So I have this cool setup with a good CTR TV and all my consoles from NES up to PS2~GCN hooked in there.
I recently installed the latest RetroArch on my GCN on a SD card. It works flawlessly.
I just made a comparision of NES Mega Man games running on actual hardware in one channel and running on my GCN on another, and it looked amazing, almost identical to the original. Better than any filter.

I was thinking of getting a NES flashcart soon, but this changed my mind. I have a PS2 gamepad adapter for GCN, so I have my favorite joystick in there too.

I'm making this thread because I keep seeing here people trying to hook up a laptop to a CTR TV. Well, if you have a modded GCN or a Wii, you don't have to. Just buy this $3.40 SD card reader http://dx.com/p/wiikey-sd-card-adapter-for-wii-3993 and you're good to go.

RetroArch is amazing. That is all.

SMB support is in a lot of Wii emulators, lets you connect to a windows network share instead of putting ROMs on the SDcard/disc. It's a handy feature and probably the main one Retroarch for Wii/GC lacks.

You're setting the resolution to the appropriate native res for the consoles you're emulating, right? That's key for not getting a blurry interlaced mess.

>> No.769495

>>769467
I've actually never tried RetroArch on my Wii. I use it on my PC extensively, though, always at 4x native resolution.

>> No.769567

>>769495
It's great, especially through component. Supports every retro resolution you can imagine and has the best NES emulation of any I've tried for Wii, perfectly smooth compared to the janky/discolored mess that is FCEUGX.

Mednafen is better for PCE/TG-16 emulation though, for some reason the core in retroarch isn't as smooth.

I like fake display filters (NTSC, scanlines, fake LCD, etc).
I prefer aspect ratio to be corrected (ie on the NES and SNES).
I prefer at least some scanlines to straight-up nearest neighbor filtering, but I get why people like that.

I have no idea why people play with HQ#X filters and such and turn games into Jackson Pollock's vomit.

You can make a case for the artists intending their art to be displayed on a TV or handheld display, on the RGB workstation monitors they drew on, or even that they really intended the game to be seen on a perfect LCD monitor.

None of them had any idea that idiots 10 years in the future would be tossing their art into the HQ#X blender. They did not at all take that into account. So, if you play with 2xSai, not only are you making the art look like shit, you're doing so in a way that the artists never could have possibly intended for you to. It'd be like taking a photograph of the Mona Lisa, making the whole thing brown, and adding a few lens flares. Then, when someone tells you you're an idiot for doing that, you say "I didn't want to look at this gay ass painting anyway, I wanted to watch The Avengers."

I like it here when we're talking about games. When it comes to filters, this place is a crt/nearest neighbor circlejerk.

How did you come to that conclusion? If I hated retro games, I wouldn't play them and I wouldn't be here. That doesn't mean I'm not going to try to make them look better with filters and shaders.

4chan is fine when it isn't a circlejerk and you don't get dogpiled.

Using filters to recreate the authentic retro experience, like the developers intended: good.

Using shitty, smoothing, shit-smearing filters to "enhance" the graphics: bad.

Any other questions?

That's your opinion but not a fact. The "authentic retro experience" is overrated and is mostly based in nostalgia. I grew up with these games, the "authentic retro experience" wasn't anything special like it's made out to be here.

No it isn't and you know it.
In pixel art every pixel has a purpose. A smile can be implied with a single carefully placed dot, Costumes are crafted with each pixel in mind. Smudging all that together destroys the image. "BUT IT'S SMOOTHER!" So what, it's a smooth SHITTY image.

People who like the way that shit looks are the kind of person who only watch full screen movies because they think the black bars cover parts of the picture in widescreen.

That's where you're wrong. It isn't smudging anything together, just smoothing things out, and some other post processing.

I'll spoon-feed you, becuase this whole thing gave me a lot of headaches, and I want to save someone the trouble. The first few guides you'll find googling around will mislead you into thinking you either need an Action Replay disc to boot and run stuff from the SD card, a tedious patching proccess, etc... Actually, the process can be much simpler.

The thing is, most of these guides are obsolete now that the apps continued to be developed for the Wii, and adding GCN compatibility somehow ended up working just as well.

So here's all you need to buy

- Get the Wiikey from dealxtreme (see OP)
- Get a SD card (contrary to the "only old non SDHC cards work" stuff pointed out in various guides, thanks to new versions of homebrews you can use almost any SD card, I use a 32 GB Sandisk)
- A XenoGC chip, or any modchip, in case your GCN isn't modded yet.
- Optional: PS2 gamepad adaptor easily found on ebay

Here's the files you need:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/osj34jlfvcfgmyv/gamecube.rar

(Included:
- Bootable "swiss" disc
source: https://code.google.com/p/swiss-gc/downloads/list
(I'm providing mine instead of you giving you the source because I made it into a bootable disc myself. There's an iso provided in the official developers website, but it didn't work for me)
- Latest retroarch for gamecube
source: http://forum.themaister.net/viewtopic.php?id=347

And here's what you need to do.
- Burn a bootable disc with "swiss", which is a homebrew that let's you run both homebrew apps (.dol format), and GCN games (.iso or .gcn format), so if you have a big SD card, this is pretty much the only disc you'll need from now on (doesn't work with the Gameboy Player Start-up disc though).
- Put the retroarch folder in the SD card with some roms (check the website for emulators and formats supported), and to the GCN through the Wiikey.
- Every retroarch core has its own .dol. Run the emulator you need for the system you want to play and that's about it.
