previous thread >>7689274

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

2 reasons
retards think pvms or trinitrons are the be all and end all of crts
retards usually post pictures of games running at 320x240 with scaling issues, or games stretched to a high resolution
if you set up custom modelines and scale the games properly it looks pretty respectable, you can always use ntsc/composite/svideo filters if you don't like the ultrasharp image too

For personal preferences, there are people that just dislike the BVM-like appearance that 240p on a PC CRT tends to have, but that's not really a fault with the monitor persay.

The actual negative is that to achieve that 240p, since the games you're likely playing are running at 60, requires frame doubling in order to reach the PCCRT's minimum horizontal sync frequency. This introduces ghosting issues and poorer apparent motion clarity because how how our eyes work.
The solution to that is mixing in BFI to get rid of/fill the area usually taken up by the duplicate frames, but that comes with the downside of cutting your light output in half.
Whether either of these actually bother you enough to sour the concept is the real question in whether it's "bad" or not.

The other option is to just throw 480p at it alongside shaders and filters of your choosing, giving you (literally) more room to tweak exactly how much light output you'd be losing (in the form of say, a variable scanline overlay) as well as the option of potentially softening the transitions between pixels to give a slightly less harsh and "clinical" image as you'd get from higher TVL pro monitors.

like >>7740803 said, actual 240p on a VGA monitor has to be at 120 Hz in order to reach a 31 KHz horizontal frequency, which is what VGA monitors are meant to handle.
because of this, 60 Hz content is frame doubled, which results in motion blur, which is probably the biggest reason people like the look of CRTs to begin with, because unlike "muh scanlines", motion is normally incredibly clear on any CRT
480p with a scanline overlay is more flexible and isn't a pain in the ass to set up like 240p is.

Stamping vinyl records is a bit different than manufacturing CRTs.

https://youtu.be/TVLVaoA-fic

Just look at how they were built. It was really only sustainable as a market of scale. It's not coming back and, frankly, it probably shouldn't.

Now what COULD happen, and I think this might be on the table, is someone builds a chassis, neckboard, and PCB that can drive any tube you drop in. The actual tubes are "dumb." So really any CRT, even a shitty RF only TV, could theoretically have it's tube salvaged and, with the right supporting electronics, become equivalent to a multisync monitor with every input you can think of.

True but as long as there are no actual defects like burn in or a dead gun you can actually get a lot out of any tube as long as you have access to a robust service menu. Sure, you'd be limited to consumer grade TVL counts for the most part but who really gives a shit when you're able to feed the thing anything you want? Take the tube out of a mid-90s RCA and drop it in to a chassis that turns it into whatever you want it to be. It'd be a little complicated since you'd need a custom deflection yoke but as a kit that suddenly turns any random junk TV into a great TV? It wouldn't literally increase the CRT supply but it would figuratively do it.

PC monitors usually don't support 15khz (240p, 480i) video. So you have to line double which ruins the look of the games, run at 120hz emulator which causes motion jitter, or run BFI or scanline filters, both which cause half brightness.
On top of that, the PC monitors are way too sharp for it to look good like >>7741290 posted. Large slots on televisions give a fuzzier look which blends the low-res image together. Also, the gaps between scan lines are super large since the beam is very focused on a PC monitor so more than half your screen will be black at any time.

If everything works and the caps look good/normal, don't mess with them. caps can last for a very long time. all caps in crts are quality caps that can last for 1000 or 5000 hours at 85 degrees. the life expectancy of capacitors, however, increases exponentially every 10 degrees (roughly) temperature difference. for example. a 85 degrees 1000 hour cap can live 2000 hours at 75 degrees, 4000 hours at 65 degrees, 16000 hours at 55 degrees, 32000 hours at 45 degrees and 64000 hours at 35 degrees.
This is the reason, why the vast majority of crts, eventhough they are 20 plus years old, still work fine today and why their caps usually look pretty good.

Sure, sometimes they fail before, but if they look good and the pictures displays correctly, they should be ok.

