Shantae if she didn't suck, which is quite the downgrade if you catch my continental drift

Shantae in Monster World and Wonder Boy's Adventure Island are my dream crossovers.

Not OP but I just can't put my finger on what's wrong with the Shantae games. The setting and art style is right up my aisle, I love other games of this sort like the metroid castlevanias and monster world, but I've made it half to 3/4 through every Shantae game before finally admitting I'm not having fun and ditching them. But I can't seem to figure out why even though they seem to check the right boxes I always find them so boring.

because they aren't real games, they are just an excuse to show the half baked world Shantae is part of
that said, anon's pic is a nice crossover fangame with some questionable plot but great gameplay

He's right, the games aren't real games. they're just excuses to make a game. It's not fun and you can tell how every wayforward game is rushed and made by people that just do not fucking get it, college degree type "smarts" people

I guess I'm having a hard time pinpointing what makes them such non-games. Is it just that they're braindead easy? It's like it's doing similar things it's just not fun for some reason. Which is all the more annoying since it always looks great.

I think the best way is to play Donkey Kong for gameboy, then play GBC shanate. Shanate does not feel like she is interacting with anything. You don't have the feeling like you jumped, you attacked, you won, you lost. It's both hollow and none of the environments impress you, and the music tries way to hard instead of sitting in the background.

Pirate's Curse is good, but that is because you keep getting movement upgrades after movement upgrade.

The rest of the games are just meh. Standing still to input the transform dances doesn't really work as a mechanic, and a lot of the platforming is too basic. I have no idea why it works in OoT/MM/WW, but I assume it has something to do with the fact you very very rarely have to pull out the music instrument and then mash trough the inputs.
In Shantae you pull out the button and wait for the metronome, and have to change forms often.
If anything, the real problem is that since you change forms, each form has a shit moveset.

Shantae sucks sweaty neckbeard balls.

Half the game is boring re-threading of previous levels where a new powerup allows you to access some hidden puzzle to grab an item needed to access the final stage. Then the final stage is suddenly ten times more difficult then the rest of the game.

The elephant + mouse puzzle on the pyramid in I think HGH pissed me off so much. Although not as much as the fact that they nuked the entire game from the marketplace and replaced it with a new "complete" edition (at full price!), so if you wanted the last set of DLCs, you had to buy the entire game over again.

They are referencing and in the style of classic past games, but they're not very good. No one at Wayforward can figure out how to make an engaging dynamic games.

Take Pharoah Rebirth, which is obviously inspired by Shantae. The bunny attacks with his ears like Shantae, but also has a has a spinning ear attack when he jumps. It's the most obvious thing in the world, so why doesn't Shantae have it? He also has a ear-spin like the Belmonts in Castlevania games to destroy projectiles. Again, obvious.

Shantae games lack a sense of adventure, and interesting premises as well. I can't take the worlds seriously and they don't do much environmental storytellig.

Yeah I agree. They don't push the envelope or make you feel like you did something. That fucking trash game Another World even made you feel that. I have no idea how they're so disconnected. Are they mainland chinks? women? progressive fat white men with beards and glasses?

Shantae is a overrated game for ameriweebs with very truely cringy moments.
