Speaking of foreigners, you see this badass? He's a Canadian who's lived in Japan for most of his life. Speaks perfect Japanese. Anyways, this is a GCCX thread and this discussion belongs in /int/ or /pol/ so I'm going to stop taking this thread further off topic by ending with this: claiming that a whole race of people are racists is ignorant at best and could even be construed as a form of racism itself.

Incidentally Commander Breivik respects Japan more than any country in the world. He does so for their attitudes toward foreigners.

In the aftermath of Norway's worst violence since World War II, documents are beginning to emerge that show the online life that suspected killer Anders Breivik lived. One comment posted to the right-wing site Document.no shows Breivik had admiration for the "monoculturalism" of Japan.

In comments made on New Year's Eve 2009 by the suspect, in response to a claim that globalization and modernity cannot be reversed, Breivik looks to Japan and South Korea for his response.

"You may not have heard and Japan and South Korea? These are successful and modern regimes even if they rejected multiculturalism in the 70's. Are Japanese and South Koreans goblins?" the suspect asks.

On Sept. 1, 2010, Breivik expands on his views on Japan and South Korea, expressing his admiration for the two nations' refusal to accept refugees.

"The UN has for years been trying to push them to receive hundreds of thousands of refugees but the number has ended in a tiny fraction of the original claim," Breivik says.

"Multiculturalists will be very embarrassed if you mention Japan and South Korea as these nations proves quite obvious [sic] that mass immigration is only a result of specific Marxist doctrines and very rarely economically or culturally privileged. Japan/South Korea has a border and border guards. If one lacks the visa one is denied passage ... (Europe had known this scheme prior to 1950-1960).

"The interesting question is, why are not Japanese and South Koreans demonized as Nazis and fascists?"

It's unlikely Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be happy to see they have such a fan.

Conbro here. Got my Retro Game Master DVD set a couple days ago, can't wait to give it out. Problem is, I can't seem to find a good collection of old school games, so I need either visit a Goodwill or use a extensive PS1/PS2 library since all of my old games are in another state so I can actually run this Catch Copy game. Another good episode to watch near the beginning of your Kacho experience is the USA Special 2 hour episode. You really get a good feel for just how enjoyable this funny man is to watch from seeing him in a setting you're familiar with, taking on the role of a videogame Borat with grinning wit.

On arriving at an arcade in America for a personal appearance he makes a hilarious observation regarding the hilarious nature of videogamers that knows no borders.

He'll take on a true American-style challenge, feasting on American junk food instead of dried squid and seaweed and wrestling with Robocop's crap game status and controls.

Everything he does in this episode will "read" to an American viewer, and you will get a good idea of who the man is. In his role as the "boko", the stooge, he is neither the Curly nor the Moe but rather the Larry.

There's something about the Mario series that seems to rub Arino in a wrong way. Remember くぐれ!(go under!/duck!) in SMW? Or the fact that he spent the 99 lives in SMB3 without getting to Bowser?

He should practice those. Mario should be already muscle-memorized for everyone that had a NES/Famicom on ye olde golden era.

To be fair, being in Yoiko, GCCX, other programs and also being a father must not let him with a lot of free time to vidya, that it isn't watched by stern-looking Kan; still, he should replay SMB on any iteration existant to regain edge

Conbro here. So thanks to a last minute donation, I have a decent chunk of 21 games to use for my live catch copy. It's sort of hard to find ads for some of these games so I might resort to box blurbs if I have to, but I've at least gotten the ads down for 9 of them.

Anyone know a good site for old NES ads? Google can only take me so far.

Arcade games in the US had flyers, Famicom and Super Famicom games in Japan had flyers, as did arcade games...NES games? Flyers? Not so much.

Nintendo Power was the print marketing machine in America. You might want to locate each game's review/preview in Nintendo Power and pull the headlines from there.

You know the game segment where they read off a line from an advertisement of an old NES game and they have guess what it comes from? I'm running that game live at the con. The prize is the Retro Game Master DVD plus an extra DVD containing all of the segments they couldn't put on DVD. I need ads to put up on screen that explain where the line comes from.

Earlier today I was reading about Japanese school uniforms, and the article made a reference to an 80's J-Pop song called Serafuku Onugasanaide. I was listening to it and halfway through the song the lyrics go "MOTTAINAIKARA MOTTANAIKARA MOTTAINAIKARA!!!," and recognized it from the Waste of Color segment.

Another song I found by that band, Onyanko Club, is Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi, which I recognize from the Yuyu Quiz de Go Go episode.

Weird finding these while researching shit unrelated to GCCX.

Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi is also the theme song to Highschool Kimegumi, an anime that has also has an adventure game for the Sega Mark III/Master System. Possible Arino might play it one day? The staff, probably due to Kibe's influence, seems to be warming up to Sega games.

I'm also going to add Solomon's Key like this:

>ARINO ENJOYS DIFFICULT GAMES
Solomon's Key (#6)
Prince of Persia (#7 & #8)
F-Zero (#118 & #119)
Metal Storm (#124)
Battletoads (#132 & #133)

It's a good introductory episode, and the result gets spoiled at the start of Prince of Persia.

"The follow-up game to Donkey Kong Country, which the Kacho challenged 4 years ago. The first game took two days to beat, but the Kacho, full of confidence, says he'll clear this one by evening. What could be the unexpected reason for this!? The exciting traps continue one after the other, will the Kacho be able to achieve a speed clear?"

"TamaGe will visit a toy store in Shinjuku named Toyland. The Kacho takes a great deal of interest in the owner and the many retro toys. Additionally, for the first time in Tamage history, something about the corner's state of affairs will be revealed!"

Quoted from the GCCX book by SA's RandomStranger:

"The reason the production season was so short seems to be that Arino had a scheduling conflict. The break between seasons thirteen and fourteen was only three weeks and the show usually airs biweekly. Behind the scenes this amounts to about two months off since episode 106 was shot during episode 105, and that gap seems to have been the justification for calling it the end of the season."

>Bad news? I got another freelance job from the same company almost immediately (what? I’m awesome like that). I’m going to spend the 1 1/2 to 2 weeks translating a 9 episode Japanese drama. That’s not the bad news. That’s actually amazing news. The bad news is that this will likely delay Blaster Master even further. I will try to take more breaks during the drama and translate bits and pieces of GCCX. But doing that much translation work at once takes it out of me.

>I apologize. But I can tell you the wait will be worth it. The Blaster Master episode was incredibly fun to watch.

I'm more bothered by the "high horse" SA people talking shit about LC. ALL of the teams have made some pretty bad errors in their GCCX subs. Nobody is blameless. Speaking as someone who has no affiliation with the SA Team, but knows the LC translator, I can say that the LC guy is a terrible translator. He tried doing some tokusatsu translations and his work was so bad he was basically laughed out of the fandom. After that he started doing GCCX episodes and I doubt he's improved at all.

>I doubt he's improved at all.
If you have Japanese knowledge and a little time, it would be helpful if you could skim over LC's GCCX subs to give some examples of poor quality. He's only done a few episodes. If you truly don't have any SA bias, this would be a productive discussion to have. Unfortunately, most posts critical of LC usually just say DON'T TRUST HIM without much elaboration. Those posts often reek of the SA Team or its defenders.

Well, most of what I know about him comes from talking with translators who have seen his work so I can't give any examples off the top of my head. And I don't know enough Japanese to be a good judge (which probably throws my entire argument out the window, but at least I'm being honest). If I dig up some examples I'll be sure to post them. Basically I've been told that LC is despised by other translators, doesn't have a firm grasp on the language, and has tried to turn groups against each other.

Japanese version of III is much easier, so it shouldn't be that hard for him. It even comes with passwords.

Speaking of American vs. Japanese versions, I was confused by the Ghouls 'n Ghosts episode. I thought the Japanese version had checkpoints right before the bosses, but Arino had to go back to mid level after getting killed by the bosses. I remember playing the American version with the extra checkpoints and making it to Ohme with the sword equipped. You can't kill it with the sword, and the checkpoint just puts you right before the battle. I had to reset the game.

For some strange reason, the older Yu-gi-oh games had this "alignment" system, where a monster could instantly kill another monster regardless of power. It went like:

Fire > Forest > Wind > Earth > Thunder > Water > Fire

There was a second set of alignments, which have no advantage of disadvantage over the above. Likewise, they above don't have any advantages or disadvantages over these.

Shadow > Light > Fiend > Dreams > Shadow

Finally, there is the Divine type, which cannot be killed via alignment. Likewise, it cannot kill via alignment.

Also the cards were given some effects to reflect the anime, and others had effects removed. It's a -very- interesting take on the game.

There were three other games on the Game Boy/Color, and the GB itself is a retro console. Likewise, the first ever YuGiOh game (Breed and Battle) was on the PS1, around 1998, albeit it was that "board game" that was meant to push the series before the card game. The first card game game was on the Game Boy, also in 1998.

I've been meaning to ask, what is the third GCCX game going to be about, anyway? Something tells me that it will deviate from the simulation norm and focus on Arino's daily adventures, but portrayed as stereotypical modern games.