Still not CRT response, but as close as you can get with current large format panel TVs, as for movie image processing both the Sony and Panasonic OLED's are better yes (ABL is brutal on LG's!), but by much and certainly not worth sacrificing the 120hz capability and stellar low latency.

unlike vertical warping, horizontal warping is something that, unfortunately, can't be fixed in the service menü, because most tv's don't have a setting for that. I'm not sure if horizontal warping can be fixed by recapping. However, on your picture it looks like there is blank space on the left side of your screen? Go into the service menü and adjust the horizontal center and/or horizontal size of your screen. horizontal size should be a bit bigger than the tv frame (so a bit overscan).

Dude, that looks very good, man! Now look behind your tv and write down the exact model you have. search the interwebs for a thing called "service manual". if you are lucky, you can find one for your model. look for a thing called "service menue" in the service manual. it can usually be accessed with a button combination on the orginal tv remote. now you have access to geometry setting and the like, should there be a need for adjustment. judging from your pics, you picture look pretty good already. if you are a newbie: don't mess with any other settings in the service menue. just geometry, nothing else. and make sure to write all your geometry settings down (as a backup) in case you mess up something.

This set isn't able to change horizontal center or horizontal size through the service menu. The options are there, they just don't do anything when they're changed, and the service manual states that they cannot be changed. Does this mean maybe I need to adjust the yoke? I created a list of all the caps and I'm just going to change them out. From what I've seen online some of the waviness is most likely caused by failing caps. Since I'm already opening it up to do some other work on it, so I might as well do this while I'm at it. Also it'll hopefully help it last longer.

Note: This, as well as the schematic you posted below are only doing signal encoding, not scaling. That is to say, it's taking RGB in and outputting SVid and CVid, but the resolution being input is remaining the same.

I'm assuming you're wanting to use this with a PC; As such, you'll need to get your GPU to output at a proper low resolution for it to work. If this is for emulation and 240p as a result, this won't be too much of a bother as a whole, but if you're wanting/needing 480i, Nvidia is going to be (essentially) out of the question and might need a bit of toying around with regardless for AMD.

There is more to it than just the analog video signal, phosphor bloom and decay altering how the shadow/slot mask is perceived (or the effect of it rather) IRL and the fact that this happens physically outside the 60hz/50hz framerate meaning the shader it self would have to operate at a higher fps.

Realistically, to start to convincingly emulate CRTs we would need:
- 8k resolution (sub-pixel/mask behavior).
- @120hz (the physical effect CRTs have in real-time on your eyes).
- HDR (phosphor bloom intensity and dramatic contrast).

But you're right in that composite filters are the most realistic analog emulation we have this far and what we should be using, but that is video signal emulation and not CRT emulation where things start to drastically get more demanding to get away from that corny fake lines-drawn-across-the-screen effect we get with current CRT shaders.

For analog video you can transcode sampled RGB signals and convert them to digital signal which takes like microseconds. But since you also need to scale 480p to 1080p or whatever, you will need to buffer a full scanline for line doubling. Which is again microseconds. As long as the monitor isnt doing full framebuffer scaling shit on what you give it there won't be digital processing lag.

9PT20/40 and 9PT50/60 are using entirely different chassis. The former is analog chassis with physical adjustments inside the set, the latter is "digital" with a service menu.

I haven't messed with my PT50 in a good while, but I'm nearly positive it doesn't have horizontal width adjustment. The same IC is used on larger sets where the circuitry it would be adjusting is there, but in the PT50/60, it's inoperable.

Can confirm, I've opened it up again and there's definitely no other pots inside that control geometry. Some things I noticed while testing are that when the screen displays a brighter image, the horizontal sides spread out more, and when the screen gets dimmer they contract back in. You can see it pretty well in this image. The edges are pushed out where the white box is.

ok so I took the advice from a few threads ago and set up my old wii with homebrew and emulators outputting 240p. Looks great.
Only problem is that I want to use a PS3 or PS2 control via usb adapter because the gamecube controller is ass for SNES.
They work in retroarch, but all the snes9x cores don't run fullspeed like they do on the standalone snes9x for wii.
Same with mgba.
Any advice from wii users about controllers?
