Just finished Duke 3d's 2nd episode.
Other than the allahuakbar suicide bots that take way too many hits to kill often I liked the episode quite a lot. While I think the earth levels were comfier, the increased enemy variety is very much welcome. And the new guns to play around with are neat. Laser tripwires are kinda meh unless you up front an ambush is coming which is almost never but I guess you can use them to lure big enemies to you and whittle them down with it. Assuming you won't just shrink and splatter them. Glad they have the gatling gun lizards now, they can mix them up better with the weak aliens and pig cops, same for the fat commanders, I prefer that they use them occasionally and not just the octobrains that produce that ear rape sound effect. The boss was kinda gay but I liked that Duke literally ripped his head off and shat down his neck.

Started episode 3 and looks like it's back to comfy Earth urban maps. The little japanese bar / restaurant / strip club was nice and the strippers made me decide to look up some japanese 3d lewds.

So far been enjoying the game a lot, kinda feel like they could do more in-jokes, a bit more story like every few levels instead of only at the end of each episode but overall, solid shooter.

I think some engines handle it much worse than others. FTEQW makes the guns feel incredibly weightless. Same with Darkplaces. Quakespasm/vkQuake/QSS do it juuust right.

QS and its stablemates are set up so that the muzzle flash frames of viewmodels (as well as some other models like the flames and wall torches) are excluded from being interpolated even when everything else is. This has a two part effect of both making the models animate as intended- e.g. the muzzle blast appearing at each SNG barrel in turn instead of visibly sliding between positions- and making the effect feel slightly meatier when compared against the normal smoother animations, similar to the small delay/freeze on animation that a lot of fighting games have upon landing a hit.

The current vanilla limits func jam. The goal is to keep average r_speeds measurements of visible worldpolys at around 350 with an upper limit of 600, like most of the id1 maps, along with a bunch of other limitations that'll hamstring if you're used to modern aesthetics and no limitations. I unfortunately blew past that in a couple areas but will hopefully get it down to 'around 600' levels like E1M8 and a few other maps after some tweaking. Really fun to work around so far but boy is it a harsh limit when you actually start expanding stuff and makes me respect what id did with the vanilla maps even more.

Texturing is kinda brutalist, but layouts are very fun and dynamic, and feel novel all the time, probably due to irregular sizes and twists. To expand on this, people complain about GZDoom breaking mods all the time, but EDuke32 is on a whole other level. Practically every mod MUST be played with a specific version, because the devs constantly release versions with fundamental shit like clipping broken. Finally I can run a coop server for the original Unreal Engine game...
Sorta. It's a little buggy. Game speed is a little off (too fast, but almost more fun to move around that way), and trying to correct for it comes with it's own problems. Playable though. Works fine in single player, after applying some fan patching. Mostly a failed expiriment.

It is for clovr, but KHG released some months before and uses an older version of the engine, and also didn't get the same modern engine releases as Unreal Gold.
I never played the game like on release, so for all I know it was never perfect, bit I doubt it.
If I want to make another attempt I could always play around with virtualization. Probably not worth it though. Maybe I'll set up a deathmatch server and see how that runs first.
It was a long shot anyway. I bought the game mostly so I could throw it on archive.org, since there wasn't a copy there before, and the game is hard-ish to find a dl for.

While Hedon sprites aren't that good at least the level designs and visuals are put a lot effort into it,even if it makes Hexen pale in terms of backtracking.

In hardware renderers, I just set sprites to billboard. Having them constantly rotate to face the camera as a point rather than a plane is weird, walk over an item or corpse while looking straight down at it to see what I mean.

Was there an enemy in Quake that supposed to vomit/defecate on dead player, but didn't made it into the game?
