No, but they would make all the running around you do much, much easier.

You can avoid enemies in CC by running around them and doing it with the dpad only will make that harder, as well as making basic navigation more frustrating.

What's confusing about the combat?
There are 3 magic spaces; each magic makes one space become that colour. When all 3 are of the same colour, you can make a strong magic of that element. That's pretty much it.

It's extremely well optimized, excellent game compatibility, has a vastly superior UI compared to RetroArch (pointlessly slow awkward cumbersome garbage) and Mednafen (command line for emulating video games are you fucking serious) and is incredibly simple, quick and easy to set up. This makes other emu devs seethe like no other. I started using it purely because it was causing these autists so much butthurt and was pleasantly surprised at how great it was. There's no point to using any other emulator for PS1 now that this exists, other emu devs are just going to have to grow up and deal with it.

From what i recall.
Basically there are 3 types of physical attacks each with a higher damage lower change to hit. You score hit levels like 1 2 3 etc to unlock levels of magic so if you hit with a 1 you can then cast a 1st level spell to cast a level 3 you have to score a combo of 3 levels of hits so 3 /1s a 2 and 1 or a 3 there are also higher levels than just 3 so you might have to score many hits to unlock very particular magic abilities in combat.
