I think ESP.ra.de is best, mainly based on aesthetics and the base mechanics, but I realize its not perfect. I also am a fellow cave enjoyer so I would rank the games as fallowed.

It's like a twin stick shooter, but you only have one stick and both movement and shooting are mapped to it. Seems to get a lot more manageable once you have spread and can shoot at stuff without being in its line of fire.

Shmups draw me in when they have cool weapons and soundtracks and a nice overall feel. In R-Type Leo's case it's the green homing lasers and the blue reflecting shot, plus the first stage music is pretty cool. Same story with Truxton 2's first stage music and the blue autotargeting lasers or with X Multiply's first stage music and the damage immune tentacles your ship can grow.

It's an awesome shooter that is highly regarded our community. But not really a traditional "R-type" if you are looking for slow, calculated puzzle like levels. For that I'd suggest Pulstar or Delta.

As Metal Slug co-designer Kazuma Kujo said: "[Leo] is quite innovative for an R-Type game, and it was well done for a shooter, but it doesn’t quite feel like an R-Type game."

Touhou was my introduction to shmups, it has iconic characters that get tons of porn, tons of lore that keeps you wanting to get to the endings, hype music, etc.
By getting into Touhou you feel like you're getting into something big, you feel like you're being rewarded, it's not just about the challenging gameplay but an array of other benefits.
After playing a dozen of other shmups, Touhou is still my favorite franchise of the genre, some other games can have technically better systems, but they never made me want to get really good, they never left me craving for more.

IMO the best in the series is Psyvariar Revision. Best levels and lots of branching paths to give the game variety and depth. Psyvariar 2 is good but the lack of paths and some really short levels make it feel rushed by comparison.

Right now I'm trying to 1-life complete Gradius[PC-Engine version](it will also be the first time I finish the game). I was suffering against those moai heads yesterday, but now I'm able to get to stage 4(I assume every time you defeat that big ship, you pass a stage). This game is really unforgiving, depending on where you die, that is pretty much game over since you don't have any option anymore. Because of that, I decide to go for 1 life complete at once since dying once is the same as game over, imo.
I'm loving this game, btw. I play it between some games or between study session. I'm not using save state to train some areas, as some people seems to do, because I'm used to play games on arcade and there is no save state there, training in some area means getting to that area again(which also makes me get even better in the earlier areas).

Great graphics but unfortunately I'm not really a fan of Parodius because of Gradius syndrome. I'm more a fan of Irem, Toaplan, Compile, Cave and Zun. Its just the option system in Gradius style games is a bit too unforgiving. Sure the same is true of R-Type, and Abadox which I do like but it takes far less to power up so death is far less punishing.

IDK, I've never even enjoyed the original Gradius let alone any of the other games in the series. I felt the same way about the first two Darius games, but G-Darius and Darius Gaiden are kino so I like them way more then Gradius. In fact I always sorta felt Gradius games are one of the reasons shmups never became more popular because when most people think of the genre they think of games like Gradius. R-type games are not nearly as brutal. In fact I'd rather play Galaga before playing Gradius. IMHO

Galaga 88 is actually pretty great. Addictive, almost to the point of annoyance. Presentation holds up surprisingly well, too. And the alternate routes make it very replayable. I get done with the game, and I immediately start itching for more. Was never crazy about the early Galagas but this one is doing it for me.

The Life Force version is supposed to be more forgiving since you can at least recapture options (but not other power ups) after dying, but I've never once managed to do it. Seems like something that's more there for player 2 to take advantage of.

I'm moderately new at shmups but I like the balance DonPachi has. It's like this inbetween that's neither bullet hell or traditional shmup. It's not too overwhelming but still gets challenging and exciting and hectic enough to be enjoyable. I don't know of too many other games with that tradshmup/bullethell balance, maybe Battle Garrega but the scaling difficulty makes that one more overwhelming. Sorcer Striker might be a good example of something similar, that has a balance of bullet density sort of like DonPachi's.

Maybe being a bit new to the genre is part of it, I like a small dash of ego food to warm up before the game starts kicking my ass.

Plus I just really like the aesthetics. Visual design and sound design are really charming, and the narrator is great. The style and everything just screams 'classic arcade action' in a certain nostalgic way, but there's enough going on that it feels fresh and detailed. In this surface level 'flavor' regard I like it more than any other shmup I've tried so far, and as shallow as it might sound that really does go a very, very long way.

Just a feelgood game I can slide into whenever. I always have a good time with it.

no way, shmups don't need elaborate scoring to have fun scoring. More important is do you enjoy the stages, the ships and playing the game itself.

Look at speedrunners they speedrun games that weren't even designed for it, and the concept is simple just ''do it faster'' yet it adds infinite replay value and tons of optimizations. You can sore Konami, Psikyo even old simple shmups just fine and the difficulty will increase a ton

The only thing I upgrade first is speed, the rest I do whatever I want. I have done many 1 life complete and also prefer to die in hard parts and then try to recover(it's the best thing in the game since it requires skill, memorization only works when you ship is upgraded to the max) from that situation. You don't even need to upgrade speed(have done that many times), but will have to accept how slow the ship is.
