How the fuck was anyone supposed to beat this? By the time I got to this point as a kid, I was so beaten that I could barely make it pass Silver Sonic, and this thing kills you in one hit. They could've at least given you one ring so you have a fighting chance.

I used level select as a kid to learn the boss. Took me a bunch of tries but I learned you just gotta be patient, I don't buy people who say they beat this boss easy as a kid.
If you fuck up you have better hope you have enough lives or continues or you're back to the start of the game, and you have to fight Silver Sonic beforehand who even as an adult I sometimes make a small mistake and jump on the spikes on his back, let alone as a kid the first time when I don't know his pattern when he enters his spindash.

This isn't a final boss you're beating first try, anyone who says they did are lying fucks and it's such a pain to replay the entire game when you're a kid and you've still got shit reactions times and patience, Wing Fortress is the biggest hurdle imaginable.

>Sure, but 2nd or 3rd try you should get it.
Except anything you learned during your first go at it you've probably forgotten by the time you've managed to get through the entire game to fight the boss again.

Before Silver Sonic you have Wing Fortress with all its annoying death pits, glitchiness, and sadistic enemy placements that still get me 20 years later.
Then you fight Silver Sonic and, if you don't know the most optimal way to beat him, which you won't during your first or second go at him, you probably won't even make it to the actual final boss. Especially his spindash attack which, even now, if I end up not killing Silver Sonic during the patterns I actually know, he ends up getting me if I let him spindash like 4th or 5th time.
Then and ONLY then can you focus on practicing the final boss, who you'll probably accidentally touch the spikes on if you get impatient, and then it's a wrap and you're starting the entire game over. GG.

That final boss itself isn't hard if you didn't have to restart the entire game on a game over, so yeah, I agree there are way more difficult final bosses.
The final boss is difficult because you have to learn and practice it, but it's a 1 hit death each time, and you have to restart the game if you have no lives, and the preceding level probably took all your lives and Metropolis Zone probably wore down your god damn patience even before that.

You should always spend the early game in Sonic stacking up rings/extra guys.

Always do that, and in Sonic 2 especially, use the Casino Night to gamble, it gets boring fast, but just keep winning, keep your eye on the time, win at least 2-3 extra lives by gambling.

Silver Sonic and Robuttnik are just a matter of learning the pattern, SS is harder because he moves fast and can fluster you, a cool head is the key. Robuttnik however, is easy as shit as long as you have patience......just wait, and you can easily never be hit, the game makes it so you're literally always out of his reach as long as you wait till the lock on locks then spindash to the opposite end of the screen, he CANNOT hit you
