That opinion drives me nuts, but I have to admit that it holds some merit when we're talking about second gen. I was born in 1993, love the fuck out of my NES and my SNES, but there are only a handful of Atari games that can hold my attention. Even the Atari greats like Pitfall 1 and Yars' Revenge are just straight up TOO minimal for me.

There are some exceptions: Warlords, Pitfall II, and a couple of homebrews, but other than that the Atari just doesn't do it for me, even though the NES does. I didn't grow up with either, though.

>There's a reason why the market crashed, and that reason is the second gen consoles.
Oh yeah I can use idiot logic too.
There's a reason why the market got huge, and that reason is the second gen consoles.

The reason why console market crashed was because of employee mistreatment, system adapters, oversaturation of games which few could afford to buy a significant amount of in a time frame needed to recoup losses before technology overshadowed them, poor business decisions. There's a slew of shit that went wrong not just one thing and it definitely wasn't the very same thing that even made the industry in the first place.

First gen consoles were dick and you can only have so many different manufacturers of the same fucking pong game before no one gives a shit.
Seriously, it was maganavox pong, atari pong, telstar pong, nintendo pong, telsstar pong with woodgrain, telstar pong with detached paddles, telstar pong with color, magnavox with people instead of paddles, maganox pong against a wall for two players.
Shit was awful up until second gen. Sure it was heaven if you liked dishing out cash for every minor version of a pong machine in history.

Nolan Bushnell sold Atari off to Warner Communications in 1978. They tried marketing video games like movies and TV, an idea that would make sense today, but was too far ahead of its time. It could not work at that early stage.

After the Warner sale, Ray Kassar became CEO of Atari after 25 years at Burlington Industries (a North Carolina-based textile producer unaffiliated with Burlington Coat Factory). He was a typical businessman who didn't give a shit about video games and concerned himself only with how much money he could make from Atari's stocks. Kassar freely spent company money on personal things such as a private chauffeur and a chef who came into the office every day to cook his lunch. After the crash began to unfold, Kassar was ejected by the Board of Directors in September 1983 and subsequently investigated by the SEC for embezzlement (the charges were later dropped).

In 1979, a group of Atari programmers began demanding that they be credited for their work and also receive royalties like any TV or movie writer. Kassar flat-out told them "You don't deserve anything. You're merely the equivalent of the the guy who assembles products on a factory line." Thus the disgruntled programmers left to found Activision, the first-ever third party console developer. While Atari tried to sue them, they lost and the way was open for anyone to produce games on the Atari 2600.

He was a typical businessman who didn't care in the least about video games and concerned himself mostly with how much money he could make from Atari's stocks.

Kassar flat-out told them "You don't deserve squat. You're merely the equivalent of the guy who assembles products on a factory line." Thus the disgruntled programmers left to found Activision, the first-ever third party console developer. >> No.776892

In addition to market oversaturation, it was obvious that video games weren't progressing design or technology-wise. Developers continued to churn out second-rate clones of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Galaxian. Many games were produced by fly-by-night outfits attempting to cash in on the video game craze and the results typically ranged from mediocre to terrible. There were overall far too many games, consoles, clones of consoles, and peripherals available, and not for cheap prices either, a typical Atari 2600 cartridge retailing for $40-$50. Arcades started acquiring a negative reputation as dirty places where teenagers sold drugs.

Finally it all came crashing down. By the middle of 1983, people suddenly stopped buying video games. The result was chaotic; Atari stocks went from blue-chip status to junk bond overnight. Dozens of game developers shut down or dropped out of the business, and retailers began selling formerly $40 games for less than $10 just to get rid of them.

Also, the infamous saga of adult video games: A developer named Mystique began producing pornographic titles for the Atari 2600 such as Beat Em And Eat Em and X-Man. However, the gold-plated straw that broke the camel's back was their release of Custer's Revenge which provoked lawsuits from Atari, Indian, and women's organizations all at once.

By comparison, Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi would openly oppose adult games on the Famicom, not wanting to soil the company's image (although a number of unlicensed ones existed).

There's some rare and valuable stuff. 2nd generation /= VCS although there are some valuable VCS games in the world. I've generally found they're not even worth sifting through the crates of worthless VCS games that are at every thrift store though,

No. I was around back then and I'll admit that NES easily > Atari 2600

No but it was the most dominant platform of that era

I watched a race before playing so I had a couple of ideas, like star man or stone man to start and how to continue from each one.
Still the bosses were easier even than that Street Fighter crossover.

Also, I was on roids the whole time.

Make a friend of the coyote
He will always tell it like it is
Take council the bear
Back on the Res

When we would sail the phoenix
Feather on the sea
Thunderbird at midnight
Per chance did meet

Swallow took the sun
From that bitter ground
And now we were heavy
With the burden of a crown

We are the King of Arizona
We are the King of Arizona

Townies are a helpless people
They are busy in their troubled games
Damn their parliament of needles
They know not a lineage of names

We are the King of Arizona
We are the King of Arizona

The Atari VCS is like the Model T Ford. It introduced gaming to the masses and blah blah blah the history and all that, but it was quite embarrassingly crude and you'd hate to play/drive in one.

Sony has curbed most of the demand by putting it on their network, and allowing it to be shared across an account.
It's not that there's less a demand now, but people will rather buy the $10 download, play the game through there, and won't be prone to impulses buying a game just because they finally found it. They'll wait until they can find it cheap enough.

Nintendo is going to go much the same way, only diehards looking to collect are going to drive prices up.

The games are dick easy if you know those two things you mentioned. Wily stage can be another story but if I remember right 5's is pretty weak.
