No run button and being forced to use the same character throughout the game adds to the challenge
The warp in 5-3 isn't exclusive to Luigi/Mama in DDP, anyone can reach it by curving their super jump
Mama also doesn't jump as high as Luigi, her gimmick is just the slow jump
There's also a save feature and infinite continues
The best things Mario 2 added were Clawgrip and waterfalls not making your eyes bleed
Overall I just think DDP is a more challenging and unique experience

There was a weird stylistic consistency between the creatures in DDP/SMB2. It makes the shy guys feel really out of place in games like Yoshi's island.
I know Mario games don't have lore and Shigeru Miyamoto doesn't give a fuck about continuity, but I still wonder what was up with the shy guys in Yoshi's Island. Were they chosen just so that koopas wouldn't get too repetitive?

>> No.7726302

The way Goombas work in YI, they have a weird sort of delayed action to squishing them right? Maybe they didn't want that as the first enemies. Koopas, they probably didn't want players to spit shells instead of throwing eggs. So the next logical option for the basic enemy type is Shy-Guys I guess.

Actually, yeah, that makes perfect sense.
It's funny to remember back to being a kid, studying all the details and flavor text in the instruction manuals. I was mystified by shy guys in Yoshi's Island and wondered how they got there from the land of subcon, and why they went extinct by the time of Super Mario World. Not once did I ever consider that it was just Nintendo reutilizing old assets.

In the JP SMB3 manual, Bob-ombs had an added part of their description saying that the player might've seen them before (in another game). Clawgrip FELT like a boss idea left over from Doki Doki Panic (in fact I would not be surprised in the slightest if that was true). The devs came back and specifically wanted to add it to replace the third Mouser for a change of pace. It fits the game like a glove and makes DDP feel naked without it.
Robirdo is a gimmick battle that could only have been made in the GBA vacuum. "Whoa kids, lookit our scrolling 'n giant sprite prowess right at the palm of your hands, aren't we just so impressive?" It feels tacked-on and unlike anything else in the game, in a bad way.

>how did they feel so confident making shy guys main enemies in yoshi's island. especially since yoshi's island doesnt have all that many other references to DDP
Because by that point they weren't references to DDP as Super Mario USA was released in Japan a couple of years prior. Actually, I wouldn't even say that the SMB3 instruction book thing is necessarily a DDP reference--at least not internally, because some of the same people who worked on the DDP-SMB2 conversion also worked on SMB3 (this evidenced by the fact that SMB2 uses Mario and Princess sprite from SMB3).

Also, they would later use Ninji and Pidgit in Super Mario World, and that was *before* Super Mario USA. I can't imagine that Miyamoto and co. meant all of these DDP enemy occurrences strictly as references to a Famicom Disk System game that hardly anyone remembered. Within the walls of Nintendo of Japan they were all very much aware of the fact that 'Doki Doki Panic' was considered a true Mario game and was an international hit.

>Actually, I wouldn't even say that the SMB3 instruction book thing is necessarily a DDP reference
In terms of their target audience, it is - hell, the whole of Super Mario USA is considered a Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic reference, as Nintendo was not shy about it being a Mario flavor of the same game in that region.
>I can't imagine that Miyamoto and co. meant all of these DDP enemy occurrences strictly as references to a Famicom Disk System game that hardly anyone remembered.
Doki Doki Panic was one of the biggest titles on the Disk System. Yume Kojo wasn't some random smalltown festival, it had the force of one of the biggest broadcasters on it.
>Within the walls of Nintendo of Japan they were all very much aware of the fact that 'Doki Doki Panic' was considered a true Mario game and was an international hit.
In a sense, Doki Doki Panic was always a Mario game - Miyamoto and co were more involved in Doki Doki Panic than the original SMB2, and the game was prototyped with the intention of being Mario or Mario-like.

Those are fair points, but all I'm saying is... to say that the Ninji and Pidgits in that game are purely DDP references, I feel would not be giving R&D4/EAD enough credit. The first players to see those enemies in the game would have seen them as DDP references, but that fact on its own feels really strange and random given this was the premier title of a brand new console and Doki Doki Panic was 4 years old released on disk for a short-lived addon to their previous console. I just think it's more likely that internally they might have considered those to be Mario enemies since, again, a lot of them would have worked on or been around at the time the DDP to SMB2 conversion.

If you think the shared enemies is wacky the you have to realize that Nintendo, especially in older days, liked to throw in shared elements and cameos in many games. Remember when the Fire from Donkey Kong and Medaman the fried-eggman from Devil World were going to be in The Legend of Zelda? Even the final game has some lingering Nintendo game references like the Bible being from Devil World, Manhandla being a giant Piranha Plant from SMB, Digdogger being a giant Unira from Cluclu Land and the Rupees obviously being the Ingots from the same game.

Hold the phone. Does this mean the Mario franchise takes place in the downfall timeline? But wait, I think that's Zelda II Link in DKC2, not LA Link. I knew Cranky was old but Mario aged pretty gracefully. But wait, one of the bears in DKC3 mentioned that Link was collecting seashells but muttered about his being the wrong shape, so it must be LA Link. Is that post-LA or is DKC3 also a dream? How can DKC3 be a dream if Wrinkly said she died after DCK3? Or is entire DK series a dream? Wait, the real SMB2 is suggested place in a "parallel world" to SMB1, and SMG2's story plays like a "parallel" version of SMG1. So does that mean Mario is also a split timeline? One timeline is Doki Doki Panic, the other is SMB2USA? Is Super Mario Advance part of the third timeline? If Paper Mario is its own universe, does that make every game in its own art style like Yoshi's Island its own universe too? Is this why Mario and Wario have owned castles at different points? Where do the cartoons and comics fit in?
