retro gaming is for poorfags who cannot afford modern gaming rigs. been that way since the 90s if you think about it. poorfags always purchased last gen

Is that why zoomies only ever play retro games through emulators on their PCs?

>> No.7743236

Can 3-5 yr old stuff even be called retro?

Guilty as charged. I'm poor, and I'd be happy to purchase retro games if they at least made them available. as it stands, if I wanna enjoy Megaman 1-6, or Contra, or Earthworm Jim, or Chrono Trigger, I have to either emulate or settle for absolute garbage ports that have bugs and crashing issues.

I'm poor, but I'm also a complete cheapass. Though setting all that aside, I just prefer the gameplay of most retro games. Plus with modding and ROM hacks I'm spoiled for choice.

I wish this was the case, then prices would be cheaper.
A copy of a rare retro game goes for more than an RTX card(scalped).

I got all the modern stuff and a computer that can max any new title. Got into retro because the new modern games don't do it for me anymore. Only ever play multiplayer with my friends and modern single player titles just can't hold my interest. Maybe I'm just getting old. Either way, picked up a PS3 and put in an SSD along with CFW on it two months ago and have had a blast playing PS1 games I missed out on as a child. Thinking I might get me a Saturn once I've exhausted my PS1/2/3/PSP backlog.

This is pretty much me minus the having friends part. I still play new SP games sometimes but they're very few and far between nowadays and are usually from long running franchises (RE, Castlevania, etc.)

Isn't buying retro games really expensive these days?

It is, and it isn't. I get where you're coming from. When I was poor, I'd scour markets and second hand stores for "hidden gems" convincing myself I was some kind of collector, when I was just trying to get some kind of control in my life while I was stuck in poverty.
When I started to make good money in my career, I realised how small these amounts of money were for the rarer games I had, and practically sold off all of my collection when I knew I could just emulate everything.
I keep mini consoles for the novelty of having something physical, but yes, I have a gaming PC and just stick to whatever is fun to play.
I'm not a fan of AAA games in recent years, so I do still tend to dip back into retro games from time to time.
Collecting is a miserable experience in any hobby with seemingly no end to it.
I've sold to collectors who seemed like Gollum like characters and that was enough to put me off of it. I don't want video games to feel like an addiction or drug anymore.

I have a modern rig to make mods for retro games though. Also emulation.

on the one hand, yes, this is how it started for me at least. on the other though…
i used to kind of cope around 6th gen, i really wanted a console back then. then came 7th gen, i paid attention at first but then i started realizing that the era of Japanese reign in vidya was over. then came 8th gen, and you know what? i just didnt care. at all. i didnt get any sense of hype at all like i did before 7th gen.
what the fuck would i play today? some ubisoft garbage? CoD and the like? maybe another open world GTA clone? some overhyped garbage like Last of Us or Cyberpunk 2077?
I didn't have this question around PS2 era.things were simply different during 6th gen. 7th gen still had good games, but it was already being overshadowed by western AAA kusoge. the West ruins everything it touches, should have kept out of making games, only thing they can do is strategy and RPG.

I know this all too well. I wish wages would keep up with the cost of living. It is worse now with the pandemic, as the price of everything has increased significantly. I've been trying to get a low-tier card, 750ti (only low profile fits this budget machine), for a while now and they still go well over $100USD pre-tax+shipping. That card is well beyond last gen and they still go for 3 days of full time work, assuming there's no other costs like rent, food, or electricity.

>>7743378
It has gotten that way too. I've resorted to getting bootlegs from China lately, and even that has gotten way too pricey.

I play both. What gives?
