I thought this. It was deeply unusual to put players in a giant empty area at the time, it didn't become common until the next generations, zoomer. Zelda games prior to this had occasional, single overworld screens that lacked content - very rarely - but nothing as long and pointlessly devoid of variation as this.

Which other "bland and empty" games on the N64 do you think were around at OoT's release? 5th gen 3D spaces were mostly smaller and denser because they were trying to work with system limitations and to not have to stretch small textures across giant spaces. Collectathons were in full swing, with both Spyro and B&K releasing prior to it, which meant even the bigger, more open environments were still always filled with stuff. No, really, at the time I thought the field was a letdown.
The previews I've seen before then implied there was more stuff in a "main" area such as some smaller forests & villages.
So seems they seperated that stuff, likely for performance reasons.
This is a small issue to talk about, but even small issues should be addressed to help avoid repeats.
Like Zelda 1, it was one of the top examples of an adventure game, but it had flaws like lackluster graphics and unclear goals. And so Z3/Lttp addressed that.

This game is the ultimate pseud filter. Hyrule Field is a perfect example of something that gets criticized purely because the average person is too stupid to understand it. Hyrule Field is not a dungeon. It's not supposed to be filled with enemies and obstacles. It's a hub. It serves as a way to connect all of the various regions together, and allows for a degree of welcome downtime and breathing room between story segments. It gives you a chance to ride around and figure out your next move, stock up on items, search for the occasional secret area or simply enjoy the view and relax for a bit. I really don't understand how people even call it "empty" when it plays host to 10 secret holes, fairy locations, the poes, the running man, and a few other things. There is literally nothing wrong with Hyrule Field and the game would be worse if it were filled with trash enemies and more unnecessary garbage.

You get it. Hyrule Field is interesting because:

a) It's large enough that it's not trivial to exhaustively search it, so secrets can hidden well through its sheer breath and sparsity, unlike most other areas in the game
b) Despite this, it's not so huge that it's unreasonable to explore all of it. so things can be hidden 'randomly' with the expectation that the player could find everything eventually
c) Traveling through it any more than necessary is completely optional. You don't even need to see a horse even once through the game to finish it, but that's still there to discover for yourself

The word is "commute", anon. I already have a tedious job in real life. I don't need a fictional tedious job to provide me with rest in between sessions of relaxedly having fun. Watching a horse's butt bob around during what might as well be a cutscene every time I want to get to some other part of the game world is not relaxing to me. Playing a good game is relaxing. This buttwatching minigame in Zelda 64 is not a good game, any more than Desert Bus is a good game. It's a simulation of a bland commute.
