A lot of people are buying gba and modding gba and watching YouTubers do the same. Its not to play games, it's for nostalgia. And they usually have nostalgia for a pokemon game. So there is demand, and because these people are literally only buying one or two games to complete their nostalgia, they don't mind paying a lot.

Japanese people are retarded and refuse to emulate, so they need to actually buy games to play them, therefore no one has any reason to hoard or be jewish with prices. People only buy things to collect in US so of course the value is going to actually fluctuate

The retro gaming market is bigger here in Japan than anywhere else I'd wager. Any vidya store you walk in to will have several shelves full of retro games. I think the real reason is that the supply for retro titles is huge.

RS are great games but compared to GS anything will feel soulless. You will hate the lack of day/night cycle, the GBA sound, and the standardized sprites. The GBA Pokemon games are still my favorites despite their flaws because they perfected the gameplay. RS overhauled the whole stat system that would become mostly standard for the rest of the series. RS was basically the overhaul the series needed to overcome the archaic mechanics the series started with. Unfortunately the flaws I mentioned are due to the GBA. The GBA sound is a downgrade and the night cycle was abandoned because it would look bad on the GBA screen. The final flaw I mentioned is the standardized sprites. Before RS there was reference material but no real obligation to pose Pokemon in a specific manner. With RS came the demand that all Pokemon look exactly like the reference with none of the flexibility that allowed for the amazing sprites of before. The standardization that makes the sprites worse do wonders for the gameplay. For competitive it sucks that getting the best Pokemon is a time sink. For single player however, abilities and natures make each species feel different and unique from each other. The only thing that keeps me from playing RBY or GSC more than once is the Pokemon storage. RS doesn't get any credit for totally fixing the ancient storage of the previous games. Mechanically, RS is so polished I find it impossible not to dive into it deeper than any other game in the series.

TLDR: /vp/fag here, play Emerald, it will entertain you but anything is soulless compared to GS

Feels good man. I should learn to change the timer batteries though, and get a working gba + link cable to get the full gen 3 experience where I can connect them to each other and the gamecube games.
I always wanted to do a full "100%" of emerald legit where I use all of the games to fill the whole pokedex fair and swuare, but never got around to it, and the notion of essentially playing the same games 2/3x sorta scared me off of it.

Just wait for covid to die and things should go back down. Not all the way back to where they were pre-pandemic, but down nonetheless. Almost all desirable games made before like 2008 have nearly doubled in the last year, look at the sold listing prices for Chrono Trigger right now, it's not even that rare of a game. Considering I got it for $70 a few years ago from a store, where you're obviously going to pay more, the current state of retro game collecting is insane.
