I respect the craftsmanship that went into designing these shells but I don't get why you'd want GB form factor on a newer handheld, especially when it's on the smaller side and cramps up your hands further.

I think you answered your own question, it's for the craftsmanship. He made it for the sake of it, not necessarily since it was actually more comfortable to play games on the device itself. You could see it as a "proof of concept," or proof of his own abilities for that matter. He clearly got enjoyment out of the process of making it.
