tekken characters appear in it aside from Kazuya and Heihachi, Kazuya being played by a different actor from the previous one and Cary Tagawa reprising his role as Heihachi, but only in a flashback, and looking nothing like he did in the first movie, so presumably just random footage they had lying around or were able to call him in for 20 minutes to do the scene)
Warriors Angels (2018 - Chinese movie that heavily features KOF with KOF characters and primarily Mai Shiranui coming into the real world - they got in trouble and were possibly sued by SNK for this)
Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpions Revenge (2020)
Mortal Kombat (2021)

and that upcoming 2022 Chinese animated King of Fighters movie.
i was only cataloguing movies and shorter OVAs that amounted to about the length of a movie so i didn't include the Darkstalkers OVA which ran like 6 episodes.
then there's all the tv series/anime series etc
Street Fighter V anime
Street Fighter The Animated Series
Mortal Kombat Defenders of the Realm
Mortal Kombat Conquest
Virtua Fighter anime
Darkstalkers The Animated Series
King of Fighters Destiny
and probably more i forgot

Yeah, it got licensed years ago. The Complete DVD box set haunts rightstuf's clearance bin now and again.

Unrelated, Hudson's Adventure Island games got a TV series, a theatrical film, and even a Famicom game based on this spinoff. It doesn't star Higgins though, instead primarily focusing on the little fairy girl power.

There IS a storyline, just no story mode. The anime actually played out the story.

There was a couple of mangas as well. It's crazy how VF side material has all the personality, but they leave the game proper bare. The gameplay is absolute top notch, but the lack of story and personalities really held it back against the likes of Tekken and DOA.

I just watched the Variable Geo anime, and I have to say it was better than I thought it would be. I think it'd be better off as 12-26 episode series to flesh the plot out since they absolutely rushed through it. I was like "how are they gonna tie everything up in 30 minutes?" and they did, but it was like washing an abridged version of a series edited to 15 minutes. There was a suprising amount of melodrama and emotion for a series about big titty waitresses fighting each other.

Well that's sort of the issue with a lot of these fighting game adaptations. It never feels like there's enough time to get in all the characters stories, so while a few end up getting decent screen time, so many more end up just feeling like tacked on cameos. And this was back when fighting games had substantially smaller rosters too. I think VG1 had like 6 to 8.

>There was a suprising amount of melodrama and emotion for a series about big titty waitresses fighting each other.
Well I think that's part of what makes it all the more fun. If you just eye roll and laugh at how absurd it is and don't give it any real.. let's say gravitas then there's no reason to stay invested in anything. The tournament is an underworld kind of thing so the crowd is made up of unreputable types so depending on how much clothing damage is done the crowd's excitement is affected. Episodes were about an hour long, they legit do the story with Renegade/Kunio-Kun, then Soccer, Then Dodgeball, then Rivercity Random/Downtown, then it goes off the rails a bit.

The problem was while some of the characters were great, the acting was kinda eh, the budget was low and they could not afford music (even video game music)

I think all the narrative and aesthetic decisions they were making are downright horrible to what Lupin was (serialization instead of episode independence, "self reflexivity" and TV special tier sentimentalism, actualization through technology instead of fashion, consistent secondary characters, etc). Pink jacket is the peak of Lupin for me, also, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. At the very least, 4's animation was consistently OK and sometimes even fun to look at. 5, in comparison, is running on fumes and going overdrive on everything I considered a mistake about 4.

>>7783423
I agree with this. Most of the Pink Jacket's episodes are a riot and it's noticeable how much the animators were flexing their muscle in terms of motion and design. Also the only season in which I genuinely believe the characters like each other. Fujiko's so good in it!

So funny thing about the Wizardry OVA. It never got a western release. Which might not sound too odd but it was based on a western game (At the time) and Mr Woodhead was actually one of the founders of AnimeEigo, which was one of the older western distributors. So it's funny he didn't bring over the anime based on his own game. I don't know if he couldn't get the rights (somehow) or just didn't like it. But it's weird.

I hate how completely out of character everything became after S1. It matches up with S1's plot being written under IGA's supervision as the first of a trio of movies back in 2011. Carmilla was out of character, Grant never showed up (Greta doesn't count), Death showed up late AND out of character, Dracula got away scott free being with Lisa and learning nothing, no retribution for him killing the NPCs in season 1, Hector was ridiculously out of character and literally who gives a fuck about worthless NPCs and why did one of those NPCs raped Alucard in the asshole?

And why did they made Isaac a Pucci rip-off?

Putting aside that the actual art quality has diminished on average, what really is the "soul" of it is the high contrast paint job. Back then the color gradients were more dramatic. There were lots of dark and light tones right up against each other. Linework had to be hella dark and of a sufficient thickness. This wasn't really a choice, either. It was a matter of necessity. When your cartoon is a standard definition analog broadcast likely being viewed on a 13 inch CRT you had to make sure the details were actually visible. Razor thin lines and subtle color gradation are no problem in the HD era but back then it would reduce your show to a blurry mess.

I also think that the physical act of photographing the cels onto film attributed a certain visual warmth that's no longer found in animation. After all, when you photograph something you're introducing real world light into the image.

I don't believe the GIGA has the financial resources to try to bring this game back (especially after the failure of the 2002 remake [?]).
Although I am surprised that they did not even attempt to design a gacha.

I'm curious if these old games are popular among Japanese people, or if they are popular among Westerners since they were produced during the anime market boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s (Europe and Latin America) - mid-90's (USA).
Perhaps all of this enthusiasm is simply the result of nostalgia glasses and attachment to a specific vision of animation.
How many Japanese people remember Variable Geo or Sentai Shojo Lakers? It appears that the Sogna producer is more well-known (and remembered) in the United States than in Japan or the rest of the Asian market.

I don't think it's just nostalgia talking. The great thing about those early days is that they were a lot more experimental so there was a lot more freedom. So many of these games that were getting cartoons, comics, and movies in the 80s and early 90s had like two or three games under their belts at best and the IPs hadn't yet become pop culture institutions yet. It's kind of like reading Superman comics from the 1930s. The suits weren't yet demanding adherence to corporate mandates and the character roster was so tiny that adaptations had no choice but to tease out whatever they could imagine from the abstract presentation of the games. It's easy to come to the conclusion that the homogenized, micromanaged way a lot of these IPs are handled today is dull in comparison to the variety of material we used to get.

They have a website with the timeline much like Nintendo in their Japanese Castlevania website.
However, you did mention something, season 1's script was, after all, finished as a movie script in 2006 under direct supervision of IGA, it would explain why season 1 is the closest to the actual lore.

As for your questions, I got answers, from that timeline and IGA's own commentary:

>Sonia Belmont
Nope, she's no longer canon. Never was, actually; Alucard being present in her game directly contradicts Alucard's own backstory as well as CV3 as a whole (CV3 being the first time the vampire known as Dracula terrorized Europe after the death of his wife).

>The novel
Still canon to CV, however, the whole "John Morris was present" was bullshit added in the US English release of the manual only. For all we known, John Morris may very well be a bastard, considering his date of birth kinda lines up with when Quincy went to London to try marry Lucy Westenra.

John was apparently trained by the Belmont side of the family alongside Belnades (Belnades is a mis spelling of Fernandez, hence Sypha's spaniard accent, which lines up with meeting Eric in during his formative years in Spain). I imagine the Morris branch not wanting to do anything with this Dracula bullshit.

I don't remember where it came from but I like the interpretation of the games as actually all being the same game. Like ages ago in a place called Hyrule there was a Link, a Zelda, and a Ganon and they were involved in a battle over something called the Triforce but that's all that's consistent in what is effectively lost history. It was so long ago the details are fuzzy and each game is like a different storyteller putting their own spin on what is effectively oral history. I disagree with all the games being a retelling of a core story, for all the bullshit Historia was we do see sliiight nods to a sort of narrative (Ganondorf eventually becoming a pig, the pig trying to break free once more) but it was clearly added at the end. Zelda games are usually made game first, plot later. a lot of factors i would say; very thin, uniform, digital linework compared to the typically thicker, more voluminous and characteristic brushes and pens of traditional linework like in pic related. more pastel, creamy color choices are more in fashion these days when it comes to animation compared to the more bold color choices you would see in 90s stuff. how they've applied all this lighting around the edges of the characters in your pic gives it this plasticky glossy look - even applying it to like her t-shirt and shit is a bit questionable. i think the art itself and shading being a bit more simplistic across the board is probably the biggest factor at the end of the day, and i imagine that money and the standards of anime production as of late (think i read something about some big anime company announcing their plans to put a literal hundred different anime into production over the next few years?) but when you're thinking of good ass 90s anime art, you'd be more thinking of still close-up shots of the characters where artists would just flex and be detailing individual hairs, eyelashes, etc, and very precise shading that really gives the characters definition. then again, some action scenes and scenes with a lot of character movement in 90s stuff was still pretty simplistic and lacking in detail when you really look at the frames of course, its just the more still scenes that allowed for more of that crazy detail is what i think we typically associate with 90s anime.

semi-unrelated but if you haven't seen Puparia yet, check it out, very soulful, exceptionally detailed 3 minute animation from last year. primarily traditional animation with digital touch-ups. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWnqX41JHuM
shots like her hair blowing in the wind at 1:30 just immediately remind me of 90s stuff, its like the soul is tied to traditional medium in ways its hard to articulate

in case you dont remember, Dracula was ALWAYS fucked over in all known CV canon, even when doing the right thing, as per the original Bram Stoker books.

Specially in the Lords of shadow timeline where even the gods themselves betrayed him so he could kill satan. the fact that Soma Cruz is the only dracula reincarnation to have a happy life, is nothing more than a 'give the dog a bone' moment after literal millenia of suffering and forced resurections.

also, why would ANYONE care about the humans and villagers in the series? they had it coming. so yeah, it is nice that the gods arent such dicks as to leave Drac alone in hell, because he was indeed wronged by the world.

because he was let off easy and remain happy with Lisa. Dracula's entire motivation is being pissed off Lisa was murdered and he can't see her even in the afterlife.

By having Dracula get a happy ending with Lisa, it negates everything. No Adventure, no Belmont's Revenge, no Simon era, and so on and forth to even up negating Soma Cruz. Soma Cruz is the point where Dracula GETS to be happy, and to be with a reincarnation of Lisa (Mina Hakuba), Dracula gettinga happy ending in 1473 negates the entirety of the castlevania timeline.

Its obvious the first two seasons were written as a single one shot movie with no planned continuation and had to haphazardly be retrofitted for a series. The episodes even demonstrate this by not really ending so much as just stopping. Seasons 3 and 4 were them doing whatever the fuck they farted out because they had nothing in the tank. Season 3 just spun its wheels and had no forward progress at all. Every character ended in the same position they started. "Canon" was irrelevant. "How do we continue this now?" was the only question on the table. I'd have preferred them to have just skipped to Simon for season 3 but they instead chose to improvise.

Right, the Belmonts are pretty interchangeable as-is. In fact, in all media there's like one personality type shared by all vampire hunters. Captain N Simon meanwhile is Gaston from Beauty and the Beast (I know he predates him). Simon is physically competent but a guy who's vain, cowardly, and something of a germaphobe is actually a pretty fresh take on someone who just happens to be the one guy who has to go fight fucking Dracula. A guy who screams like a bitch while fighting monsters is actually a great concept.

But putting aside that it would be a riot, I don't think a series of Castlevania adaptations would benefit from telling the same basic story over and over again. Castlevania's fundamental underpinnings game to game don't have much more variety than the Mega Man series. Even bigger deviations like Simon's Quest and SOTN are fairly thin stories that don't bring a whole lot of freshness to the table in non-video game form. Taking liberties with the protagonists is one way to cast new light on the same basic premise.

Similar to John McClane. I think though that people vastly overvalue Roger Ebert's thoughts on videogames, because he was an old man who cared only about movies, which is quite a different medium.

>>7800604
Difference is that Lara was originally basically Batman tier, she's very strong and capable, an action hero who holds her own against many, she SHOULD have some good confidence, but fact is that she still wastes motherfuckers left and right in the new games, yet still sounds like she's never had to do any of this shit three games in. You'd think after a while she would get a lot more used to it and complain a lot less, she doesn't have to be a wisecrack, but after handily winning your 50th shootout, you wouldn't exclaim shit like "I can't do this!" because clearly you can.

Indiana Jones never tended to take on lots and lots of dudes at once, he'd run if the odds were suddenly against him, and surrender if he couldn't run, his fistfights are largely one on one, and not always against foes he could beat in a fair fight either. In that sense, I don't think Indy is particularly comparable to either classic Lara or new Lara.

I think the point was to get the series away from the children. It's not like it was Doraemon, there is a lot of stuff that is not... entirely wholesome. At least that was the vibe I got. We talked about the old days on /a/, he mentioned the meltdown over endless eight, and then stopped as if he didn't want to talk about it anymore. I have a feeling the guy is either going to end up with deep depression, or will kill his wife.

>Haruhi (because I wanted to fuck her so bad, I had to buy to support my Goddess)
>Black Lagoon (a very thoughtful Christmas present from a friend who is now dead)
>Serial Experiments Lain (let's all love Lain)
>Cromartie High School (Mechazawa is #1)

I was able to get all of these for $40 and under but I've seen close to 300 series at this point, were I to have bought or even rented all of those it still would have cost a fuckload of money. Thank God for nyaa (I had a mini-heart attack when that shit went down a while ago)

And maybe this is just blind nostalgia but I can't help but feel like BD just doesn't have the same OOMF to them as a physical media.
